derma e Soothing Cleanser and Hydrating Serum review

derma e is a wonderful line for effective and affordable vegan and cruelty-free skin care products. I’ve been very impressed with the products they sent the BIZ to test and two of my favorites are the Soothing Cleanser and the Hydrating Serum.

derma e Soothing Cleanser

derma e Soothing Cleanser

derma e Soothing Cleanser

derma e Soothing Cleanser

The Soothing Cleanser ($15.50) is a very gentle way to remove makeup. There are no sulfates to dry out the skin, and it is pH balanced and great for sensitive skin. While this is billed as fragrance-free, I need to note that it does have a scent to it because of the Lemongrass and Chamomile extracts. However, it is a soft fragrance that shouldn’t bother most people. It leaves my skin cleansed, calm, and happy. It also helps to eliminate redness and irritation. derma e’s studies found these results:

• 85% of subjects reported reduced redness

• 92% of subjects reported less irritation

• 97% reported effective removal of makeup

• 95% reported soothed skin

• 95% reported soft skin

And as an added bonus, this cleanser is 100% vegan, cruelty-free, paraben-free, sulfate-free, mineral oil-free, lanolin-free, gluten-free, and GMO-free.

derma e Hydrating Serum

derma e Hydrating Serum

derma e Hydrating Serum

derma e Hydrating Serum

The Hydrating Serum ($29.50) is a wonderful creamy liquid that reduces the look of fine lines and wrinkles by plumping them right up. The Hyaluronic Acid in it attracts moisture and keeps it in the skin, and the antioxidant vitamin C fights free radicals and keeps skin looking healthy.I have been using one pump of this every morning and night for the past two months and I am really liking the results. Just like the Soothing Cleanser, the Hydrating Serum is 100% vegan, cruelty-free, paraben-free, sulfate-free, mineral oil-free, lanolin-free, gluten-free, and GMO-free.

There are several products from derma e that are big favorites of mine, like the Soothing Toner and the Overnight Peel. Now I have added the Soothing Cleanser and Hydrating Serum to my list of ‘must haves’ from derma e!  - Lisa

Wipes and washes

Wipes and Washes

Wipes and Washes

I remember as a tween fighting about cleansing every night. I never wanted to wash my face and I hated taking baths. We lived in an old house and the water always felt cold to me. My, how time has changed all of that. Now I wouldn’t think of going  to bed without cleansing my skin. Even on my laziest nights I do something or I’d be tossing and turning worrying about my pores getting clogged and my skin being unable to breathe. It’s one of the most beneficial steps in skincare.

I’m sharing some of the products that I’ve been using for the last few months. I go through a lot of wipes, both daytime and nighttime, so if this seems heavy on that end it’s because they get used for so many things.

Wipes from Aveeno, Atopalm, Almay

Wipes from Aveeno, Atopalm, Almay

Atopalm Moisturizing Cleansing Wipes (empty now)

Atopalm Moisturizing Cleansing Wipes (empty now)

Atopalm Moisturizing Cleansing Wipes ($12.99 for 25) – I bought these from Dermstore because of their skincare claims. My logic was that if I was going to use a wipe at night instead of a cleanser that it would help to have one that was also moisturizing. I’ve used several Atopalm products with success so I knew these would be ones I like. According to Atopalm: ATOPALM Moisturizing Cleansing Wipes are luxurious cleansing cloths formulated with exclusive Multi Lamellar Emulsion Formula and vitamin E. The nourishing blend soothes and softens your skin while combating environmental influences. Allantoin calms as portulaca oleracea extract minimizes redness. Grapeseed, jojoba seed and olive oils deliver moisture, leaving your skin luminous and supple. I never use these on my eyes but I do feel like these are the best for my skin of the wipes I’ve tried.

Aveeno Ultra Calming Makeup Remover Wipes

Aveeno Ultra Calming Makeup Remover Wipes

Aveeno Ultra Calming Makeup Remover Wipes ($6.99 for 25)* – I’ve been using these for a few years now. These are actually daytime wipes for me since they are fragranced and I prefer fragrance free before bed. “With ACTIVE NATURALS® CALMING FEVERFEW® , an ingredient related to chamomile, these wipes leave sensitive skin feeling soothed and balanced.”

