Makeup Wars tackles black eyeliners

Makeup Wars has decided to do a very basic, one might say boring, topic this week – black eyeliners. As a blogger with limited photography skills as well as no photoshop program, I can’t even make it pretty. But I can tell you about my favorites and it’s more than possible that you’ll learn about a liner or two that you’d want to try.

6 favorite black liquid eyeliners

6 favorite black liquid eyeliners

I live for eyeliner (in a cosmetic way that is). I feel dull and unfinished without it. It is an obsession of mine. This past year I’ve been on a quest for the perfect brown liquid eyeliner. In that quest though I found a lot of black liquid eyeliners, many more than brown.  Just about every brand makes a black liquid. But they are not created equal. Read about my experience with an Essence liner for proof of that.

6 favorite black liquid liners - it's the point of it all

6 favorite black liquid liners – it’s the point of it all

I want a liquid eyeliner with a firm point, one that is dark black, one that I can make a thin line with and one that doesn’t make my eyes water. I want a liner that lasts the entire day but that removes easily with eye makeup remover. I want one that doesn’t crack or disappear if my eyes tear up. Not too much to ask, is it? Let’s see which ones can meet my criteria.

EDDIE FUNKHOUSER Ultra Definition Eye Lining Stylus is the one that started it all for me. It wasn’t my first black liquid eyeliner. I’d tried many. But it made me stand up and take notice. Here’s what I said before and it stands to this day: “This doesn’t fade or smudge, it lasts through even my major hot flashes, it doesn’t migrate, and it’s so black that it’s blacker than black. It practically applies itself, it’s that easy to use.” I first got it as a PR sample and I’ve since bought it so I won’t be without. ($10.99)

FACE STOCKHOLM PRECISION LIQUID EYELINER is the first black liquid liner I reviewed on Beauty Info Zone. I remember when I received it from the company and how excited I was. I use this often still and it’s as precise as the day the first day. The nib of the pen hasn’t broken down at all. It’s still as perfect as in its early life. ($36)

YOUNGBLOOD EYE-MAZING LIQUID LINER IN NOIR is the newest addition to my collection. I am blown away by the Youngblood Eye Liquid Liner Pens. They come in 5 shades which are all great. Marron, the brown, is holy grail for me – the best brown liquid eyeliner I’ve found. Noir, the black, isn’t far behind. These liners are good for the entire day, no matter the circumstances. Noir glides on without skipping and I get the thin line that I prefer. ($26)

SENNA PINPOINT MICRO TIP LIQUID EYELINER is especially great if you feel you have unsteady hands for liquid liners. At the top where you hold it the plastic is somewhat indented and the material is more matte making it easier to hold onto. There’s no sliding of your fingertips. This liner is wonderful if you want to create a cat eye and Senna has some great tips on how to do that. ($20)

CAILYN IDEFINE LIQUID EYELINER is my new favorite product from Cailyn. I’ve got a slew of eyeliners from Cailyn but this is the one that I’m using the most. The brush is the thinnest of the 6 I’m sharing today. It’s a very flexible yet firm felt tip that applies easily plus it’s a super dark black. ($18)

Cailyn Idefine liquid eyeliner

EYEKO SKINNY MINI LIQUID EYELINER was in one of my many subscription boxes and it’s a treasure. The full size is available at Sephora for $16. I find this to be more of a blackened charcoal. It’s not super black, it’s not a harsh shade, so it’s a great addition when I don’t feel like my liner looking too dark. It’s made me want to try the waterproof Eyeko Eye Do Liquid Liner next.

