8 beauty items you need to toss now! Spring Clean Refresh with Meijer Beauty

*sponsored post*

Spring CleaningTime to toss! I am gearing up for some spring cleaning and first on my list is my vanity. Clearing out feels so good…I love it when things are organized and sparkling clean. Besides, extra space means room for new things!
Does your cosmetics stash look like this??

Does your cosmetics stash look like this??

Spring cleaning isn’t just for closets and pantries – it is so important to also tackle that beauty stash. Time goes by fast and before your know it you have beauty items that are years old. Anything you use with your hands or put on your face eventually gathers bacteria and can cause breakouts and other skin issues. Items with active ingredients become inactive over time, becoming an exercise in futility. Besides, it’s fun to go through and edit your cosmetics and skin care, plus what a great opportunity to go shopping to replenish!
If you are like me, the memory fades, so when you purchase a new item mark the date on the bottom of the jar with a black sharpie. It makes spring cleaning much easier. Also, most skin care items have an open jar symbol followed by a number and the letter ‘M’.  This tells you how many months you can use the product after opening it – so 6M means six months after opening, 9M means nine months after opening, etcetera. Don’t forget, when using products packaged in jars NEVER stick your fingers in the jar. Use a small cosmetics spatula to spoon out the product so you aren’t introducing bacteria into the jar.
Here are the top 8 items that you need to toss, along with some suggestions for replacements. Meijer just announced an exciting lineup of new beauty items, so it’s a great place to shop to renew that beauty routine and you can find all of my suggestions there.
L'Oreal Revitalift Volume Filler Serum

L’Oreal Revitalift Volume Filler Serum

1.  Serum:  I am sure this is no surprise. Typically serum is in air tight packaging, which keeps ingredient integrity, but once you start using a serum it’s only good for about six months. Toss it even earlier if the texture changes or it starts to smell weird. If you need to replenish, check out L’Oreal Revitalift Volume Filler.  It is wonderfully affordable and has hyaluronic acid to plump skin and smooth out fine lines and wrinkles.

L'Oreal Infallible Pro-Matte Powder Foundation

L’Oreal Infallible Pro-Matte Powder Foundation

2.  Foundation:  obviously, liquid foundation is a bacteria collector, especially jar-based foundation that is exposed to the air. But did you know that powder foundation also goes bad? Think about it…you dip your brush into the foundation, the brush goes on your skin, then you dip that brush back onto the foundation…all those skin oils are transferred into the powder, which means after a while it becomes pretty dirty. Toss that old stuff and try something new, like L’Oreal Infallible Pro-Matte Powder Foundation.  This is opaque enough to use as foundation, and it also works great as a pressed powder to cancel out a shiny nose.

Maybelline Lash Sensational Mascara and Cover Girl Full Lash Bloom

Maybelline Lash Sensational Mascara and Cover Girl Full Lash Bloom

3.  Mascara:  this is a must-toss every season! After a while, mascara dries out and loses its lash lengthening and thickening power. Plus, any product that isn’t a solid is in danger of collecting bacteria. Glam out with your mascara and then replace it as soon as it shows any sign of dryness or starts to smell ‘off’, typically at about three months. By the way, resist ‘pumping’ your mascara – it makes it dry out even more quickly, and always toss your mascaras if you have an eye infection. Two mascaras to try for long, lush lashes are Maybelline Lash Sensational Mascara and Cover Girl Full Lash Bloom.

L'Oreal Revitalift Volume Filler Moisturizer

L’Oreal Revitalift Volume Filler Moisturizer

4.  Moisturizer:  jar moisturizer lasts at the most 6 months. Go through all those open jars you know you have sitting on your shelves and toss anything you opened last fall. Not only do they become a potential hazard for your skin because of bacteria, but the active ingredients stop working so why bother? Try something new, like L’Oreal Revitalift Volume Filler Moisturizer to smooth out those lines and wrinkles.

Degree Dryspray Deodorant

Degree Dry Spray Deodorant

5.  Deodorant:  yes, deodorant does have a shelf life! While most have expiration dates, a good rule of thumb is two years. It’s a great idea to stock up on deodorant when it is on sale, but be sure to write your purchase date on the extras if they don’t have an expiration date. A great replacement is Degree Dry Spray. It sprays on dry and protects for up to 48 hours, so no worries on those hectic late mornings!

