Top 10 Tuesday Sun Protection Favorites

TOP TEN TUESDAY picked an important topic this week – sunscreen. I can’t believe the number of years I didn’t use sunscreen or used it sporadically. I’m paying the consequences now with too many sunspots. As an oldie, but goodie, sunscreen wasn’t in our family vocabulary. Coppertone was put on us to protect us from the sun but it really just made me burn. Now I know better and I’m an avid fan of SPF products. Here are some of my favorites in no particular order.
1. SUPERGOOP CITY SUNSCREEN SERUM* – Unfortunately I’m out of this but I want to repurchase it. The serum is SPF 30+, has no fragrance and is very lightweight. I used this as my SPF and moisturizer and primer – a triple threat!

2. SUPERGOOP DAILY CORRECT CC CREAM* – This is what I’m using now from Supergoop. It’s actually a lightly tinted SPF cream that provides SPF 35 coverage. It comes in three shades; I have Light to Medium which is a little dark for me (see swatch below). This can also be used as a primer and sunscreen that helps even out skintone. If the color is right for you then it will give you the corrective cream coverage that is so popular with CC Creams.

3. SUPERGOOP ADVANCED AGING EYE CREAM* – How many of you forget about your eye area when thinking about sunscreen? I just assumed my regular sunscreen would be enough but it’s absolutely not. I don’t get that close to my eyes with sunscreen plus that area is so tender and prone to showing aging. This SPF 37 eye cream is a big favorite of mine and not just because it has the best applicator in town.

4. MELANSOL 100% NATURAL SUNSCREEN SPF 30 *- This particular SPF 30 sunscreen is not for everyone but it’s perfect for those of us with very fair skin that never tans and always burns. MelanSol makes a variety of sunscreens for those of you who have a different risk level from the sun. This SPF 30 version is great for midday application when the sun is at its peak or for high activity levels when you’ll be out in the sun for longer periods. It contains active ingredients of zinc oxide and titanium dioxide in its natural, cruelty free, vegan formula. I’ve found it to be hydrating and non-greasy. I love having a product that I know will have extra protection when I’m out on the water or in my yard with the little ones.

5. NEOVA DNA DAMAGE CONTROL *- A broad spectrum SPF 40 makes this a great choice if you want to be without foundation yet have some coverage when outside. They could call this a CC Cream since it’s described as a Color Correction cream that illuminates and brightens with a tinted, pearl finish. It comes in just one shade though with a very light tint. My skin isn’t good enough to go out in public with just this but I’ll wear it for days I’m at home alone or with a light foundation over it if I do go out. I’ve been very impressed with the Neova line and this is no exception.

6. ALGENIST ULTRA LIGHTWEIGHT UV DEFENSE FLUID SPF 50* – This is another of my old favorite sunscreens which I’ve used up. I’ve talked about it several times in posts. It contains Titanium Dioxide (2%), Zinc Oxide (17.1%) and Octinoxate (7.5%) along with the other fabulous Algenist ingredients that make this brand unique. I won’t go on about it since you can read my previous linked review other than to say, it’s great!

7. and 8. AVEENO PROTECT + HYDRATE LOTION SUNSCREEN* – Aveeno makes two different Protect+Hydrate Lotion Sunscreens. For your face you’ll want Broad Spectrum SPF 50 which is oil free and non-comedogenic. For your body (and face) you want Broad Spectrum SPF 30 which is very hydrating while being protective. These are both new products for 2014 along with an SPF 70 formula. Aveeno is priced right at $9.95 for a 3 oz tube and it delivers sunscreen in an advanced formula that uses their patented Colloidal Oatmeal.

9. and 10. B. KAMINS LIP BALM SPF 20 and VAULT RETRACTABLE LIP BALMS SPF 30 – We absolutely can’t forget our lips and here are two brands that I love using. Lisa reviewed the B Kamins so I picked it up at a local boutique, it’s actually more of a lip protectant than what we think of with a lip balm. It comes in a tube and squeezes out in an emollient balm. Vault Retractable Lip Balms are a twist on the typical balm because it was originally created for use during sports as well as other times. It takes three easy steps: PUSH the plunger (the bottom half) until the tip locks in place; TWIST the plunger to deliver the lip balm; CLICK the trigger to release the tip which closes it back up. Stick it in your pocket and it’s done. Nothing to fall off or lose. While they have a clear lip balm, it’s the tinted ones that are my favorites. There are 8 lightly tinted balms and they’ve lowered the price to $6.99 (from $9) and have free shipping.