Eyeko Skinny Liquid Eyeliner

Eyeko Skinny Liquid Eyeliner

So there’s my sea of black. The only thing that could make me happier (eyeliner wise that is) would be if these wonderful liners also came in a dark brown. Then I’d be doing a happy dance. In the meantime, I’m loving these black liquid eyeliners. I hope some of my blogger buddies have some suggestions in their posts. Have you tried any of these? Do you have an idea for a black liquid I should try? — Marcia

The best eyeshadow, lip gloss, and nail polish for the Fourth of July

Happy Fourth of July!  Here is a holiday cosmetics Rorschach test for you.  What do you see in this photo?

photo from sf.funcheap.com

photo from sf.funcheap.com

Did you say patriotic Elvis?  Or did you say inspiration for your Fourth of July cosmetics???

Since you read this blog, I am guessing the latter.  And I’m with you!  Here are my top red, white, and blue eyeshadows, lippies, and nail polishes.

Red white and blue!

All you need for the Fourth of July!

Let’s start with RED.

left to right:

left to right: Face Stockholm Pearl Eyeshadow 24, tarte cosmetics Lipsurgence lip cream in Promise; Zoya Nail Polish in Lisa

My red choices always tend to be on the ‘berry’ side of the realm.  Face Stockholm has the consummate raspberry red eyeshadow with Pearl Eyeshadow 24 – and yes, it does double duty as a blush.  It even does triple duty as a lip stain when mixed with some clear lip gloss.

Speaking of lippies, my most-loved red for this holiday is tarte cosmetics Lipsurgence Lip Creme in Promise.  This is a chubby lip creme that is self-sharpening and has a slightly minty taste.  It is a primo shiny strawberry red – not too warm or too cool.

My red nail polish choice is – but of course – Zoya in Lisa.  Lisa is the supreme 4th of July red – ruby-red with pink and red shimmer.  It’s fun and festive and not TOO over the top…just like me?  Maybe!

Next is WHITE.  All three of these products should be in every makeup artists bag.  Period.

left to right:

left to right:  Makeup Geek Eyeshadow in White Lies; Whitening Lightning Lip Gloss in Phuket; Cult Nail Polish in Tempest

The cream of the crop white eyeshadow is, hands down, Makeup Geek Eyeshadow in White Lies ($5.99).  This is a pure white matte shade that should be in everyone’s collection.

If you are looking for a true white lip gloss, Whitening Lightning Color Your Smile Lighted Lip Gloss in Phuket Exotic ($24) is your answer.  This is an opaque white gloss that can be worn alone, or it can be mixed with other colors to create a lighter shade.

My go-to white nail polish is Tempest from Cult Nail Polish ($12).   It’s an absolute pure glossy white, and it looks great on its own or is, of course, perfect for nail art.

Last but not least, BLUE.

left to right;

left to right:  Senna Eye Color Glow in Capri; Whitening Lightning in Bahama; Lacquer Lust in Zircon

I adore blue eyeshadow with brown eyes, and my most cherished blue is Senna Eye Color Glow in Capri ($18). It is the loveliest sapphire blue I have ever seen.

My blue lippie choice is yet another from Whitening Lightning, this one is Bahama Exotic.  Yes, it’s a daring choice, but let me tell you that blue makes your teeth look super white!  If you can pull off blue, this is a lip gloss you need.

I have tons of blue nail polishes (can’t say that about lip products, ha!) so this was a difficult choice…but ultimately Laquer Lust’s Zircon ($12.50) won out.  This teal blue with microshimmer was part of the infamous Birthstone Collection, and lucky us it’s still available thanks to a relaunch!  The color is simply stunning, and the reflection from all those fireworks will only make it even better.

For those who would rather categorize by product type, here is the lowdown.

Primarily pastels: 3 eyeshadow shades from Face Stockholm

Days are getting longer, trees are budding, flowers are blooming, and it’s finally warm again! I have put away my dark heavy shades and made room for light and airy color options. Face Stockholm is an excellent place to turn for their beautiful palette of fresh, pretty pastel shades, and they sent us some great shades that are perfect for brown eyes.

Face Stockholm pastels 2

Face Stockholm says, “Light lilacs, petal pinks, minty greens, sky blues and lemony yellows, mix to make a smooth and delicious collection of sweet shades that will delight any and every palette with their refreshing versatility.

