Color Correctors – splurge or steal?

Color Correctors - splurge or steal?

Color Correctors – splurge or steal?

Lately it seems that all we hear about are makeup trends. We spent months obsessing over contouring, we moved on to strobing, we’re stuck on highlighters and illuminators, and now we’ve got color correctors coming at us like gang busters. Color Correcting isn’t new but it’s having its day right now.

I remember years and years ago that Physician’s Formula had little tubes of color correctors that were very inexpensive. It made the brand more noticeable because no one else had anything like it. I remember finally caving when it was on sale for about $2 – and being disappointed. I wasn’t as experienced with cosmetics and I didn’t understand enough about blending.

Move forward to 2016 and Sephora has been tempting me with Color Correctors as have other brands. Here are some I’ve bought at different price points.

WET n WILD COVERALL CORRECTING PALETTE ($3.99) A steal!

Wet n Wild Coverall Correcting Palette

Wet n Wild Coverall Correcting Palette

I picked this up at Walgreen mainly because I knew that Makeup Wars was writing about this subject plus I wanted to see how an inexpensive color corrector would compare to the more expensive ones. This is the one to purchase if you are curious and don’t want to splurge. But it’s not the best out there unless you want the purple (to counter dullness) and green (to correct red).

Wet n Wild Coverall Correcting Palette

Wet n Wild Coverall Correcting Palette

The yellow is called Cover but it doesn’t cover anything on me; it’s meant to cancel out bruises or undereye circles. The white is their Highlighter but it’s pretty weak. Purple is what they call Normalize while they name the green Neutralize. The texture is very thick so you need to apply it with a light hand and blend it well.

PIXI CORRECTION CONCENTRATE, BRIGHTENING PEACH ($12) Save!

This was one of my first correctors and I fell in love with it. The matte peach is very brightening and is great under my eyes to help with my dark circles. It has great ingredients:

  • Rose Hip Extract has great cell regenerating and skin elasticity boosting properties
  • Vitamin A provides an anti-aging effect
  • Vitamin C brightens and revitalizes
  • Vitamin E nourishes and protects

The price is right and other than the small opening on the pot it’s excellent.

BECCA UNDER EYE BRIGHTENING CORRECTOR ($30) Splurge

If you follow me on Beauty Info Zone you know this is a favorite. This is a light and bright pink with a soft creamy finish. While it’s technically not a concealer, I don’t need one when I use this. I like the bigger opening on the jar and I like the consistency of the corrector. Some days it’s a little too bright for me if my dark circles are rearing their ugliest head.

Urban Decay Naked Skin Color Correctors in Peach & Pink, Sephora Bright Future Color Corrector in Green

SEPHORA COLLECTION BRIGHT FUTURE COLOR CORRECTOR in GREEN ($14) Save

While the Sephora brand Bright Future Color Correctors come in 5 shades, they are always sold out. Right now the green and yellow are available online but once the pink and peach come in, they sell out instantly. That’s because the price is half that of the similar Urban Decay Color Correctors. The main difference that I see between the two brands is the applicator. Sephora Collection’s isn’t quite as nice and less comes out so you work a little harder. It’s definitely green and it applies dark at first but using a sponge I can blend it down easily. I use it by my nostrils and just under where I have the most redness and spot treat other areas. They key is to blend but not RUB away.

Urban Decay Naked Skin Color Correctors in Peach & Pink, Sephora Bright Future Color Corrector in Green

URBAN DECAY NAKED SKIN COLOR CORRECTING FLUID in PEACH & PINK ($28) Splurge

I first bought this in Peach and liked it so much I went back for the Pink. The consistency of these is great for correcting, they’re soft and blend extremely well without a lot of work. They are what’s getting the most use in my correcting routine these days. The Peach looks very orange at first but it blends down enough to cover dark circles without showing as orange. Pink is meant to brighten dark areas. I sort of say “eeny meeny” to decide which to use each day. A sponge is the tool I prefer with these. I first warm them with my finger then use my sponge to softly blend these.

MAKE UP FOR EVER 5 CAMOUFLAGE CREAM PALETTE ($40) Splurge

Make Up For Ever 5 Camouflage Cream Palette

Make Up For Ever 5 Camouflage Cream Palette

I bought this palette when I was freelancing, as you can see it’s unused and I didn’t swatch it. It is really more of a concealing palette but the colors are mostly too dark for me. This is #1 the lightest one (for light to medium skin tones with redness concerns) and there are 5 total. I probably should have bought #5 (pro palette featuring color correcting shades for most skin tones and highlighter/concealer) since it’s more for correcting than concealing.

