Evanhealy for sensitive, problem skin

Every new decade in life brings different skin issues.  In my teens I battled blemishes and super oily skin.  My twenties brought less frequent acne, but the monthly breakouts were terrible.  My thirties brought fine lines, dry areas, and hyperpigmentation. And my forties?  They have brought me puffy eyes, wrinkles, uneven skin tone, sensitive skin…and blemishes yet again!  It’s not easy to find a skin care line that can successfully address all of those woes, but evanhealy makes the grade.

I learned about this line when Marcia first reviewed the Rose Face Care Kit here.  The creator of the line is Evan Healy, an aesthetician, who is extremely passionate about taking a holistic approach to skin care.  All of her products are organic and Vegan, and are based upon traditional plant lore, aromatherapy, homeopathy, and Ayurveda.  The motto of her line is “the skin breathes”.  Every single product is handmade in the U.S. in micro batches.  It’s just a beautiful line inside and out, and I find that many of her products are perfect for me depending on what my crazy mid-forties skin is doing at the moment.

I tried two of her Face Care Kits, which give you smaller sizes of products that last for up to two weeks of use.  It’s a great way to try an assortment of products for a small initial investment.  These kits are also absolutely perfect for travel.

The first kit I tried was the Blue Face Care Kit ($29.95).    This kit has five products that work for sensitive skin, with enough for at least 14 days of treatment.  (Mine actually lasted longer than that – I got at least 20 days out of my kit.)

The products in this kit are:

Blue Lavender Cleansing Milk (30 ml, 1 fl.oz)

This is a very gentle, creamy cleanser that doesn’t foam up.  It has white kaolin clay in it, which gets rid of dry skin cells, leaving your skin clear.  The rosehip seed oil helps to moisturize the skin, and it leaves your skin nice and soft.  It has a definite lavender scent, which may be a problem for those with fragrance issues.  It never irritated my skin, not even when my skin was being extremely difficult.

Lavender Facial Tonic Hydrosol (30 ml, 1 fl.oz)

This is a great, gentle toner that calms, soothes, and hydrates the skin.  It also smells of lavender but it’s softer than the cleanser, and the scent dissipates quickly.

Rosehip Treatment Facial Serum – Blue (4 ml, 0.13 fl.oz)

This serum has a light herbal scent that takes a while to dissipate.  The serum feels very silky, not oily at all, and it’s full of omega-3 and -6 essential fatty acids, as well as Vitamins A and C.  It smooths fine lines and wrinkles, and it helps to fade hyperpigmentation as well as scars.  I find it to be incredibly healing, particularly on fading blemishes.

Blue Chamomile Day Moisturizer (5 ml, 0.17 fl.oz)

This has a very light, barely noticeable herbal scent.  It’s a great moisturizer for blemished areas because it gives the hydration the skin needs without clogging the pores.  It really does calm red, irritated skin and leaves it feeling super soft.

Green Tea Clay (3 gm, 0.1 oz)

This little jar is full of dry Green Tea Clay that you mix with water to form a paste.  I love that it’s the dry ingredients, so there’s no worry that the mask will dry out in the jar before you can use it all.  This mask absorbs excess oil, draws blemishes and blackheads to the surface and gets rid of the bacteria causing the breakouts.  It also exfoliates the skin and calms red, irritated areas.  It’s a terrific mask that is particularly effective when you use it right after a facial steam bath.

The second kit I tried was the Blemish Face Care Kit ($33.95).  Even though this is billed for teens, I need it as my skin breaks out at least once a month, sometimes more often.  The five products in this box are supposed to last for seven to ten days of treatment, but like the Blue Kit, I got many more than ten days out of it.

The products in this kit are:

Tea Tree Gel Cleanser (30 ml, 1 fl.oz)

This is a pH balanced non-soap cleanser.  You only need a tiny bit, it makes a light foam that really deep cleans and helps disinfect the skin.  It has a very slight herbal scent that dissipates immediately.  When my skin is breaking out, I mix a little of this with the Green Tea Clay mask and some water for a terrific cleansing exfoliation.

Orange Blossom Facial Tonic Hydrosol OR Lavender Facial Tonic Hydrosol (30 ml, 1 fl.oz)

Due to limited season availability of the Orange Blossom Tonic, the Lavender Tonic may be substituted.  In my Face Kit, I got the Lavender Tonic, which is reviewed above.

Pomegranate Repair Serum (4 ml, 0.13 fl.oz)

This serum has a little heavier feel to it than the Rosehip Treatment Facial Serum reviewed above.  It’s pretty amazing stuff – somehow it manages to moisturize dry areas, yet also treat blemishes so they heal up quickly.  It leaves your skin silky smooth.  It’s full of anti-oxidents and is great for calming down inflamed, irritated skin.

Green Tea Clay (3 gm, 0.1 oz)  This is the same mask as the one in the Blue Face Care Kit, and is reviewed above.

