Top 5 homemade skin care treatments with coconut oil

Nutiva collageSince I write about beauty for a living, I spend a lot of time researching skin care ingredients and how they affect the skin and body. I am also fascinated with ingredients that work from the inside out, like vitamins and foods that help create a strong body and a beautiful complexion.  I’ve started incorporating coconut oil into my diet in place of butter, shortening, and vegetable oil because it does three things:  1.  is easily processed by the liver into lots of energy; 2.  protects the body from infections, heart disease, and illness; and 3.  helps you lose weight.  Not only that, it tastes terrific.  So when Nutiva sent us their Coconut Oil (15 fl. oz $11.99), I was already happy – but not as happy as I became when I realized what a great ingredient it is for topical skin care.

Nutiva Coconut Oil – organic and sustainable

Coconut oil is solid at lower temperatures, and liquefies at temps above 76 degrees farenheit.  I find it’s best for skin care recipes when it is at that ‘almost about to melt’ stage.  I’ve tried tons of recipes for face masks, body scrubs, face cleansers, and hair treatments, and these are my top five favorites. Be sure to use organic and raw ingredients when you can!

1.  Coconut oil hand and body scrub

1 tablespoon coconut oil, 2 tablespoons honey, 1/4 cup sea salt, 1/4 cup sugar, 1 tablespoon lemon juice

Mix together and use this in the shower or just leave it next to the sink for a quick hand scrub.  It leaves hands super soft and moisturized.

2.  Moisturizing coconut oil facial mask

2 tablespoons coconut oil, 1 tablespoon honey, 1/2 mashed avocado

Mix together and apply immediately.  Leave it on for 20 – 30 minutes then rinse off.  This gives skin a great glow!

3.  Coconut oil facial cleanser

1 tablespoon coconut oil, 2 drops tea tree oil, 2 drops lavender oil – add some lemon juice if your skin is oily or prone to blackheads

This mixture dissolves even the most tenacious makeup and leaves skin hydrated.  Be sure to avoid the eye area – use straight coconut oil to remove eye makeup.  It’s the best.

4.  Coconut oil foot scrub

3 tablespoons coconut oil, 1 tablespoon brown sugar.

After scrubbing and rinsing off this scrub, apply straight coconut oil to feet then cover with socks – in the morning your feet will be amazingly soft.

5.  Coconut oil hair mask

1 tablespoon coconut oil, 1 tablespoon honey – double the recipe for long hair.  Heat the mixture up on the stove for a great hot oil treatment.  Apply to dry hair from roots to ends, cover with a shower cap and let soak in for a half hour.  Then, shampoo and condition like normal and you will be astounded at how soft and shiny your hair has become.

Nutiva Coconut Oil

Nutiva Coconut Oil

Coconut oil by itself makes a great eye cream, lip moisturizer, and makeup remover!  I particularly like Nutiva Coconut Oil because it is:

  • Organic
  • Non-GMO
  • Virgin
  • Non-hydrogenated
  • No cholesterol
  • Made from fresh coconuts

Give homemade skin care treatments a try.  It’s a lot of fun, and the results are fabulous.  With the holidays coming up, homemade skin care treatments in cute little jars make great gifts (except for the one with avocado – that has to be used immediately).  Believe me, coconut oil is going to become your best friend, both in recipes for food and in recipes for skin care.  - Lisa

Belli Anti-Blemish Basics

If you’ve heard of the brand Belli then you know that it’s a brand that began its life as a safe brand for pregnant women. Considering I’m in menopause it sure doesn’t seem like it would be an appropriate brand for me but guess what – it’s very fitting for me and for you. When Belli offered to send a few products the timing was perfect because I was going through my summer breakout time. I said yes and learned a lot about these products. I have two products from Belli, Anti-Blemish Facial Wash and Fresh Start Pre-Treatment Scrub.

Belli Anti-Blemish Facial Wash and Fresh Start Pre/Treatment Scrub

Belli Anti-Blemish Facial Wash and Fresh Start Pre-Treatment Scrub

Belli wants women to start with them when they are planning pregnancy, are pregnant and to keep with them beyond pregnancy. No matter what age women are, our hormones can go wacky. Even my elderly mother has an occasional breakout.