Aveeno Positively Radiant Makeup Remover Wipes

Aveeno Positively Radiant Makeup Remover Wipes

Aveeno Positively Radiant Makeup Remover Wipes ($6.99 for 25)* – These are a newer wipe from Aveeno. I like that they are oil free. Unfortunately these are fragranced so I don’t use them to remove my night time makeup but I do use them often when I’m swatching products for reviews. The swatches come off cleanly without leaving any residue so I can keep on truckin’. If you aren’t sensitive to fragrance I highly recommend these. “They combine exclusive ACTIVE NATURALS® Total Soy Complex, an ingredient long known to enhance skin’s radiance, with gentle cleansers that won’t dry out or irritate skin.”

Almay Oil-free Makeup Remover Towelettes

Almay Oil-free Makeup Remover Towelettes

Almay Oil-free Makeup Remover Towelettes ($6.99 for 25) – I’ve experimented with different drugstore towelettes and found that the Almay are the ones I like best for night use. I love that they are oil-free and of equal importance fragrance-free. I have used these on my eyes although they aren’t great for removing gel liner or mascara. Mostly I use these on my face though and it feels like I’m getting my face washed without water. Almay says: “hydrates and soothes skin without irritation. Botanical blend of aloe, cucumber and green tea. This face makeup remover leaves no greasy residue, so there’s no need to rinse. Hypoallergenic.”

Cleansers - Herbal Choice Mari, Philosophy, Painted Earth

Cleansers – Herbal Choice Mari, Philosophy, Painted Earth

Herbal Choice Mari Organic Makeup Remover

Herbal Choice Mari Organic Makeup Remover

Herbal Choice Mari Organic Makeup Remover  ($22 on sale for $16.95)* -  This vegan and organic makeup remover is for the nights I have time to take off my makeup properly. It’s not really a cleanser, it’s more of a pre-cleanser. Directions say to put it on a piece of cotton and gently remove your makeup. It melts away the color quickly. “This natural makeup remover does not contain alcohol, chemicals, detergents or preservatives.” It’s recommended for use on eyes too so it’s really an all in one cleanser. It has a very slight herbal fragrance but it’s very slight. It doesn’t annoy me and I’m quite picky about fragrance. It leaves skin moisturized since it contains organic olive oil but it’s not the least bit oily. Some nights I follow with a cleanser and some just with water. If you can’t tolerate glutens, this is a great choice for you.

Painted Earth True Elegance Cleansing Milk & Make-Up Remover

Painted Earth True Elegance Cleansing Milk & Make-Up Remover

Painted Earth True Elegance Cleansing Milk & Make-Up Remover ($23.50)* – This cleansing milk really is elegant. There’s something special about its thick creamy texture that makes you feel like you are moisturizing as well as cleansing. It contains coconut milk which is what must give it that creaminess. You can use this on a pad to wipe off makeup but I prefer it as a regular cleanser. It works especially well with something like a Clarisonic or the Foreo Luna though you don’t really need a tool for it. It entirely removes all makeup, including eye makeup. I prefer to use a dedicated eye makeup remover on my eyes but I’ve used this too without stinging. With Painted Earth products you can always look to see the ingredients which I think is helpful. There’s an herbal fragrance to this so I follow with toner to lessen any lingering scent.

Philosophy Just Release Me Eyemakeup Remover

Philosophy Just Release Me Eyemakeup Remover

Philosophy Just Release Me Eyemakeup Remover ($18) – I normally use Mary Kay Oil Free Eye Makeup Remover but I was at a JC Penney Sephora and this was on sale for $12 when I was checking out so I decided to pick it up. The first time I used it I spilled a lot because the top is wide open and I didn’t realize that. But I’ve since learned to use it properly. This is a dual-phase eye makeup remover that is gentle and oil-free. It seems to work slightly better than the Mary Kay one on stubborn makeup like mascara and water-resistant eyeliners. Even though it’s more expensive than the MK I will replace it when it’s done so that I have something with this gentle power. Philosophy says: “Philosophy Just Release Me™ Dual-Phase Oil-Free Makeup Remover gently yet effectively breaks down and removes the toughest eye makeup, even waterproof makeup, without irritating the eyes. Formulated with natural aloe, and chamomile and cucumber extracts, this soothing essential works to calm, clean, cool, and refresh the eye area.”

