Diaper bags can make or break your fashion sense (and a diapers.com giveaway)

Parents holding baby feet

Once the thrill of learning you are pregnant is over; once the pain of morning sickness is over; once you decide whether you want to learn the baby’s gender then it’s time to go shopping. Whether it’s making a wishlist on Diapers. com or searching for your own diaper bag and getting it ready, you’ll want to pick out a bag that is your style and will accommodate your needs.

Picking out the perfect bag means you need to take a few things into consideration.

Are you the only one who will be carrying it? If so their purse like diaper bags would be quite stylish. It’s not a huge diaper bag at 12.8 x 5.5 x 13 inches but it’s big enough for all the essentials plus it’s got modern chic styling. There are pockets at the side for bottles and it’s fully lined with a spillproof lining. There are so many features to it and it looks like a purse.

Is your significant other going to share in the diaper bag toting? You don’t want anything too feminine if that’s the case. The McClaren Messenger Bag is one that my son wouldn’t mind hauling around. It’s 16.2 x 11.9 x 6.2 inches, 3.3 pounds and comes in three colors. Just the name McClaren would make it okay for him.

Is a backpack more your style? If you’ve got more than one child you can use a hands free bag for sure. And you can go fun or you can go for style. I happen to love the LeSportsac Utility Baby Backpack that comes with a matching changing pad. This one is fun to look at and is great no matter if you have a girl or boy. Plus you never know what that next child might be so keep that in mind.

It’s a good idea to include reading about diaper bags in your planning. You know you’re going to want to be reading books like What to Expect When Expecting. But there are also a lot of online articles that will help. Baby Gear Lab has one of my favorite articles on picking out the right bag and a great list of the items you’ll need. One of the things I learned from this article is why velcro is a no-no for a diaper bag. Who knew? When filling out your baby registry you want all the items you’d need to put in that diaper bag and Parents.com has a great one with items you might have missed. Since my son is the one that takes the kids to preschool/daycare he’s the one that needs to read The Bump’s article on best bags for dads. I love looking at Pinterest and this page on Diaper bags has great ideas, especially for the stylish kind.

Whatever your bag style, you’ll find it on Diapers. com. Creating a registry there will save your friends, family and colleagues a lot of time and effort and get you exactly what you want.  —  Marcia

Car seats cost a lot so maybe a gift card giveaway can help

baby-shower-gamesThe last time I went to a baby shower we were all oohing and aahing over the gifts. Everything for babies is too adorable so when we go shopping for something our instincts are to go with the cute. I didn’t go with the cute, I went with the gift I thought was the most important – an infant car seat. All new moms need to have the best of the best when it comes to a car seat, no matter the age of the child. My friends and I went through the baby register and thought about “ooh” but then reality set in and we went for safety.

Our choice was a Britax Car Seat. Why Britax? For the same reason that my two year old granddaughter has a Britax Roundabout G4.1 Convertible Car Seat in her parents’ and grandparent’s cars. Britax Car Seats are some of the best overall. After reading about car seats our decision was easy on what to buy. Review Lab rated the top 10 car seats this year and Britax ended up as 5 of the top 10. You can’t get better than that. Numbers 1, 2, and 3 were all Britax, as were numbers 6 and 8. These 5 models had the best consumer responses from 16,336 reports. Obviously not a small selection.

Diapers. com is the place to find all 3 categories of Britax strollers: Infant Car Seats, Convertible Car Seats, and Booster Car Seats.

Parents Central is one of many sites that explains what you should be looking for in a car seat: picking out the proper size, installation, registering it, and getting email notices from NHTSA about recalls. This vital information might be overlooked by 2nd or 3rd time parents but they shouldn’t be. Google your state to find out their requirements. I’m in Michigan and found a great article on this including where and when to get our car seats checked. Even if you’ve installed many car seats there are steps you can miss to make them the safest possible.

Moving from Skip Hop to Learning Resources as we grow

As the grandmother to two very precious children I’ve found my life revolves around them. They are in my thoughts day and night. They’ve opened up a new world of love for me. Things are so different than when my sons were their age. Computers weren’t around so shopping wasn’t as easy then, especially for a working parent, as it is now. From the day I started buying for my infant grandson and for the past 5 years I’ve used Diapers. com as one of my staple shopping sites. The convenience is amazing.

Skip Hop Zoo Little Kid's Zoo Backpack

Skip Hop Zoo Little Kid’s Zoo Backpack

Here’s our latest Skip Hop backpack for time at grandma and grandpa’s house. Unisex, big enough for diapers, sunscreen, changes of clothes for 2 children, snacks, and even room for water bottles. We totally wore out the owl Skip Hop Backpack so it’s nice to have a durable replacement.

Besides sticking with the huge, huge collection of Skip Hop we’re moving on with other brands from Diapers. com including Learning Resources. My granddaughter was a reluctant talker and as a former elementary educator I was getting worried. After reading many articles like this one on Child Development Guide I realized that what worked for her brother didn’t always work for her. I needed more games that fit into child development. I wanted to build her vocabulary as well as work on motor skills.

Since both of my munchkins are terrible eaters I looked into articles that might stimulate her food vocabulary and realized that playing tea party and having play picnics would introduce her to new foods in a non-threatening way.

She now knows the name of every piece of food in our set plus she’s pointing them out in the food aisles when we go shopping. She makes me laugh all the time with her combinations of food plus everything must be on a plate in her world and I’m required to use a knife, fork, or spoon or our meals wouldn’t be complete.diapers dot com candy landRight now we’re into games and Candy Land is the easiest to begin with. As soon as big brother goes to kindergarten she’ll get her own Minnie Mouse or princess version from diapers .com.

My next goal is working with matching and math with her. Her brother is a whiz at it but he stiffles her because “I can do it better”. The website Zero to Three has prepared me for what comes next. I hadn’t worked with patterning though we count all the time. Additionally I want to spend more time on her recognizing the numbers and letters.

The best job in the entire world is being a grandparent. As much as we love our kids it multiplies once you have new little ones in your life. At least for me, the stress of my job is gone so I can spend more of my time thinking about how to educationally work with them on new things while having fun. And the kisses and hugs (even when sticky) are worth all the money in the world.  —  Marcianate and talia cruise 2016