Their motto tells it all: Picky for a Purpose. We want to take care of ourselves all the time but during your pregnancy or if you are nursing you need to watch what you use so much more.belli slogan
The Anti-Blemish Facial Wash ($22/6.5 oz) is what I really needed the most for the breakouts I was having. My skin doesn’t love hot humid weather. It seemed like every few days there was another little bump that wanted to skew the results of other skincare I was using. I have used this in the evenings when I had a flare up and it helped calm any redness I was having. It’s a clear wash without fragrance. My skin is drier now than it used to be so I need to be careful that a cleanser isn’t going to strip it. The Belli is doing a nice job of keeping my skin clean but not dry. I follow with a Reviva Lab Serum and later moisturizer and my breakouts are basically gone. (I need to keep my hands off the one that I’ve irritated though!!)
Here’s some information from Belli:
• Features lactic acid to cleanse and gently exfoliate acne prone skin
• FREE OF salicylic acid, glycolic acid, and benzoyl peroxide– common acne fighting ingredients that should be avoided during pregnancy
• Contains lemon peel oil, a natural anti-bacterial and skin brightener
• With green tea extract and cucumber, both are rich in antioxidants

The Anti-Blemish Facial Wash won’t be my personal daily cleanser but it will live on my bathroom counter so that when the zits decide to come out and party, I’ll be ready for them.
.
The other product I’ve used from Belli is actually a Prep product so I should have mentioned it first. Oops. Fresh Start Pre-Treatment Scrub ($24, 6.5 oz) is a scrub like a dermabrasion scrub that can be used on your face and body. It surprises me how many women don’t know about a scrub like this. I was telling a friend about a scrub I had reviewed and she didn’t know one thing about them. A scrub like this keeps your pores cleansed, gets rid of dead skin and helps prepare your skin for other treatments. Here’s what Belli has to tell us about their Fresh Start Pre-Treatment Scrub:
• Features green tea extract and ginseng, both are rich in antioxidants
• Helps prepare skin for the application of other Belli products
• Includes the refreshing aromatherapy of peppermint oil

Belli Fresh Start Pre-Treatment Scrub

This is a great scrub to use 2 to 3 times a week. I have quite a few scrubs so I interchange but I did use this one exclusively for a few weeks while testing Belli for review. I used it twice a week and found it gentle on my skin. It’s nice to take it in the shower, get the refreshment of the peppermint oil and at the same time work on my face and body. The Anti-Blemish Facial Wash is a great follow up.

You can find these products at many retailers and etailers. It’s carried at the BuyBuy Baby that’s right near my house so I can even use one of the $5 coupons they send me all the time. It’s also available at drugstore.com, Ulta.com, and many maternity sites.

As you can see, this is an ageless company. I’m happy to have what helps me rather than care that it’s a brand created for a woman in her child bearing years. These are products I’ll continue to use and recommend to my loved ones. — Marcia

Hada Labo Tokyo’s summer gems

Hada Labo makes me happy but sad. I previously reviewed two products from Hada Labo Tokyo, Anti-Aging Hydrator and Skin Plumping Gel, and both are absolutely fab. I’ve already repurchased the Anti-Aging Hydrator since it’s made a big difference in the hydration of my skin. Today I’m going to review two more of their amazing products that were sent to Beauty Info Zone to test. So why is it that I love the products but they make me sad? Hada Labo Tokyo only makes 5 products…. that’s it. They need to expand their line so I can get in line to buy them.

Hada Labo Tokyo is the first Japanese company to bring mass market products to the US. It’s sold at Ulta, Ulta.com and drugstore.com but I’ve also found it at Walgreens. One day I went to Walgreen and stopped dead in my tracks in the doorway blocking everyone since there were banners for Hada Labo. I was so excited that I rushed to the skincare section to see for myself.

Two products you should look for if you are at either of these stores or sites are Hada Labo Tokyo Protecting Day Lotion SPF 18 ($17.99) and Hada Labo Tokyo Hydrating Facial Cleanser ($11.99). They come with the “Marcia of Beauty Info Zone” stamp of approval.

Hada Labo Tokyo Hydrating Facial Cleanser

Hada Labo Tokyo Hydrating Facial Cleanser

The Hydrating Facial Cleanser is especially wonderful for my skin since it contains hyaluronic acid. Now I’m fully aware that you are washing this away but I still love the fact that it includes this great ingredient. This is a foaming cleanser that starts off as a cream.