Obviously I don’t use these all every night. I base my choice usually on how much time I’ve left myself, how much makeup I’m wearing and how lazy/industrious I am that night. All are products I have no trouble recommending and will continue using them.

What are your favorite wipes and cleansers? I’m always looking at different options so please share. — Marcia

Healthy skin with Kiehl’s Ultra Facial Cleanser and Toner

The Kiehl’s line has always fascinated me. The packaging is old-school pharmacy and the prices are extremely reasonable, especially for a line found in high-end department stores. The BIZ was sent two Kiehl’s products to test:  the Ultra Facial Cleanser (5 oz. tube is $19.50) and the Ultra Facial Toner (8.4 oz. bottle is $16). Both are terrific skin care products.

Kiehl's Ultra Facial Cleanser and Toner

Kiehl’s Ultra Facial Cleanser and Toner

The Ultra Facial Cleanser is a no-frills, no messing around water-soluble cleanser that does exactly what a great cleanser should do. It dissolves even the heaviest makeup without stripping the skin thanks to emollient ingredients like Squalane, Apricot Kernel Oil, Vitamin E, and Avocado Oil. This cleanser will work for even very sensitive skin and another great plus is that it’s fragrance-free.

Kiehl's Ultra Facial Cleanser and Toner

Kiehl’s Ultra Facial Cleanser and Toner

The Ultra Facial Cleanser foams up slightly as you use it and it’s a terrific cleanser to use with face cleansers like the Clarisonic and the Luna. This is one of Kiehl’s most popular products and it comes by its terrific reputation honestly!

Kiehl's Ultra Facial Cleanser

Kiehl’s Ultra Facial Cleanser

The Ultra Facial Toner surprised me a bit, because it’s a little more creamy and thick than the typical toner. It’s very emollient and does a great job of hydrating the skin and preparing it for other skin care products like serums, treatments, and moisturizers. Moisturizing ingredients include Squalane, Apricot Kernel Oil, and Avocado Oil. It also has the excellent antioxidant Vitamin E to help fight off free radicals.

Kiehl's Ultra Facial Toner

Kiehl’s Ultra Facial Toner

The Ultra Facial Cleanser and Toner are my very first Kiehl’s products ever and I’m glad they were my introduction to the line! I recommend them both, but I definitely think the Ultra Facial Cleanser is a must have.  - Lisa

Win this terrific Mario Badescu Skin Care Set and beat those winter skin blues!

So it’s -25 degrees here in Michigan…I just read on Facebook that one of my friends injured herself after she passed out from the shock of inhaling the freezing air. It’s dangerously cold, the school are all closed, and my skin is crying from all this dry indoor heat, not to mention wind burn from just running out to get the mail!

Mario Badescu has fantastic products to help beat this winter cold and they are giving a set to one lucky BIZ reader. Read on for more about the Seaweed Cleansing Soap, Super Collagen Mask, and Lip Wax – plus your chance to make this set your own.

Mario Badescu Seaweed Cleansing Soap

Mario Badescu Seaweed Cleansing Soap

thick, creamy green goodness

thick, creamy green goodness

The Seaweed Cleansing Soap (8 0z $12, 16 oz $20) is a very thick, green cleanser with tiny bits of seaweed that help with exfoliation. It’s perfect for normal to oily skin and it is fragrance-free. It cleanses beautifully without drying out skin. The seaweed nourishes the skin with minerals while also acting as an anti-inflammatory, which is great for my irritated winter skin.