Subtle and fleeting in nature, these sheer washes of color offer a playful palette that can be ethereal and easy, light and lovely or striking and sultry.”

all the pretty pastel shades!

all the pretty pastel shades!

I love their shade recommendations for different eye colors:

For blue eyes, try blue, buttercup and lavender.

For green eyes, try mint, lavender and blush.

For brown eyes, try lavender, blue and mint.

I have brown eyes, so my blue shade is Pearl Shadow #16 ($19), mint is Vintage Eye Dust ($22), and lavender is Sky Eye Dust ($22).

I absolutely adore Face Stockholm pearl eyeshadows. Honestly, I have so many eyeshadows I almost never reach pan…but I can see pan on every single Face Stockholm pearl eyeshadow I own. They go on like butter, and the ‘pearl’ makes them fantastic lid shades or highlighters. They have awesome pigmentation and last all day.

Pearl Eyeshadow #16 is yet another winning pearl shadow –  a shimmery ice blue that is such a happy shade…and it’s a wearable, flattering shade too.  It really does make brown eyes ‘pop’.

Vintage

For the mint shade recommended for brown eyes, I went for the Vintage Eye Dust. This is a shimmery minty green with golden tones. Oh my is this gorgeous! It really brings out the green in my mostly brown eyes.

For the lavender to compliment brown eyes, I chose Sky Eye Dust. Strange name for a purple shade, but this shimmery blue-lavender is simply to die for.  Just look at how sublime that swatch is! This is a purple shade that even those wary of purple can wear.

Top 10 Tuesday shares spring and summer nail polish

Top 10 Tuesdays picked a topic that’s close to my heart for this go around. I’m a nail polish junkie even if I have no artistic skills and can’t even apply well. I love having a collection of the prettiest and newest nail polishes but I rarely forget about my previous ones. I didn’t quite narrow it down to 10 but I forced myself to stop adding new ones. It’s easy to see what my favorite colors are in my pictures but I’m always willing to experiment. I hope you enjoy what you see. Let me know if any of these are favorites of yours too. — Marcia

1. TRIND Caring Color in SURF’S UP – this is the prettiest teal I own. I’m crazy about metallic polishes and Surf’s Up is an outstanding one. The wear was great. Toes will cry out for this shade but so do my nails.*

2. FORMULA X in A LITTLE SEXY - I feel a whole lot sexy with this denim blue almost lavender polish. This set me off on a light blue craze but this is my favorite of the ones I used. Pick this up at Sephora before it’s gone since it’s a limited edition.

3. ROCOCCO in SANDRINE CREAM – I love this blue too. It’s deeper and less denim than the FormulaX but it’s a stunning light blue that is perfect now and will remain so in the summer. I bought this online but it’s harder to find now.

Rococco Sandrine Cream polish

4. COLOR ME MONTHLY – CHIFFON – Whenever Color Me Monthly sends a polish I swoon. The surprise of this subscription box is what makes it so much fun. Chiffon is a beautiful lavender that I hope will be in their Vault so you can pick it up if you don’t subscribe.*

5. FACE STOCKHOLM #168 - Not an original name but this purple is just too pretty for me to care!*

6. FACE STOCKHOLM AURA – Last summer Face Stockholm came out with holographic nail polishes and Aura blew me away. Imagine sitting in the sun and being able to look at this beauty. It shines and so will you.*

7. butter LONDON MOLLY CODDLED – This is the first Radiant Orchid item I bought once the color was announced by Pantone. It’s still my favorite Radiant Orchid cosmetic. This will always be in style, no matter what the color of the year is.

8. FORMULA X in FIERY – I do love my red polish. Fiery is a flaming red metallic that you’ll love all year long. This is truly seasonless – wear it on your toes this summer and your nails any time.

9. DIOR in FRONT ROW – I obviously didn’t need another red polish but this is more of a pinky red and it’s Dior’s new gel formula so I was justified in buying this. The wear and application are terrific and I’ll be back for more new Dior now.