Hada Labo Tokyo Hydrating Facial Cleanser

Hada Labo Tokyo Hydrating Facial Cleanser

I’m not sure if you can see just how rich and creamy it is. Many times a foaming cleanser is loose and doesn’t help with hydration but that’s not the case with this Hydrating Facial Cleanser. You can feel it moisturizing while cleansing at the same time. It’s a deep cleanser that cuts through the grime of the day while working to clean away any impurities.

Hada Labo Tokyo Hydrating Facial Cleanser

Hada Labo Tokyo Hydrating Facial Cleanser

Lately I’ve been keeping this in the shower since the plastic tube won’t break if it falls.

Key Ingredients:

  • Hyaluronic Acid PLUS: Powerful hydrator, merges with skin providing 2 times more hydration than regular HA to effectively restore skin’s natural hydrating levels.
  • Hyaloveil-P: Adhesive Hyaluronic Acid designed to adhere to skin, keeping it moist even after rinsing. Finishes the skin with fresh feeling.
  • Safe and gentle cleansers derived from natural amino acids.
Hada Labo Tokyo

Hada Labo Tokyo

Both the Hydrating Cleanser and Protecting Day Lotion SPF18 contain what Hada Labo Tokyo calls Super Hyaluronic Acid (or Hyaluronic Acid Plus). As you can see by my blurry picture, super hyaluronic acid is an excellent hydrator and skin plumper. If it’s going to make my skin retain any youthful qualities, then I want it in buckets!

Hada Labo Tokyo Protecting Day Lotion is the other product I’m using. I love that this has no fragrance and is oil free. My skin totally changes in hot weather. I’m sure I’m not alone when I say that my dry skin becomes an oily mess. I don’t always see the oil but I can feel it oozing inside me! I don’t break out often but in the summer I easily can. The fact that this moisturizer is oil free is a biggie for me. It’s non-comedogenic with a lightweight feel to it.

Hada Labo Protecting Day Lotion

Hada Labo Protecting Day Lotion

The only negative is that it has an SPF of 18. While it’s broad spectrum which is appreciated, I really wish it were a higher SPF. I’ve been wearing it on days that I wear a foundation or BB/CC Cream that has a higher number in sunscreen protection. I don’t spend a lot of time outside but I know that the sun can get to me anywhere I am.

Hada Labo Protecting Day Lotion

Hada Labo Protecting Day Lotion

This is one of the most comfortable moisturizers with sunscreen that I have which is why I reach for it so often. Plus with the Super Hyaluronic Acid addition I know my skin is being protected.

These products from Hada Labo Tokyo are ones I will keep in my rotation, even when I have more expensive ones around. I think it’s a great line in general and it’s one I’d really recommend to someone just starting out with quality skincare. Not only is it affordable but it has ingredients that help with premature aging. Plus it’s free from fragrance, parabens, dyes and mineral oils. Why not start off right and not have to correct your mistakes??

Have you become an afficionado of Hada Labo Tokyo? If not I think the time has come for you to start! — Marcia

The Skin Perfecter: three minutes, three times a week for perfect skin

Every so often, a cosmetic device comes along that really and truly changes my life. The Beauty Blender changed the way I wear my foundation.

beauty blenderThe Verge Bubble and Ribbon Wands changed the way I wear my hair.

Verge Bubble Wand

Verge Bubble Wand

And now the Skin Perfecter, sent to us to test by Le Mieux, has changed the way I cleanse my face.

Le Mieux Skin Perfecter

The Skin Perfecter ($225) is a facial wand that cleanses the face, exfoliates dead skin cells, extracts clogged pores, and infuses the skin with serums and creams. Plus, it also give a great facial massage! This little wand is a total powerhouse that delivers real results.  It is being launched on July 22nd on QVC, so take a look and decide if you want to budget for it – it really is worth the investment.

The Skin Perfecter is unlike any cleansing device I have ever used. It is described as, ““An ultrasonic, handheld device that goes beyond ordinary cleansing by deeply flushing pores of excess oil, makeup residue, and cellular impurities using high frequency vibrations. Deep exfoliation decongests pores to combat acne and blemishes and allows better absorption of products for heightened results.”

The Skin Perfecter

The Skin Perfecter

The Skin Perfecter has a thin blade called a spatula that cleanses, infuses, or massages, depending on how you use it. It is completely different from the other brush-head sonic devices that I’ve used. Three uses a week is all that is needed for major results. Here are the steps:

1.  Dampen face and neck with water.

2.  Turn the Skin Perfecter on and hit the Mode button until the word ‘HI’ is green. With the spatula angled downward, glide it out and up over the face, nose, and neck.