Neutrogena Cooldry Sport Sunscreen

Neutrogena Cooldry Sport Sunscreen

6.  Sunscreen:  sunscreen loses its effectiveness over time and you sure don’t want to get a sunburn thanks to an outdated bottle. Most have an expiration date, but the longest any sunscreen will last is three years. My absolute favorite and a great one for restocking is Neutrogena Cooldry Sport.  I can even get my kids to put this on without a fight.

Cover Girl Lip Lava

Cover Girl Lip Lava

7.  Lip gloss:  a liquid product you apply to your lips?  Of course lip gloss is one of the biggest offenders when it comes to beauty items that go bad and need to be replaced regularly. Replace your old lip glosses with Cover Girl Lip Lava. I adore this lip gloss!  My favorite shade is Lava-Rider. I put it on then blot and I have a beautiful shimmery stain that lasts and lasts.

Neutrogena Healthy Skin Boosters Facial Cleanser

Neutrogena Healthy Skin Boosters Facial Cleanser

8.  Face cleanser:  these only last a year, so often a big bottle will expire before it’s gone. If your face cleanser isn’t working well, the consequences will definitely be evident to everyone! A great option for replacing your old stuff is Neutrogena Healthy Skin Boosters Facial Cleanser. White tea and vitamin E ensure clean skin without any dryness.

Embrace spring cleaning and refresh that beauty stash! Be sure to go to Meijer Beauty to check out their new lineup of cosmetic and skin care items and restock for a beautiful YOU.  – Lisa

Don't Call Me Ma'am products

Don’t Call Me Ma’am products

When DON’T CALL ME MA’AM emailed us about their products and offered a giveaway to one of our readers we were totally enticed. The name alone was enough to make me curious, the great packaging added another level and the fact that we could offer a set to one of you sealed the deal. I agreed to test out their products for all those reasons.

Don't Call Me Ma'am skincare trio

Don’t Call Me Ma’am skincare trio

DON’T CALL ME MA’AM is a reasonably priced skincare line that has excellent ingredients. We were sent three products to test out.  I’ve enjoyed using these and I love the packaging. It’s fun and gives me something to read in the bathroom – seriously. I enjoy looking at the sayings on each of the products and seem to discover new ones constantly.

Don't Call Me Ma'am sayings

Don’t Call Me Ma’am sayings

“Every day is 24 hours of opportunity”  “There are mountains to climb, people to meet, days to concur” “Age does not define how I look or feel” and “I am Beauty with a capital B” are just examples of the sayings on the packaging. Bright, cheerful and motivational products with easy to use tubes.

WASH IT AWAY is Don’t Call Me Ma’am’s cleanser. This tube of cleanser is refreshing and doesn’t make my skin feel tight after using it. It takes off eye makeup too without stinging my eyes. I find that unusual so that’s a definite plus. Not all mascara will come off with it (fiber ones or really thick mascara) but most of the ones I’ve been using lately, like Votre Vu’s Eiffel Tower, come off with ease. This is a cleanser that can be used by the whole family – they don’t have to be a “ma’am”. It’s fragrance free and has some essential ingredients like DCMM Botanical Extracts blend, Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower) Seed Oil and Persea Gratissima (Avocado) Oil. ($25)

Don't Call Me Ma'am WASH IT AWAY

Don’t Call Me Ma’am WASH IT AWAY

IN BALANCE EVERYDAY TONER comes next. This comes in a 6 oz spray bottle.  At first I wondered if I’d be comfortable spraying it but I actually enjoy it that way. I have used a cotton pad but it’s more efficient to just spray it on and let it dry. It’s a very calming toner and works to rebalance your skin’s pH balance as well as calm any inflammation. The essential ingredients in this are DCMM Botanical Blend and Allantoin (Skin conditioning agent). This too is fragrance free (that makes me so happy). ($25)

FACE LOVE is their moisturizer. There is no SPF so I’ve been using it at night even though the website says to use it in the morning. (I’m such a rebel!) This doesn’t have a heavy feel to it yet it is quite moisturizing and makes my skin feel very soft. They say “This naturally hydrating formula binds moisture to the skin and promotes soft and supple tissue. “ The essential ingredients are DCMM Botanical Blend, Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower) Oil, Jojoba Oil, Aloe Barbedensis (Aloe Vera) Extract, Tocopherol (natural Vitamin E), Panthenol. ($35, 4 oz)

Don't Call Me Ma'am FACE LOVE

Don’t Call Me Ma’am FACE LOVE

DON’T CALL ME MA’AM is Never tested on Animals and is free of harsh Chemicals, Parabens, Sulfates And Fragrances.