Blemish Treatment Roll-On (5 ml, 0.17 fl.oz)

This is a great blemish treatment that is free of drying alcohol.  It disinfects blemishes without irritating and aggravating the skin.  It’s very gentle yet effective.

If you are looking for a skincare line, look into evanhealy. The fact that they have these try me kits makes it perfect to know what works for you without shelling out a lot of money. Both if these kits worked for me and the Rose Face Care Kit worked for Marcia so it’s thumbs up from the BIZ.– Lisa

Side by Side – Top Ten products for 2011

We recently enthralled you with our Top Ten products in the color department and today we’ll do the same but with products in other categories. These are all items we’ve reviewed in the first 6 months of 2011 and have fallen in love with. It’s always hard to narrow down lists like this since there are so many others that we can recommend but we beat our heads against the wall and this is what we came up with. They aren’t listed in any particular order.

1.  YBF Skincare – I love everything I’ve tried from the line but I’ve only reviewed Boost and Hydrate B Concentrate. Both make any other products I use work better so they had to be part of my top 10.
2.  Skin 2 Skin Care – the Photoaging Repair Cream has become a staple for me.  I am saying goodbye to hyperpigmentation with regular use of this fabulous, elegant product.

3.  Makeup for Ageless Beauty by Linda Mason – I learned so much from this wonderful book. It’s the perfect book for those of us 40 and above. Linda Mason uses older models and realistic makeup as well as helps us solve problems. Highly recommended.
4.  Argan Magic hair products – What a fabulous line and it’s so affordable. I adore all 3 of the products I’ve used and I hope you’ll not only go read about them in my review but buy them too. You’ll be just as thrilled as I am.
5.  Beautisol Self Tanner – I’m obsessed with self tanners and Beautisol is one of the absolute best products on the market. One of these days I’ll even convince the pale Marcia that she’ll be safe with Beautisol.
6.  Sweet Grass Farms – Where to begin? I can’t pick out a favorite so you’ll just have to believe me that everything I’ve tried from Sweet Grass Farms is wonderful.
7.  Artisan Naturals – This is another brand I can’t get enough of. I’ve used Artisan Naturals for several years and every product is amazing. Good for you and good for the environment.
8.  Tarte Celebutante – I call this the unsung hero of Tarte’s line because you never hear about it but you should. Reread my review to see why.
9.  Xen-Tan – This is the most clever self-tanner on the market. The dial makes for perfect color no matter what shade you’d like your tan to be.

10.  Whish Shave Savour Hair Inhibitor – It’s summer and I hate shaving. Whish to the rescue.

  1. Sirius Skincare machine – This wonderful, affordable skincare machine is perfect for cleansing, hydrating, exfoliating and just making my skin glow.
  2. Stages of Beauty – Stages of Beauty Grace Cream comes to bed with me every night. They’ve perfected a brand for each age group and I appreciate this greatly.
  3. DNA EGF sunscreen  – This is the sunscreen that I use most days, no fragrance, moisturizing and gentle on my skin. Plus it’s got all this science behind it!
  4. Aveeno sun tour – the Aveeno Sunscreen Cancer tour is the best thing I’ve ever done for myself this summer. I learned so much about skin cancer and I’m grateful that Aveeno is providing this free service.
  5. Evan Healy – it’s unusual that a skincare company sells a trial kit so that you don’t have to shell out big bucks to make sure that a line works for you. Evan Healy has 3 kits and I’ve tried the Rose kit. It’s a line that I highly recommend.
  6. Enzo Skin Pure Vitamin E Oil – By far my favorite skincare product of the year. I love my Pure Vitamin E Oil. You’d think with summer that an oil would be too rich for your skin but you’d be thinking wrong. I still get dry patches and I know that Enzo Skin works for me each and every time.
  7. Exuviance Age Reversal eye cream – Oh I love eye creams and I have a ton (just bought a few more too!!) Exuviance though has been the one I’ve been reaching for most nights. It’s not too rich and it’s not too light, it’s just right.
  8. Real Techniques brushes (Pixiwoo) – Love, love, love. These brushes are worth every penny (and that’s about all they cost). I am constantly using the face brushes especially. The quality is amazing.
  9. YBF Skincare Define and Quench  – Lisa and I agree wholeheartedly about the YBF brand. Absolutely everything I’ve tried is wonderful. For my top ten I’m picking Define and Quench for lips since both have helped me since I tend to ignore my lips when doing skincare. Whenever I use these YBF products I’m reminded of how great they are.
  10. Sebastian Color Ignite – Sebastian Color Ignite Shampoo and Conditioner are products I recommend over and over. Whenever I’m asked about my hair (and it’s pretty often actually) I mention these. They are easy to find, reasonably priced and make my hair beautiful. Thanks for rereading our top 10. These are the standouts among other standouts.

Evanhealy skincare – let your skin breathe

I first learned about evanhealy skincare through a blog subscriber. She has absolutely sworn by their products and encouraged me to try them. She has been using their Rose Face Care kit so when given a chance to try this for myself that’s what I chose too.