That’s all you need to do to cleanse, exfoliate, and extract. It feels sort of odd…the 28,000 ultrasonic vibrations per second create a definite sensation that is difficult to describe. It’s not unpleasant, and it doesn’t hurt in the least…but it feels strange. These vibrations strengthen the skin tissue, and at the same time the spatula actually helps extract dirt, dead skin cells, blackheads and whiteheads. It is really, really cool.

After cleansing and extracting, just flip the spatula over and use the other side – the flat side – to apply serum or skin cream.

1.  Apply serum/cream with fingertips.

2.  Turn the Skin Perfecter on and hit the Mode button 3x until both ‘HI’ and ‘Pulse’ are green. With the spatula flat against the skin, glide the Skin Perfecter out and up over the face, nose, and neck.

This perfectly applies skin care and greatly increases the efficacy of the products. It allows skin care to work at the highest level possible. All those fantastic ingredients can really penetrate perfectly cleansed skin and the ultrasonic vibrations truly infuse skin with all the good stuff.

To relax and help strengthen the skin even more, use the same technique without serum for a facial massage.

There is a GREAT video that shows exactly how to use the Skin Perfecter right HERE.

The Skin Perfecter really couldn’t be easier to use. It’s the perfect size and design to fit right into your hand. It really only takes a few minutes to treat your entire face and neck. And it has a rechargeable battery plus a low battery signal.

The Skin Perfecter delivers big results. Here are some findings from a clinical study:

1.     In a clinical study 100% of participants saw an improvement in skin exfoliation in two weeks.

2.     In a clinical study 85% of participants saw an improvement in overall skin appearance in two weeks.

3.     In a clinical study 80% of participants saw immediate improvement in brightness in two weeks.

4.     In a clinical study 69% of participants saw immediate improvement in radiance & luminosity in two weeks.

5.     In a clinical study 69% of participants saw immediate radiance and healthier look to their skin due to micro massage that encourages microcirculation

6.     In a clinical study 65% of participants saw an improvement of the appearance of pores in two weeks.

7.     In a clinical study 62% of participants saw immediate improvement in the appearance of skin texture & smoothness in two weeks.

8.     In a clinical study 50% of participants saw an improvement in fine lines & wrinkles in two weeks.

9.     In a clinical study the use of the Skin Perfecter improves absorption of serum compared to using ones hands.

Those are great results…and I would say that my own personal results from two months of use have been even more impressive.

The Skin Perfecter goes on sale on QVC on July 22nd. I hope you will consider buying one of these.  I haven’t been this excited about a skin care tool in a very long time and I just can’t recommend it highly enough. Be sure to check out the video about how to use the Skin Perfecter here:

Put some space on your face with Kiehls

Check out this really cool social media contest – Kiehl’s ‘Put Some Space On Your Face’ gives you (well, actually your face!) an opportunity to travel with them to space.  The giveaway is in celebration of the new Kiehl’s Oil Eliminator line.  They sent its ‘hero’ product (24-Hour Anti-Shine Moisturizer For Men) into space. For real. The product was on a custom rig that was sent 20 miles above the surface of the earth.

Kiehls SpaceFace

You can see the video at www.kiehlsinspace.com and can also enter the giveaway there.  Just take a photo of yourself in mid-air then hashtag it #SpaceFace.  Random winners will win their face a trip to space via a 3D custom astronaut figurine with their face on it.  That figurine is attached to a shuttle and sent into the stratosphere.  After the figurines land, the winners are sent their personalized, space traveling action figures.

What is this new line that has inspired the space travel?  The OIL ELIMINATOR FOR MEN, brand new this month.  There are three products that tackle men’s oily skin, mattifying and reducing the appearance of pores.

Kiehls Oil Eliminator

So why the space travel?  It’s all in the ingredients.

Oil Eliminator uses Aerolite, an advanced material based on the science of aerogel, which has been used in space exploration (for example, as an insulating material on Mars Exploration Rover in 1997). Aerolite is the lightest solid material on Earth because it is composed of up to 99.98% air by volume, helping to provide a weightless feel on the skin. The substance is likened to a gel from which the liquid portion has been removed without causing the material to shrink in size or collapse. Due to its highly porous structure and large surface area, it is able to absorb FOUR TIMES its own weight in oil, providing efficient sebum absorption capabilities. Oil Eliminator 24-hour Anti-Shine Moisturizer, with Aerolite technology, helps reduce pore visibility and imperfections.