Top 10 Tuesday picks favorite eye creams

Give me eye cream now! Give me eye balm immediately! Give me eye serums ASAP. If it’s for the delicate eye area I want it. I’ve reviewed a lot of eye creams so picking just 10 (or 9 as you’ll see) was extremely difficult. Some came to mind instantly because I’m either using them or I’ve bought them again. Others are ones I really enjoyed but picking between them was a difficult choice. My Top Ten are ones I would recommend without a doubt so let’s see what they are:

1. ALGENIST EYE RENEWAL BALM -  I’m on my second jar of the Algenist plus I’ve used up some sample sizes. This is the first eye cream I thought of when we picked this topic. I chose this for my desert island Beauty Spotlight Team and I’d chose it again.

2. KATE SOMERVILLE KateCeuticals MULTI-ACTIVE EYE CREAM - Kate Somerville makes more than one eye cream. I’m sure they are all wonderful but this one is the most wonderful. My eyes drank this up and begged for more. If you are looking for true anti-aging properties, splurge on this.

3. SOMME INSTITUTE EYE – I’ve repurchased every product from Somme Institute. At first I didn’t repurchase EYE but as soon as I was done with it, I missed it. Even though it doesn’t contain SPF it’s one of my favorite daytime eye creams. It’s lightweight and concealer doesn’t crease when I mix it with Somme Eye. Watch for this on Hautelook.

4. SENNA LIFT AND LIGHTEN EYE CREAM – It’s been four years since I reviewed this Senna Eye Cream but I haven’t forgotten it. I bought a second jar at IMATS because I love how it lightens my dark circles and hydrates under my eyes. Plus it’s still only $28 even after all this time.

5. YBF CORRECT – Simple name, not so simple protect. Your Best Face (YBF) tells you succinctly what their products will do and then they prove it by doing research and using the best ingredients to make sure their products work. Correct works!

6. YES TO BLUEBERRIES EYE FIRMING TREATMENT – This is my latest eye cream. I’ve been using it daily for about 6 weeks and I can’t bring myself to move on. It totally surprised me since I’m not a mass market skincare person in general but this has kept my eyes looking less lined, my dark circles at bay and has rid me of morning puffiness. For $15-20 (depending on where you buy it) this is a must to try.

7. LIFT LAB LIFT & FIRM EYE CREAM – The gel like texture of Lift Lab’s Eye Cream is very soothing. It’s lightweight and you don’t even realize you have it on during the daytime. What you will realize is how soft the skin around your eyes feels and how your puffiness isn’t really noticeable.

8. EXUVIANCE AGE REVERSE EYE CONTOUR – The name tells you one of the reasons I like this. I won this in a giveaway almost 4 years ago and wish I had it again. My memory is short when it comes to “why did I come into this room” but not on eye creams. It helps firm the collagen around eyes. I need this again.

9. DERMAdoctor WRINKLE REVENGE RESCUE & PROTECT EYE BALM – This does it all. It moisturizes, firms, reduces puffiness, helps eliminate dark circles, helps with fine lines and bakes cookies. Ok, I’m kidding about the cookies but it would if it could. It’s thicker than most of the others I’ve mentioned but sometimes you need that.

10. EYES by TO GO SPA EYE MASKS – I’m cheating. I can’t help it. When you need a way to make your eyes look less lined and more relaxed you want something like an eye mask. I’ve tried and loved quite a few but I always go back to EYES by ToGoSpa. They now have 3 varieties and it’s hard to pick which you want but you won’t go wrong with any of them. These are collagen eye masks that you want any time you want to look your best.

Neova Illuminating Eye Therapy 4.0 and Cu3 Intensive Lip Repair

My dermatologist uses Neova professional products for office procedures, which is what got me interested in the line several months ago. Then I tried the Serious GlyPeel and I was hooked.  (You can read my review HERE). I was excited to try the Illuminating Eye Therapy 4.0 and the CuIntensive Lip Repair we were sent, and I used them both until I couldn’t squeeze even one more drop from the tubes. Then I was mad that they were all gone. But now I get to tell you all about them!

Illuminating Eye Therapy 4.0 ($58) surprised the heck out of me when I first tried it…it’s blue! Have you ever tried a blue eye cream? Something about that just tickled me and it made me happy every time I used it. Blue is fun and the effective ingredients are even better.

It's blue!!

There are seven main ingredients:

DNA CoFactor, an amalgam of two powerful delivery systems: DNA Repair Enzymes + Copper Peptide Complex® [CpC]: Mitosomes. A liposome encapsulated dna repair enzyme, Arabidopsis Thaliana, aids in the removal of the signs of oxidative damage.