Evanhealy is an artisan-quality skin care treatment line created by aesthetician Evan Healy. Her holistic approach draws from traditional plantlore, aromatherapy, ayurveda, and homeopathy. Her motto is “skin breathes”. She believes that so much that it’s on the packaging of her products. She also believes that “less is more” therefore you won’t find a lot of superfluous products in her line. Reading her philosophy helps me understand the important balance there is between skin and our inner workings. In the words of the lovely lady that encouraged me to learn about this line:  ”Marcia, I’m not kidding when I say this stuff has changed my oily skin into normal in about a week.  It’s balanced it somehow and I look forward to coming home, taking off makeup and doing the EH routine.”  Those are strong words which I was eager to prove for myself.

Evanhealy sells seveal kinds of kits that are good for 7 to 10 days. There’s the Rose Face Kit (which I’m reviewing); the Blue Face Kit which is especially good for sensitive skin issues; the Blemish Face Kit and the Clay Mask kit. These range in price from $25.95 to $33.95. In addition they also sell a lot of their products as travel/trial sizes. While the Rose kit says it lasts 7 to 10 days I still have product left to continue using most of it. I’d love it if all companies were this consumer oriented. What a perfect way to know if a skincare line works for you!

The kit contains 5 products. I’ll explain each one and try not to wax poetic about them since you can learn about them directly from the source.

  1. Rose Cleansing Milk
  2. Rose Geranium Facial Tonic Hydrosol
  3. Rosehip Treatment Facial Serum (an oil)
  4. Rose Vetiver Day Moisturizer
  5. French Rose Clay (for a mask)

Using the recommendations of our subscriber I followed most of her suggestions: “Cleanse AM, then dry face, spray hydrosol on face and press fingers gently into skin, moisturize with rose vetivier.  PM: cleanse, hydrosol again, rose facial serum (love this and the hydrosols the best).  I usually spritz again after serum and to make sure everything is evenly distributed and with the oil, a little goes a long way. “ You’ll notice in what she writes and in what the kit holds, there’s not a night moisturizer. That’s because Evan Healy believes that nighttime is the best time for your skin to regenerate. You can use the moisturizer if you want but it isn’t really necessary.

The Rose Cleansing Milk is a very gentle cleanser; it’s wax free and cleanses skin thoroughly without drying it out. The ingredient list is amazing. Every ingredient in this cleanser (and all their products) is there for a specific reason that your skin requires. All the products I’ve tried are scented with the essential oils and natural ingredients they are created with. The Rose Cleansing Milk is the lightest fragrance of them all.

Rose Geranium Facial Tonic Hydrosol is as wonderful as I was told. This refreshing spray is also lightly scented and feels wonderful on my skin. Read what evanhealy has to say and you too will be convinced that you need this: Pure plant hydrosols are some of nature’s best antioxidants. They play an important role in protecting the skin from free radicals and pollution. Saturating the skin daily with these precious waters restores pH balance, promotes cell repair, refreshes and tones skin tissue, maintaining soft and smooth skin while significantly increasing vitality and hydration to all skin conditions.

After the Facial Tonic Hydrosol has dried down I then put on Rosehip Facial Serum. This is a light oil that doesn’t feel oily. As lovely as this is, it becomes even better when it’s combined with the Hydrosol. They work in tandem to help with hydration and suppleness. This is especially great if you have oily skin because with time it helps balance it and helps with problems like pimples and large pores.

During the day I follow with Rose Vetiver Moisturizer. I find that this is the most strongly fragranced of all the products. When I’ve used this entire regime I will notice the fragrance for about an hour but not consistently, it’s more on and off.  I’m extremely fragrance sensitive so others may not notice the fragrance the same way that I do. If I don’t find it bothersome then I’m sure others won’t either. The moisturizer is recommended for both oily and dry skin so it makes it ideal for someone like me that has an oily t-zone along with dry cheeks. I also follow this with a sunscreen.

The French Rose Clay Mask is used weekly. This was a little complicated the first time I used it but after one time it was second nature. First you gently steam your face over hot (but not too hot) water. Apply a little of the Rosehip Facial Serum onto your skin and then rub the powdered clay over that. I allow it to dry and then use cool water on a muslin cloth to remove it. There are more ways to use the mask than I did that you can learn about from evanhealy. The mask is a great way to exfoliate your face without any harshness. My skin felt refreshed and looking glowing both times I was able to use it.

My skin has been loving this routine. During my testing time I’ve gone through days in the hospital waiting room (big smile on my face), a religious ceremony that was so crowded I could barely move and a killer cold. My skin stayed blemish free throughout as well as looking great. I definitely understand the raves that I was told. To make this even better – evanhealy skincare is very reasonably priced. The prices of these range from $21.95 to $37.95. Try to find this kind of quality at a department store – I can assure you that you won’t. It’s wonderful to find a natural skincare company that puts this much expertise and love into their products and I am happy for the recommendation. – Marcia