In general, men have different skin issues than women.  A man has more sebum-producing sebaceous glands, so they have more oil production and larger pores.  Plus they sweat more, which means every more shine and oily residue on their faces.  Kiehl’s three new products containing Aerolite address these concerns.

close up of the Deep Cleansing

close up of the Deep Cleansing Exfoliating Face Wash

The Deep Cleansing Exfoliating Face Wash ($20) is a soap-free and sulfate-free cleanser.  It has crushed Apricot Seeds to help exfoliate, which also decreases the appearance of pores.  It doesn’t dry out the skin, and it does a terrific job of smoothing skin texture and getting rid of shine.

The Refreshing Shine Control Toner ($20) is a cooling spray that tones and also decreases the appearance of sweat and oil.  The Capryloyl Glycine dries up the bad stuff, but doesn’t dry out skin.

Moisuturizer swatch

24-Hour Anti-Shine Moisuturizer swatch

The 24-Hour Anti-Shine Moisturizer for Men ($27) is a lightweight moisturizer with Aerolite to absorb oil and sweat.  The result is a shine-free appearance and soft, hydrated skin. It also has Totara Wood Extract to diminish the appearance of pores.

My 21-year-old son, who has sensitive, oily, breakout prone skin, thinks this line is the bomb.  He gets the best results using the Deep Cleansing Exfoliating Face Wash in the shower, then toning with the Refreshing Shine Control Toner, and following with the 24-Hour Anti-Shine Moisturizer for Men.

This is a terrific line for men so be sure to take a look.  And don’t forget to put some space on your face!  Snap that photo then hashtag it #SpaceFace on Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook.  - Lisa

Juicy cleansing with Derma MD Enzyme Cleanser with Pineapple and Papaya

Enzyme Cleanser with Pineapple and Papaya

Enzyme Cleanser with Pineapple and Papaya

Early this month I gave a quick review of several Derma MD products that were sent for review. At the time they were being offered for the first time on Hautelook. Derma MD wanted to alert people to this fact and I was the lucky recipient of products to review. I’m loving all of the skincare that they sent me and will be reviewing more soon.

I like to test products for a minimum of 30 days before reviewing them. While I haven’t used this cleanser for that full amount of time, I’ve used it every night for almost 3 weeks. Derma MD Enzyme Cleanser with Pineapple and Papaya ($34.95) has become a favorite that I actually enjoy using. It’s not often that I can say a cleanser is fun but this one actually is.

Derma MD Enzyme Cleanser (from website)

Derma MD Enzyme Cleanser (from website)

Here’s what I like so much about Derma MD Enzyme Cleanser with Pineapple and Papaya:

1. The texture of the Enzyme Cleanser is different than any others I own. I think this is what makes it fun. It’s jelly-like and slurpy. When I squeeze the plastic bottle to remove the cleanser some of it slurps back in.

2. The feel of the cleanser is cool. It feels refreshing when applied.

3. This foams up nicely but not with the feeling that it’s stripping my skin. I can feel the cleansing in action yet it’s lightly moisturizing at the same time.

4. I don’t need a toner after using this since it cleanses thoroughly.

5. It has the most delicious fragrance and this comes from a fragrance-phobe. The first time I used it I was worried about how the smell would affect me but now I look forward to this sweet pineapple aroma that’s just a tiny bit tart at the same time.

6. The cleanser contains very gentle enzymes of pineapple and papaya which are helpful for removing dead skin cells so that your skin is soft, hydrated and fresh feeling.

7. It feels like I’m getting some deep pore cleansing with this Derma MD cleanser. I have large pores that I hate and I want to know they are being properly cleansed. Since enzymes are known to destroy dead skin cells and pores are often filled with those cells, I am comfortable knowing that my pores are being taken care of properly.

8. The key ingredients are Pineapple & Papaya Enzyme, Aloe Vera Extract, Wheat Protein Amino Acid, Dex-Panthenol, Avocado Oil.

9. Did I mention the amazing sweet yet tart pineapple smell?

While the price of Derma MD Enzymatic Cleanser is on the high side I feel that it’s worth it. I don’t know if it will come back to Hautelook or not but if it does jump on that opportunity. And if it doesn’t, then sign up for 10% off the Derma MD website and indulge yourself with a great cleanser. — Marcia