FACE STOCKHOLM CORRECTOR QUAD ($32) Splurge

Face Stockholm Corrector Quad

Face Stockholm Corrector Quad in Ljus

The Face Stockholm Corrector Quad came in a Wantable subscription and was one of the highlights of my years long subscription. Ljus is the lightest of the 3 Corrector Quads available. Mine has been used too much to photograph but I really did like having this all in one quad. While I didn’t get much use out of the yellow I did from the other 3 shades.

As you can see, I’m fascinated with these type of products and totally obsessed with them lately. While this craze has cost me a lot lately, I’m enjoying using all of these (well not the MUFE which I haven’t broken into yet). It’s hard to recommend just one but to save money you might want to look at the Sephora Collection colors or a quad like Face Stockholm’s.

What do you like for color corrector? I’m always up for more.  — Marcia

Face Stockholm Smart Face Color Wheels to enhance your beauty

face stockholm logo

When the Beauty Info Zone team gets together we talk cosmetics and skin care which is of no surprise to anyone reading. One of our dreams is a shopping trip to New York, and high up on that list is going to the Face Stockholm store. There we would shop to our heart’s content (and our husband’s dismay) since Face Stockholm has always been a favorite of ours. We’ve been lucky enough to receive products from them in the past and overjoyed to have received two of their newest spring items – Smart Beauty Color Wheels. There are two newly released wheels which can be used for eyes, lips, and cheeks. At least a part of our dream has come true with these wheels.

MARCIA has the Smart Face Nude Color Wheel

FACE Stockholm Smart Face Nude Color Wheel

FACE Stockholm Smart Face Nude Color Wheel

The color wheels that Lisa and I have are like day and night. I’m the day and she’s the night. The Nude Color Wheel contains 2 blush balms that are light as air, 1 moisturizing lip salve that contains Vitamin E and 1 illuminating highlighter. What you end up with is a barely there way to highlight, contour, and color for a “just me” look.

FACE Stockholm Smart Face Nude Color Wheel

FACE Stockholm Smart Face Nude Color Wheel

The shades in this are for a no makeup look. A look that just finishes you without being obvious. Three of the four shades barely show up at first but once you let them settle they’ll give you that hint of color that looks refreshing.

FACE Stockholm Smart Face Nude Color Wheel

The Lip Salve (balm) is a sheer rose that feels wonderful on my lips (top left corner). It gives me just the smallest bit of a tint so it looks like MLBB (my lips but better). It’s not long-lasting because of the soft texture but with the Vitamin E added to it, it’s good for your lips.

The two Cheek Balms are also sheer. Those are the two that are kitty-corner from each other. One gives a beautiful golden glow while the other is a soft pink. It’s the type of look I like when I go to my friend’s lake house (and sit in the shade). I’ve got some color and contour but it’s not enough for anyone to wonder why I’m made up in that setting.

The Highlighter is my favorite. It’s a bright white that can be used every day for highlighting or on my eyes for a pretty shine. I like it on my browbone or my cheekbones.

At $24 this has 4 products that you’ll love to use when the sun is out and you want to look like a summer goddess without the fuss.

LISA has the Smart Face Bright Color Wheel

The Bright Color Wheel is most definitely the polar opposite of the Nude Color Wheel in terms of shades…could this be a more perfect ‘I love spring and summer’ wheel of happiness?

These juicy shades work for both lips and cheeks. They are very sheer, so while the colors look intense in the wheel, they go on rather subtle but the tint does have lasting power. I thought for sure that colors this moist and juicy looking would be tacky on the skin, but they dry down quickly to more of a satiny finish.

A trick I love to use is layering cool and warm colors, and this color wheel has perfect shades for it…the layering does magical things on lips as well on cheeks. I especially like the combination of the deepest red and the lightest pink. On lips, I use the red as a base then put the pink smack in the middle for a beautiful color combo that gives the illusion of larger lips (always a plus!).

FACE Stockholm Smart Face Bright Color Wheel

The shades are all very easy to blend. I typically use my fingers, but a nylon brush is terrific too. What I really love is how travel-friendly this color wheel is and I can’t wait to toss it into my beach bag for some fabulous, easy color while I sit under my beach umbrella.