10. butter LONDON in KERFUFFLE – The best peach I’ve ever tried. I normally don’t look good in peach but this is a pinky peach that is perfection. I hope Ulta does more BOGO so I can buy more colors like this.

11. and 12. butter LONDON LOLLY BRIGHTS in Lolly and Stroppy – These two polishes got compliments galore and will continue to do so all spring and summer. They are metallics with shimmer embedded in them. The colors are bright and happy.*

Face Stockholm’s unique BB Natural Beauty Balm

courtesy of facestockholm.com

courtesy of facestockholm.com

I am in love with 2 things – Face Stockholm BB Natural Beauty Balm with SPF 30 and their statement “Everything you want to BB!”. Cleverness gets me all the time but what makes me stick around is quality. Face Stockholm sent this BB Cream ($38) for review and I was immediately attracted to it because it’s different than any others in my collection.

FACE Stockholm Natural Beauty Balm

FACE Stockholm Natural Beauty Balm

This is a compact BB Cream while others are in squeeze tubes. Depending on your skintone this will be different things to different people. It only comes in 2 shades (light and dark) which is the only downfall of the product if you are looking to wear it as a foundation. But even with just two shades there are so many other benefits that it is a wonderful BB Cream.

In actuality BB Creams weren’t truly developed to be foundations but in the US it seems that most are tinted enough to take care of the category. Face Stockholm intends this to hydrate, prime, conceal, and correct. For me it hits all these high points and more.

Face Stockholm BB Natural Beauty Balm

Face Stockholm BB Natural Beauty Balm

Hydrate: This contains vitamin E which provides moisture plus antioxidants. It also uses Spilanthes Flower Extract in order to help relax our fine lines.

Prime: You can use this as your primer if you want. It wears well under other foundations and is your SPF and hydration system. It contains SPF 30 (Titanium and Zinc Oxides provide UVA/UVB sun protection). face stockhom bb back box

Conceal: Use this as a spot concealer, especially under your eyes.

Correct: I love this as my foundation and find that it imparts a very healthy glow while providing a good amount of coverage to my skin. I wear this in Fair which is said to be for fair and light skin tones.

Face Stockholm Natural Beauty Balm

Face Stockholm Natural Beauty Balm in Fair #1

The Natural Beauty Balm is very creamy and easy to apply. I’ve used my fingers many times but my favorite application method is a fluffy foundation brush. The one I use most is by Urban Decay (Optical Blurring Brush). For me a traditional flat foundation brush doesn’t give it the softness that a fluffier one does, plus I like using a synthetic brush with a cream product. Looking over Face Stockholm’s brushes I’d choose the Contouring Brush #31 to use with this.

I’ve been wearing this for almost 10 months so I’ve experienced it in every season. When it was bitter cold this winter I found it to be comforting and to give me plenty of coverage. In the warm weather it doesn’t melt away on me which is what I love most about it.

I already had a love affair going with Face Stockholm so to be able to use their BB Natural Beauty Balm with SPF 30 just adds to the infatuation. If I took a recent picture of this you’d see how much it’s been used and will continue to be used.

Spring blush the Makeup Wars way

Spring blush favorites

Spring blush favorites

Makeup Wars is back to redden your cheeks, bring a flush to your face and enchant you with beautiful blush. We’ve picked some of our favorites that are gracing our cheeks this spring and into the summer. I’ve chosen 9 but I could have chosen 90 most likely.

If you are a Beauty Info Zone reader then you know that I love cream blush. I’m much more likely to buy a cream blush than a powder one so I’m starting with my springiest creams.

Tarte, Maybelline, Face Stockholm, Josie Maran, Make Up For Ever

1. Tarte cheek stains come in 8 shades and you’ll have a tough time picking out a favorite. I chose Fearless since that’s the one I’ve been using the most lately. It’s a pinky coral and seems to look great with almost every eye look I choose.