Copper Peptide Complex [CpC]. Also known as Bis (Tripeptide-1) Copper Acetate, a delivery system that uses the body’s natural protective carrier to deliver proprietary copper peptides, an essential micronutrient for skin health, for maximum restorative benefit.

Pinoxide. Exclusive and patented blend supports natural nitric oxide production to speed blood flow and circulation, improving localized microcirculation to diminish the appearance of dark under eye circles.

Silica. Light-diffusing microspheres provide a wrinkle-masking effect.

Dimethicone/Vinyl Dimethicone Crosspolymer. Enhances skin’s barrier function and gives skin a smooth, velvet feel.

Skinmimics. A highly effective blend of new and unique long-chain Ceramides that provides effective skin protection, regeneration and prevention.

Squalane. Light, fast-absorbing emollient oil that hydrates and soothes dry skin.

Basically, this eye cream tackles dark undereye circles that are caused by poor circulation. The silica instantly lightens up the look of the dark circles, and the Pinoxide does the long-term work. Because the ingredients stimulate blood flow, the eye cream reduces puffiness as well. Plus, it also reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

It’s not a thick, heavy cream, but it still hydrates beautifully and I have been extremely happy with my results. Another plus is the packaging – an airless pump ensures the efficacy of the ingredients and is perfectly hygienic. This is a winning eye cream.

Another Neova winner is their CuIntensive Lip Repair ($22). This is truly therapy for your lips.

Copper Peptide Complex [CpC]. Also known as Bis (Tripeptide-1) Copper Acetate, a delivery system that uses the body’s natural protective carrier to deliver proprietary copper peptides, an essential micronutrient for skin health, for maximum restorative benefit.

Petrolatum. Forms an occlusive film on the skin’s surface, preventing moisture loss due to evaporation and protects against irritation.

Mineral Oil. A non-comedogenic, occlusive substance that helps improve the epidermal barrier function.

Glycerin. A humectant that attracts essential moisture to the skin.

Cu3 Intensive Lip Repair is not just chapstick or lip moisturizer. This lip balm not only makes sore, hurting lips feel better instantly, it also repairs the damage. Plus, it reduces the look of those pesky ‘lip lines’ and is a fantastic source of hydration for lips. I adore this, and I am so sad that I used it all up!!

All those dermatologists know what works for skin, and the fact that they choose Neova should convince you to try this line. Everything I have tested has been excellent and I am excited to continue to explore all the fabulous products they have to offer.  - Lisa

Fight those dark circles with derma e Evenly Radiant Dark Circle Eye Creme

And if you are looking for this kind of product that won’t break the bank, well you’ve found it right here with derma e Evenly Radiant Dark Circle Eye Creme. When we were sent this eye cream to test out I realized it had a lot to prove.

squeeze tube

squeeze tube

derma e has created an eye cream that’s formulated with their special Intensive Skin Brightening Complex. derma E Evenly Radiant Dark Circle Eye Creme contains Madonna Lily Plant Stem Cells, Bearberry, Niacinamide, Licorice, Green Tea and C-Ester to help fight discoloration for more a more evenly toned, luminous eye area. In addition it’s enriched with Pycnogenol®, Horse Chestnut and Yarrow — ingredients shown to help diminish dark circles caused by poor circulation.

ingredients

ingredients

It has all the right ingredients to help lighten the dark circles and make our eyes appear brighter. What it doesn’t do is make the dark circles totally disappear. Don’t expect that from this eye cream or any other but it certainly does help make them appear lighter and your eye area more well-rested. By using this lovely moisturizing eye cream you are softening the look around your eyes.

I like to use this in the morning. As soon as I start my whole rigmarole I apply just a dab of this evenly under my eyes. This gives it time to sink in and moisturize my orbital eye area. It just takes a little bit to do the job. You can apply this on your eyelid if you want but I find that any eye cream there is going to interfere with my eyeshadow so that’s not a step I take. You can (and probably should) use this both morning and night.

Here are a few more things I like about derma e Evenly Radiant Dark Circle Eye Creme

-          It is 100% vegan, cruelty-free, paraben-free, sulfate-free, mineral oil-free, lanolin-free, gluten free, GMO-free.

-          It retails for only $27.95 for .5 oz; this is a bargain in the world of eye creams!