Krämögonskugga cream shadows are the most long wearing, waterproof creams I’ve ever worn and I’ve worn a lot of brands! When they featured their newest shades in Mohair and Flannel I couldn’t wait to get those and happily they were sent for review.

Face Stockholm Krämögonskugga Dream Cream Eyeshadows in Mohair and Flannel

Face Stockholm Krämögonskugga Dream Cream Eyeshadows in Mohair and Flannel

I’m crazy about these. I apply them with a fluffy brush and smooth them out with my fingers and the brush. There’s no primer needed where I apply them since they don’t crease on me or fade. They stay true from morning to late night. While these are highly pigmented you can easily control the intensity of them since they are buildable and quite easy to blend.

The jars are quite small but you use so little of the product that they’ll last forever. I have some from 2 years ago that are still as smooth and easy to apply as these newer ones.

MOHAIR surprised me when I went to swatch and wear. It’s so much prettier on than it looked in the pot. It’s a lightly shimmered golden bronze. Since these layer well I’ll wear it in the crease with a powder highlighter shadow and a complementary lid shade. It can also be worn in the crease with Flannel on the lid for a very striking look.

FLANNEL is also lightly shimmered but not metallic like Mohair. It’s a beautiful forest green. Face Stockholm mentions layering these shadows under powder shadows but I also like them on top of a powder. Flannel is too dark for me to wear as a base shade although if I layer a black powder over it creates a very hot smokey eye.

What is inside Lisa’s vintage purse?

I am all about purses, but not really the latest…although I definitely appreciate a Chanel or a Prada when I see one! My style is more boho or vintage, and when I find a gorgeous vintage purse I just about turn inside out. I love my stunning vintage purse that was actually a gift to me from my most beloved friend, who obviously understands my preferences because it is perfect for me.

It may not have a label, but I love it!

Now, I am a realist and I know I am a major procrastinator (just ask my poor, ever-patient blogging partner Marcia), so I just keep this purse filled with the perfect products at all times. That way, when I am running late for a fancy evening or event – and I am ALWAYS running late – I can just grab this and go, knowing that I have everything I need.

Vintage purse inside

My favorite dressy purse contains a few beautiful and essential items that I was sent last year from Mont Bleu, an online site that features Swarovski jewelry and crystal nail files. This particular makeup mirror is still available – you can find it right HERE.

I always have a nail file with me and I love this crystal file from Mont Bleu.

My Senna Blush & Bronze Duo in Beached Peach is always perfect for touch ups…have you ever noticed that nothing perks up your look quicker than a bit of blush??  I also love my little Crown Brush C109 Mini Bronzer Brush. Exactly what is needed for a purse.

Luck favors the prepared with the Minimergency Kit. It’s from the ‘Good Luck Series’ and the little four-leaf clover never fails to make me feel lucky. This little kit holds 16 different items that are truly essentials and it’s only 3.5″ x 2″ x 2″ so it fits into the palm of your hand. I am astounded at what fits into this mini life saver: hairspray; dental floss, band aids, and Blistex; Advil; a mini sewing kit that also includes a set of earring backs and clear elastics; and double-sided tape, breath mint drops; an emery board; a tampon; and clear nail polish. Just think of how many times you wished you had one of those items and couldn’t find one anywhere. Also included are three foil packs: nail polish remover, stain remover, and a deodorant towelette.

Vintage purse Mini Emergency Kit

I use a wonderful little box that came with some Nudestix items to house my lippies. I always have a lip balm and this one is Savannah Bee Beautiful Sugar Lip Balm. My lipstick is the gorgeous Julie Hewett Oona Noir, and I love it with my Alison Raffaele Lip Gloss in Luscious, a shimmery gold, over top. I also carry my Face Stockholm Lip Brush that is the perfect size.Vintage purse lippies

The last items I throw into my purse before heading out the door include my phone, a Samsung Galaxy. I know people love their iPhones, but I am an Android girl all the way.

They have mirrored, gradient lenses and actually came with a hard case and cleaning cloth too. They are the most expensive sunglasses I have ever owned, but worth every single penny. They are still available on ShopBop in blue and in purple.

Top Ten red nail polishes

Favorite red nail polishes #beautyinfozone

Favorite red nail polishes #beautyinfozone

It’s Top Ten Tuesday and we’re going red. Each blogger is picking their favorite red items so they could be anything. I’m all about red nails. I love red nail polish and wore it for years and years. I’d wear pink in the summer and red the rest of the year. I’ve expanded horizons but to me there’s nothing like a good red. If it’s metallic, that’s all the better.