There are so many reasons to like this line because of the ingredients and also because of what it lacks which is just as important. Cruelty free products that will keep your skin in great shape and keep your mind busy and amused.

Introducing Orico Streetwise Cleansers

Orico is a new brand for us at Beauty Info Zone. It’s a British brand that has become award winning for designing skincare that helps with the demands of the environment on our skin. Without realizing it everything we encounter (pollution, air-conditioning, heat and stress) all dry out our skin removing the freshness from it.

Orico is all of these!

Orico is all of these!

We were sent two different cleansers to try out, both from their Streetwise collection. Lisa will be reviewing Gentle Antioxidant Organic Face Wash while Marcia will tell you about Hydrating Make-Up Remover Face and Eyes. These cleansers are pure and organic. As Orico says “Each formula is a unique and synergistic blend of natural active ingredients and essential oils to protect and rejuvenate the complexion and give a lift to the senses.”  When we read about Orico it felt like a brand that our readers would be interested in.

MARCIA’S SIDE:  Hydrating Make-Up Remover Face and Eyes

Orico Streetwise Hydrating Make-Up Remover

Orico Streetwise Hydrating Make-Up Remover

What appealed to me about ORICO Streetwise’s Make-Up Remover ($27)is that it could be used for eyes as well as the face. I have a lot of cleansers that aren’t comfortable for me to use to remove eye makeup so I wanted to try something to use that would take off everything with one product.

This Make-Up Remover comes close although it’s not perfect. A lot depends on the mascara that I’m wearing. If I’m wearing a lot of mascara or a heavy one then I need to remove that separately. If I’m wearing just a daily coat then I reach for Orico Streetwise.

It was created to work for all skintypes even dry and sensitive skin so I knew that was a plus. Plus I love the ingredient list and that the company is cruelty-free and Natural and Organic Cosmetic certified by Ecocert Greenlife according to Ecocert standards.

Orico Natural Ingredients

Orico Natural Ingredients

I personally love the fragrance of this. I’ve become addicted to citrus aromas lately in my products so it’s a pleasure to find a makeup remover that has such a pleasant smell as well as one that works well. It removes my makeup easily without leaving any dry areas behind. My eyes aren’t the least bit irritated by this, it never stings. It removes all but the toughest mascara or eyeliner with ease. This is hydrating as its name implies and it’s packed with powerful antioxidants and essential oils to soothe and clear skin of impurities. The fragrance I enjoy so much is an aromatherapy blend of tangerine and orange essential oils added to de-congest and increase circulation.

LISA’S SIDE – Gentle Antioxidant Organic Face Wash

I usually love gel facial cleansers because they work really well with my Foreo Luna Sonic Cleansing Brush.  Orico’s Gentle Antioxidant Organic Face Wash is a perfect partner for sonic cleansers, and it’s excellent on its own.

Orico Streetwise Face WashI find that while it’s quite gentle, it also removes makeup like a champ.  It has lots of antioxidants that seem to just melt away dirt and calm skin at the same time.  This cleanser also has Gingko Biloba, which is an anti-bacterial that keeps blemishes at bay.  The fragrance is a light, clean citrus that is very pleasant.

For a real treat, Orico recommends double cleansing.  First, wash with the Streetwise Hydrating Make-up Remover to dissolve face makeup, then cleanse with the Streetwise Gentle Antioxidant Face Wash for a deeper cleanse and to guard against breakouts.  Both of these products make for a great introduction to this British brand!

A line for healthy, active, balanced women: Lady Soma Skin Care

There’s a whole lot more to great skin than slapping on some moisturizer now and then.  I am always excited when I discover a skin care line that take a more holistic approach to skin care, and Lady Soma is a great example.  Lady Soma says their line is a comprehensive collection for healthy, active and balanced women.  They are all about truth is labeling and ingredient safety, and the care and pride put into their products is impossible to miss.

Lady Soma Skin Care

Lady Soma Skin Care

Lady Soma (the word ‘soma’ is Greek for ‘body’) sent us a few products to test, and today I have reviews of the Somaluxe Face Cleanser and the Antioxidant Berry Masque.