-          This is great for all skin types

-          Great for travel since the tube is small and quite portable

-          Because you squeeze out the amount you want from the tip it’s very hygienic

When you look for this try to purchase the new yellow packaging as it’s been reformulated. I’m sure that the previous product was just as good but I like the “new improved” version of items which is what this review is all about. You can find the previous eye cream in the purple packaging sold for less though at places like Vitacost.

I think derma e did a good job of proving that it helps reduce dark circles, fine lines and puffiness for me. It’s been a good companion in the morning whether I use it alone or mix a little with a concealer. It helps me face the day looking a little brighter. — Marcia

Two eye creams from Kate Somerville – you’ll have trouble choosing just one!

kate somerville logoToday’s Kate Somerville review is going to make you a little crazy. We have two eye creams to tempt you with and when you are done reading you won’t know which to choose. But we are sure you will want to select one since they are that good. Kate Somerville is a wonderful line for those of us that want anti-aging products. Your eye area is usually the first place that show lines. We hear about women in their 20′s who are already concerned with fine lines and crow’s feet and that only increases as you get older. But you can help stave away the years with the Kate Somerville line.

As Kate Somerville says: Smooth and soften fragile skin to fight the signs of time.

The delicate contours around the eyes and lips are often the first to reveal fine lines. Yet, a little extra care – and the right blend of sophisticated ingredients – can yield remarkably renewing results. My highly effective eye and lip treatments utilize advanced anti-aging formulas that work hard to repair and revive.

Marcia’s eye cream:

Kate Somerville KateCeuticals Multi-Active Repair Eye Cream

Kate Somerville KateCeuticals Multi-Active Repair Eye Cream

I am so lucky that I have been able to test KateCeuticals Multi-Active Repair Eye Cream. This is such a luxury product and one that makes me feel like my under eye area is more youthful appearing than ever. The KateCeuticals products are a particular segment of Kate Somerville. This is the creme de la crème of her already amazing line. KateCeuticals are age-defying products created to leave us illuminated and healthier looking. They contain high-performance ingredients and Anti-aging Actives to improve the appearance of firmness and combined them with luxurious Fruit Extracts and powerful Antioxidants to restore and renew skin.

I’m totally in love with the fact that Multi-Active Repair Eye Cream is able to lift the appearance of the skin under my eyes and make the area look less lined. I’m very critical when I take pictures of my eyes for the blog and have cut back on photos because of that. But I’m noticing a rejuvenation that is thrilling me.

the airless top

the airless top

This eye cream ($135) is in a wonderful airless container. I push down gently on the top and out comes the perfect amount to pat under both eyes. If I push too hard and get too much I’ll just use the excess on the driest sections of my face. I’m not going to waste a precious drop of this.

One push down is enough for both eyes

One push down is enough for both eyes

There are 6 powerful ingredients that make Multi-Active Repair stand out from the crowd. It is loaded with Peptides to prevent the breakdown of elastin as well as add major hydration to the eye area. 1) Commiphora Mukul Resin Extract (from an Indian tree well-known in Ayurvedic medicine) helps plump the skin from the inside. 2) Blackberry Leaf Extract inhibits the breakdown of collagen  3) Natural Sugar Beet Root Extract then promotes collagen production and adds moisturization. 4) Long term hydration is aided by a special blend of Soybean Lipid Extracts. 5) Natural Herbal Extracts improve luminosity as well as evens out skin texture and tone. 6) To help with undereye puffiness there’s caffeine in the formula. And as if that weren’t enough there are Color-Correcting Micro Pearls that minimize the appearance of dark circles.

KateCeuticals Multi-Active Repair Eye Cream

KateCeuticals Multi-Active Repair Eye Cream

This is an extremely smooth eye cream that works well both day and night. I like to put it on early in my skincare routine and find it doesn’t interfere with makeup. After it soaks in for a short time (less than a minute), my undereye area feels softer than ever and is ready for me to use a concealer. While this is an expensive product, I don’t believe in skimping on the skin under my eyes. I want to remain youthful looking for as long as possible and KateCeuticals Multi-Active Repair Eye Cream is a product that I want in to use in my fight against Father Time and Mother Nature.

Lisa’s eye cream:

Well, I must say Marcia, your eye cream sounds pretty terrific. However, I am head over heels in love with the eye cream sent for me to review by Kate Somerville, the Line Release™ Under Eye Repair Cream ($125). Yes, it’s pricey, but the bottle lasts forever and this is an eye cream that really does what it promises.