Top Ten red polishes #beautyinfozone

In no particular order here are the reds I can wear again and again and never tire of. In the meantime my nail drawers are filled with more reds but I narrowed it down to:

butter LONDON, A-England, FACE Stockholm, Illamasqua, FABY

butter LONDON, A-England, FACE Stockholm, Illamasqua, FABY

1.  butter LONDON Knees Up – this metallic red speaks for itself. It lasts and lasts and shines the entire time. This is one of my very favorite butter LONDON polishes and it’s still available.

2.  a-england Perceval – this is called a ‘splendid and resplendent red’ by a-england and it’s definitely splendid. I am a big fan of a-england polishes and would own them all if I could. This deep ruby has a subtle shimmer that makes it perfect.

4.  Illamasqua Scarab – I haven’t worn this polish in forever and in my mind it was redder than it shows on the wheel. Instead it’s a stunning deep burgundy with subtle shimmer that’s a touch metallic.

Makeup Wars tackles black eyeliners

Makeup Wars has decided to do a very basic, one might say boring, topic this week – black eyeliners. As a blogger with limited photography skills as well as no photoshop program, I can’t even make it pretty. But I can tell you about my favorites and it’s more than possible that you’ll learn about a liner or two that you’d want to try.

6 favorite black liquid eyeliners

6 favorite black liquid eyeliners

I live for eyeliner (in a cosmetic way that is). I feel dull and unfinished without it. It is an obsession of mine. This past year I’ve been on a quest for the perfect brown liquid eyeliner. In that quest though I found a lot of black liquid eyeliners, many more than brown.  Just about every brand makes a black liquid. But they are not created equal. Read about my experience with an Essence liner for proof of that.

6 favorite black liquid liners - it's the point of it all

6 favorite black liquid liners – it’s the point of it all

I want a liquid eyeliner with a firm point, one that is dark black, one that I can make a thin line with and one that doesn’t make my eyes water. I want a liner that lasts the entire day but that removes easily with eye makeup remover. I want one that doesn’t crack or disappear if my eyes tear up. Not too much to ask, is it? Let’s see which ones can meet my criteria.

EDDIE FUNKHOUSER Ultra Definition Eye Lining Stylus is the one that started it all for me. It wasn’t my first black liquid eyeliner. I’d tried many. But it made me stand up and take notice. Here’s what I said before and it stands to this day: “This doesn’t fade or smudge, it lasts through even my major hot flashes, it doesn’t migrate, and it’s so black that it’s blacker than black. It practically applies itself, it’s that easy to use.” I first got it as a PR sample and I’ve since bought it so I won’t be without. ($10.99)

FACE STOCKHOLM PRECISION LIQUID EYELINER is the first black liquid liner I reviewed on Beauty Info Zone. I remember when I received it from the company and how excited I was. I use this often still and it’s as precise as the day the first day. The nib of the pen hasn’t broken down at all. It’s still as perfect as in its early life. ($36)

Face Stockholm Precision Eyeliner

Face Stockholm Precision Eyeliner

YOUNGBLOOD EYE-MAZING LIQUID LINER IN NOIR is the newest addition to my collection. I am blown away by the Youngblood Eye Liquid Liner Pens. They come in 5 shades which are all great. Marron, the brown, is holy grail for me – the best brown liquid eyeliner I’ve found. Noir, the black, isn’t far behind. These liners are good for the entire day, no matter the circumstances. Noir glides on without skipping and I get the thin line that I prefer. ($26)

Youngblood Eye-Mazing Liquid Liner Pen

Youngblood Eye-Mazing Liquid Liner Pen

SENNA PINPOINT MICRO TIP LIQUID EYELINER is especially great if you feel you have unsteady hands for liquid liners. At the top where you hold it the plastic is somewhat indented and the material is more matte making it easier to hold onto. There’s no sliding of your fingertips. This liner is wonderful if you want to create a cat eye and Senna has some great tips on how to do that. ($20)

Senna Pinpoint Liquid Liner

Senna Pinpoint Liquid Liner

CAILYN IDEFINE LIQUID EYELINER is my new favorite product from Cailyn. I’ve got a slew of eyeliners from Cailyn but this is the one that I’m using the most. The brush is the thinnest of the 6 I’m sharing today. It’s a very flexible yet firm felt tip that applies easily plus it’s a super dark black. ($18)

Cailyn Idefine liquid eyeliner

Cailyn Idefine liquid eyeliner

EYEKO SKINNY MINI LIQUID EYELINER was in one of my many subscription boxes and it’s a treasure. The full size is available at Sephora for $16. I find this to be more of a blackened charcoal. It’s not super black, it’s not a harsh shade, so it’s a great addition when I don’t feel like my liner looking too dark. It’s made me want to try the waterproof Eyeko Eye Do Liquid Liner next.