Somaluxe Face Cleanser

Somaluxe Face Cleanser

Somaluxe Face Cleanser

Somaluxe Face Cleanser

The Somaluxe Face Cleanser (8 oz, normally $24 on sale for $16) is a gel cleanser that not only melts away dirt and makeup, it also treats the skin with antioxidants.  Great ingredients include vitamin C, tea tree oil, and aloe vera.  This is a terrific gentle cleanser that keeps on treating skin even after it is rinsed off.  Skin is kept moist with aloe vera, and hyaluronic acid and amino acids help to ensure a great complexion.

Lady Soma Antioxidant Berry Masque

Antioxidant Berry Masque

If you are looking for a super effective facial mask, the Antioxidant Berry Masque ($32.99) is one you want on your list.  As soon as it’s applied, skin starts to warm up and tingle from the major antioxidants including blueberries, cranberries, and vitamins A, C, and E.  This mask also has glycolic (a leave-on exfoliant) and alpha lipoic acids (a topical enzyme that is a terrific antioxidant).

This is a very powerful and effective mask that eliminates dead skin cells in about 8 minutes.  It is definitely a winner.

For a holistic approach to skin care, take a look at Lady Soma.  In addition to great skin care products, they also have some of the best supplements on the market.  – Lisa

Top 5 homemade skin care treatments with coconut oil

Nutiva collageSince I write about beauty for a living, I spend a lot of time researching skin care ingredients and how they affect the skin and body. I am also fascinated with ingredients that work from the inside out, like vitamins and foods that help create a strong body and a beautiful complexion.  I’ve started incorporating coconut oil into my diet in place of butter, shortening, and vegetable oil because it does three things:  1.  is easily processed by the liver into lots of energy; 2.  protects the body from infections, heart disease, and illness; and 3.  helps you lose weight.  Not only that, it tastes terrific.  So when Nutiva sent us their Coconut Oil (15 fl. oz $11.99), I was already happy – but not as happy as I became when I realized what a great ingredient it is for topical skin care.

Nutiva Coconut Oil

Nutiva Coconut Oil

Nutiva Coconut Oil - organic and sustainable

Nutiva Coconut Oil – organic and sustainable

Coconut oil is solid at lower temperatures, and liquefies at temps above 76 degrees farenheit.  I find it’s best for skin care recipes when it is at that ‘almost about to melt’ stage.  I’ve tried tons of recipes for face masks, body scrubs, face cleansers, and hair treatments, and these are my top five favorites. Be sure to use organic and raw ingredients when you can!

1.  Coconut oil hand and body scrub

1 tablespoon coconut oil, 2 tablespoons honey, 1/4 cup sea salt, 1/4 cup sugar, 1 tablespoon lemon juice

Mix together and use this in the shower or just leave it next to the sink for a quick hand scrub.  It leaves hands super soft and moisturized.

2.  Moisturizing coconut oil facial mask

2 tablespoons coconut oil, 1 tablespoon honey, 1/2 mashed avocado

Mix together and apply immediately.  Leave it on for 20 – 30 minutes then rinse off.  This gives skin a great glow!

3.  Coconut oil facial cleanser

1 tablespoon coconut oil, 2 drops tea tree oil, 2 drops lavender oil – add some lemon juice if your skin is oily or prone to blackheads

This mixture dissolves even the most tenacious makeup and leaves skin hydrated.  Be sure to avoid the eye area – use straight coconut oil to remove eye makeup.  It’s the best.

4.  Coconut oil foot scrub

3 tablespoons coconut oil, 1 tablespoon brown sugar.

After scrubbing and rinsing off this scrub, apply straight coconut oil to feet then cover with socks – in the morning your feet will be amazingly soft.

5.  Coconut oil hair mask

1 tablespoon coconut oil, 1 tablespoon honey – double the recipe for long hair.  Heat the mixture up on the stove for a great hot oil treatment.  Apply to dry hair from roots to ends, cover with a shower cap and let soak in for a half hour.  Then, shampoo and condition like normal and you will be astounded at how soft and shiny your hair has become.