2. Maybelline Master Glaze Cream Blush Stick in Pink Fever is my version of Radiant Orchid in a blush. It’s one of the best buys of the year for me since I love the longevity of the product, the perky color and the price. I need to pick up more of these.

3. Face Stockholm Creme Blush in London is getting a lot of love these days. I took a new picture for this review but I’ve used it so much that it looked raggedy. It’s a papaya shade that looks super bright in pictures and swatches but not on my face. I use a light touch when applying this long lasting color.

4. Josie Maran Coconut Watercolor Cheek Gelee in Poppy Paradise is a blush that just doesn’t want to swatch for me. It’s described as ‘warm toned hot pink’ which is a great, if confusing, description. It feels cooling when you apply it. The Cheek Gelee can be used alone or as a stain to wear under a powder if you find blush fades on you. I just might have purchased Pink Escape during the Sephora 15% off sale.

5. Make Up For Ever HD Second Skin Cream Blush in 210 but I easily could have picked 225 and 330 since the 3 I have are scrumptious. I love the colors of these. They are so smooth and as Lisa said “DREAMY”. We’ve reviewed 6 of these and can’t praise them enough. Find a color (or 5) that you love and you’ll never be sorry.

I’m no slacker when it comes to powder blush and have a small mountain of those too. The 4 I’ve chosen are the ones I’m finding most versatile for spring.

6. TheBalm InStain in Argyle is my latest buy. I purchased it from Hautelook and will purchase more the next time they are on sale. I love the color of Argyle (petal pink) and I love not only how smoothly it applies but it has amazing longevity. It does have stain-like qualities. The pigmentation is intense even though Argyle is the lightest shade available.

7. Tarina Tarantino Dollskin Cheek in Parasol is absolutely beautious. I constantly express my love for the Dollskin Cream blushes so I was excited to receive this powder blush. It’s as amazing as the cream blushes. Parasol is so soft and cream like. It has a gorgeous glow to it. Tarina Tarantino describes it as shimmering bright pink coral. I describe it as beautiful.

8. Senna Sheer Face Color in Pink Diva is the sweetest pink of the group. When I want a pink that’s pink this is what I pick. While the name says sheer, the blush isn’t sheer. It’s loaded with cool tones of pinkness.

9. Eddie Funkhouser Ultra Intensity Cheek Color in A Little Toasted doesn’t appear to be a blush you’d choose for spring but it’s great for that very reason. I sometimes need a very neutral shade and this is a neutral. There’s a brownish mauve tinge to it that was hard to capture but it’s there. It’s almost like a contour color for my fair skin.

FACE Stockholm Spring 2014

I often wonder, why doesn’t FACE Stockholm get more blog press? This is an utterly fantastic line with top-notch products and shades. Spring 2014 at FACE Stockholm is right on trend with natural, peachy-pink shades and a hint of some sassy purple.

The Liquid Mineral Foundation ($36) is a thin, lightweight foundation that provides medium coverage. I have issues with an oily t-zone, but not when I wear this oil-free matte foundation. It comes in a sleek-looking glass bottle with a built-in spatula. I don’t apply the foundation using the spatula – to be completely hygienic I scoop some out onto my metal palette, then apply the foundation using my Beauty Blender. It gives a gorgeous finish that lasts all day. I have Synsk, which is a great shade for those who have that not quite light, not quite medium skin tone.

The Spring 2014 Collection features Pearl Shadow in #36 ($19), which is described as a ‘greige’ shade. It just might be the prettiest eyeshadow I own – it’s no mystery to me why this is one of FACE Stockholm’s most popular eye shadow shades. It goes on as a mixture of pink, taupe, grey, and purple, and it seems to become more purple as the day goes on. I have worn this every single day since it arrived! This eyeshadow is a perfect pop of color in the otherwise neutral palette of the spring collection.

The Blush in Worship ($20) is a velvety, shimmery peachy-pink.