Eyeko Skinny Liquid Eyeliner

Eyeko Skinny Liquid Eyeliner

So there’s my sea of black. The only thing that could make me happier (eyeliner wise that is) would be if these wonderful liners also came in a dark brown. Then I’d be doing a happy dance. In the meantime, I’m loving these black liquid eyeliners. I hope some of my blogger buddies have some suggestions in their posts. Have you tried any of these? Do you have an idea for a black liquid I should try? — Marcia

The best eyeshadow, lip gloss, and nail polish for the Fourth of July

Happy Fourth of July!  Here is a holiday cosmetics Rorschach test for you.  What do you see in this photo?

photo from sf.funcheap.com

photo from sf.funcheap.com

Did you say patriotic Elvis?  Or did you say inspiration for your Fourth of July cosmetics???

Since you read this blog, I am guessing the latter.  And I’m with you!  Here are my top red, white, and blue eyeshadows, lippies, and nail polishes.

Red white and blue!

All you need for the Fourth of July!

Let’s start with RED.

left to right:

left to right: Face Stockholm Pearl Eyeshadow 24, tarte cosmetics Lipsurgence lip cream in Promise; Zoya Nail Polish in Lisa

My red choices always tend to be on the ‘berry’ side of the realm.  Face Stockholm has the consummate raspberry red eyeshadow with Pearl Eyeshadow 24 – and yes, it does double duty as a blush.  It even does triple duty as a lip stain when mixed with some clear lip gloss.

Speaking of lippies, my most-loved red for this holiday is tarte cosmetics Lipsurgence Lip Creme in Promise.  This is a chubby lip creme that is self-sharpening and has a slightly minty taste.  It is a primo shiny strawberry red – not too warm or too cool.

My red nail polish choice is – but of course – Zoya in Lisa.  Lisa is the supreme 4th of July red – ruby-red with pink and red shimmer.  It’s fun and festive and not TOO over the top…just like me?  Maybe!

Next is WHITE.  All three of these products should be in every makeup artists bag.  Period.

left to right:

left to right:  Makeup Geek Eyeshadow in White Lies; Whitening Lightning Lip Gloss in Phuket; Cult Nail Polish in Tempest

The cream of the crop white eyeshadow is, hands down, Makeup Geek Eyeshadow in White Lies ($5.99).  This is a pure white matte shade that should be in everyone’s collection.

If you are looking for a true white lip gloss, Whitening Lightning Color Your Smile Lighted Lip Gloss in Phuket Exotic ($24) is your answer.  This is an opaque white gloss that can be worn alone, or it can be mixed with other colors to create a lighter shade.

My go-to white nail polish is Tempest from Cult Nail Polish ($12).   It’s an absolute pure glossy white, and it looks great on its own or is, of course, perfect for nail art.

Last but not least, BLUE.

left to right;

left to right:  Senna Eye Color Glow in Capri; Whitening Lightning in Bahama; Lacquer Lust in Zircon

I adore blue eyeshadow with brown eyes, and my most cherished blue is Senna Eye Color Glow in Capri ($18). It is the loveliest sapphire blue I have ever seen.

My blue lippie choice is yet another from Whitening Lightning, this one is Bahama Exotic.  Yes, it’s a daring choice, but let me tell you that blue makes your teeth look super white!  If you can pull off blue, this is a lip gloss you need.

I have tons of blue nail polishes (can’t say that about lip products, ha!) so this was a difficult choice…but ultimately Laquer Lust’s Zircon ($12.50) won out.  This teal blue with microshimmer was part of the infamous Birthstone Collection, and lucky us it’s still available thanks to a relaunch!  The color is simply stunning, and the reflection from all those fireworks will only make it even better.

For those who would rather categorize by product type, here is the lowdown.