Nutiva Coconut Oil

Nutiva Coconut Oil

Coconut oil by itself makes a great eye cream, lip moisturizer, and makeup remover!  I particularly like Nutiva Coconut Oil because it is:

  • Organic
  • Non-GMO
  • Virgin
  • Non-hydrogenated
  • No cholesterol
  • Made from fresh coconuts

Give homemade skin care treatments a try.  It’s a lot of fun, and the results are fabulous.  With the holidays coming up, homemade skin care treatments in cute little jars make great gifts (except for the one with avocado – that has to be used immediately).  Believe me, coconut oil is going to become your best friend, both in recipes for food and in recipes for skin care.  – Lisa

Belli Anti-Blemish Basics

If you’ve heard of the brand Belli then you know that it’s a brand that began its life as a safe brand for pregnant women. Considering I’m in menopause it sure doesn’t seem like it would be an appropriate brand for me but guess what – it’s very fitting for me and for you. When Belli offered to send a few products the timing was perfect because I was going through my summer breakout time. I said yes and learned a lot about these products. I have two products from Belli, Anti-Blemish Facial Wash and Fresh Start Pre-Treatment Scrub.

Belli Anti-Blemish Facial Wash and Fresh Start Pre/Treatment Scrub

Belli Anti-Blemish Facial Wash and Fresh Start Pre-Treatment Scrub

Belli wants women to start with them when they are planning pregnancy, are pregnant and to keep with them beyond pregnancy. No matter what age women are, our hormones can go wacky. Even my elderly mother has an occasional breakout.

Their motto tells it all: Picky for a Purpose. We want to take care of ourselves all the time but during your pregnancy or if you are nursing you need to watch what you use so much more.belli slogan
The Anti-Blemish Facial Wash ($22/6.5 oz) is what I really needed the most for the breakouts I was having. My skin doesn’t love hot humid weather. It seemed like every few days there was another little bump that wanted to skew the results of other skincare I was using. I have used this in the evenings when I had a flare up and it helped calm any redness I was having. It’s a clear wash without fragrance. My skin is drier now than it used to be so I need to be careful that a cleanser isn’t going to strip it. The Belli is doing a nice job of keeping my skin clean but not dry. I follow with a Reviva Lab Serum and later moisturizer and my breakouts are basically gone. (I need to keep my hands off the one that I’ve irritated though!!)
Here’s some information from Belli:
• Features lactic acid to cleanse and gently exfoliate acne prone skin
• FREE OF salicylic acid, glycolic acid, and benzoyl peroxide– common acne fighting ingredients that should be avoided during pregnancy
• Contains lemon peel oil, a natural anti-bacterial and skin brightener
• With green tea extract and cucumber, both are rich in antioxidants
Belli Anti-Blemish Facial Wash

Belli Anti-Blemish Facial Wash

The Anti-Blemish Facial Wash won’t be my personal daily cleanser but it will live on my bathroom counter so that when the zits decide to come out and party, I’ll be ready for them.
The other product I’ve used from Belli is actually a Prep product so I should have mentioned it first. Oops. Fresh Start Pre-Treatment Scrub ($24, 6.5 oz) is a scrub like a dermabrasion scrub that can be used on your face and body. It surprises me how many women don’t know about a scrub like this. I was telling a friend about a scrub I had reviewed and she didn’t know one thing about them. A scrub like this keeps your pores cleansed, gets rid of dead skin and helps prepare your skin for other treatments. Here’s what Belli has to tell us about their Fresh Start Pre-Treatment Scrub:
• Features green tea extract and ginseng, both are rich in antioxidants
• Helps prepare skin for the application of other Belli products
• Includes the refreshing aromatherapy of peppermint oil
Belli Fresh Start Pre-Treatment Scrub

Belli Fresh Start Pre-Treatment Scrub

This is a great scrub to use 2 to 3 times a week. I have quite a few scrubs so I interchange but I did use this one exclusively for a few weeks while testing Belli for review. I used it twice a week and found it gentle on my skin. It’s nice to take it in the shower, get the refreshment of the peppermint oil and at the same time work on my face and body. The Anti-Blemish Facial Wash is a great follow up.

You can find these products at many retailers and etailers. It’s carried at the BuyBuy Baby that’s right near my house so I can even use one of the $5 coupons they send me all the time. It’s also available at drugstore.com, Ulta.com, and many maternity sites.

As you can see, this is an ageless company. I’m happy to have what helps me rather than care that it’s a brand created for a woman in her child bearing years. These are products I’ll continue to use and recommend to my loved ones. — Marcia