Kate Somerville Line Release

Kate Somerville Line Release Under Eye Repair Cream

The Kate Somerville Line Release™ Under Eye Repair Cream firms the under eye area, reduces puffiness, and brightens dark circles. It is moisturizing enough to soothe dry skin and not so heavy that it won’t work for very oily skin. It has a silicone base so it’s wonderful to use before applying makeup. The packaging is absolutely perfect, with an airless pump that also had a really cool see-through strip on the side so you can actually see how much product is left!

Love the packaging!

The eye cream’s texture is nice and light, so it soaks in quickly and doesn’t leave the under eye area tacky or sticky.

This elegant eye cream has no fragrance, which is a huge plus. The silicones leave skin super soft and the ingredients include tons of cell-communicating ingredients, antioxidants, and ceramides.

Kate Somerville says, “In a clinical test*, Line Release™ Under Eye Repair Cream instantly firmed, lifted, and smoothed the appearance of skin. This unbelievably lightweight formula diminishes the appearance of fine lines around the eyes, leaving you rejuvenated and refreshed.

  • Acetyl Hexapeptide-3 is intended to make the eyes appear lifted and more contoured.
  • Tripeptide reduces the visible depth of expression lines.
  • Matrixyl™ 3000 is formulated to significantly reduce the look of puffiness and dark circles.
  • Light Diffusing Pearls help minimize the look of dark circles and illuminate the entire eye area.
  • Vitamins A, C, and E provide a powerful Antioxidant boost to skin.
  • Soybean protein moisturizes skin.
  • Cucumber Extract conditions and soothes skin.

* Results based on an independent Clinical Study.”

Based upon my independent testing, I would have to agree.  This is a terrific eye cream.

Now that you’ve seen these two and read about our individual love for them, which would you choose? Believe us, there’s no wrong answer!

Dark circles begone with Teamine Eye Complex and Concealer

Teamine Eye Complex and Concealer

Teamine Eye Complex and Concealer

This aging stuff has got to stop. It can be a little depressing to see a new line in your face. Unless you partake in plastic surgery you need to take care of your skin and help slow down the signs of aging. The newest weapon in my arsenal comes courtesy of Revision Skincare and their Teamine Eye Complex and Teamine Concealer.

These are two separate items that work in tandem. Each work well alone but combined they are superpowers sort of like Batman and Robin. The eye complex is Batman and the concealer is Robin.

Teamine Eye Complex

Teamine Eye Complex

Teamine Eye Complex aka Batman

Teamine Eye Complex aka Batman

Batman, aka Teamine Eye Complex, is the work horse in this duo. It’s the more potent product and the one I’d pick if I could only have one. Revision Skincare realizes that there are many causes for dark circles so they’ve worked to address this problem in a variety of ways. Their goal is to visibly diminish dark under eye circles, smooth the appearance of fine lines under and around your eyes and to firm and brighten. That’s a lot to ask of one cream but then again this is Batman we are talking about.

Teamine Eye Complex

Teamine Eye Complex

Teamine Eye Complex contains natural minerals, mica, silica and titanium dioxide, to help immediately brighten the skin and diffuse light to minimize the look of fine lines. It’s a wonderful daytime eye cream. I always mix a little bit of eye cream with the concealer or corrector I’m going to use under my eyes so when I first started using the Eye Complex that what I did. I absolutely noticed a firmness and brightening. Teamine Eye Complex also contains green tea and THD ascorbate to help with anti-aging benefits.

Teamine Concealer

Teamine Concealer

Teamine Concealer

Teamine Concealer

Robin, aka Teamine Concealer, is great alone but works even better with his partner. Teamine Concealer isn’t a heavy duty concealer. It’s better to think of this as a treatment that works to reduce dark circles and fine lines since it only lightly conceals. It’s meant for long term use and not as a spot concealer. It contains anti-aging benefits with powerful antioxidants like Troxerutin, Brazilian Ginseng, South American Marapuama and White Lily Extract all to help reduce the appearance of dark circles. Other ingredients (green tea, co-q10, vitamin E, grape fruit extract and THD Ascorbate) provide the antioxidant benefits.

Teamine Concealer in Light

I use Teamine Concealer after I use the Eye Complex. I like to apply concealer in a V shape under my eyes and I do that with Teamine too. I’ll then go on to the rest of my routine. If I need more concealing I’ll try to use a concealer over my foundation and blend it carefully with my fingers. The warmth of fingers and as little manipulation as possible is what gives the most natural look.

Revision Skincare and Teamine products are sold at local medical spas and doctor’s offices. I put my zip code in the locator and found 16 locations that were available within a 25 mile radius of my home and three were actually extremely close by. My Batmobile would get me there in no time flat.