Mario Badescu Super Collagen Mask

Mario Badescu Super Collagen Mask

more green goodness for your face!

The Super Collagen Mask ($18) is a clay mask for normal to oily skin.It is a thick, pudding-like mint green mask that doesn’t have a discernible scent. The Super Collagen Mask helps firm and purify skin but what I really love is that it’s full of wonderful soothing agents like Azulene and oatmeal that make my skin happy.

Mario Badescu Lip Wax

Mario Badescu Lip Wax

my latest addiction...

my latest addiction…

The Lip Wax ($5) is available in two forms – jar and stick. I like the stick version because then I don’t need to be concerned with dipping my fingers into anything. This is an excellent lanolin-based lip balm that soothes and heals dry lips. It sort of ‘melts’ onto my lips, and I love the wonderful slip it gives them. The Vitamin E helps makes my lips smooth and hydrated. Lip Wax is my latest lip addiction!

Now is your chance to win a  Seaweed Cleansing SoapSuper Collagen Mask, and Lip Wax to help you beat the winter skin blues!  This giveaway is for US and Canada only and open through February 10, 2014.  Good luck!  - Lisa

Michael Todd True Organics – cleanser, scrub and giveaway

Michael Todd True Organics is a new brand to us on Beauty Info Zone and one that we’ve been testing out to tell you about. They’ve been very generous with us in sending products so that we can learn about them and share that information with you. Plus their generosity extends to our readers since they’ve offered a giveaway that I’ll write about at the end of this review.

Michael Todd Honey and Oat Cleanser and Jojoba Charcoal Scrub

Michael Todd Honey and Oat Cleanser and Jojoba Charcoal Scrub

Michael Todd True Organics is an excellent organic skincare company that interestingly enough was created by the owner of Scunci hair products. Scunci is the number one selling brand for hair accessories; I know I’ve got a drawer filled with items from them. The owner, Lewis Hendler, saw a lack of truly natural/organic products on the market. He saw products that called themselves that but they contained ingredients like mineral oil which suffocate skin. After much research his line was created to nourish your skin the same way you’d nourish your body with food. All products are Made in the U.S. with certified organic ingredients, without added water and free of parabens, sulfates, synthetic fragrance or artificial dyes.”

Michael Todd Honey and Oat Cleanser

Michael Todd Honey and Oat Cleanser

There are 4 different cleansers in the Michael Todd True Organic product line and the one I have is Honey and Oat, Gentle Deep-Pore Cleanser ($24). I was actually a little leery to start using this cleanser. My mind pictured it as thick, maybe difficult to remove and possibly sticky. Boy was I wrong. This has quickly become my cleanser of choice. I absolutely love it. I’m always complaining about fragrance in products but this time I’m going to rave. It has a very pleasant aroma of sweet lemon with a touch of honey added to it.

Michael Todd Honey and Oat Cleanser

Michael Todd Honey and Oat Cleanser

The important thing though is that this cleans my face gently and efficiently. If I use a toner or exfoliating pad after cleansing, nothing seems to be remaining. This has gently removed my makeup without stripping it of the natural oils it needs. It’s a gel cleanser that foams up slightly. I’ve been using it a lot with my Foreo Luna and they are a great combination. But I’ve also used it with just a washcloth and have been equally impressed with its cleansing ability.

Michael Todd Honey and Oat Cleanser

Michael Todd Honey and Oat Cleanser

To be honest I’m not so sure about the deep pore cleansing though. I guess I expected it to be more exfoliating in order to do that. It gets my pores clean but I don’t think it’s exfoliating just a terrific cleanser. I don’t need to worry about that though because Michael Todd True Organics has a slew of great scrubs that do that job well.

Michael Todd Jojoba Charcoal Scrub

Michael Todd Jojoba Charcoal Scrub

There are 3 scrubs that Michael Todd makes and I’ve got two of them. Today I’m going to tell you about the Jojoba Charcoal Scrub ($18). This is their gentle exfoliating facial scrub. It contains Jojoba Wax Beads and Activated Charcoal. The scrub’s goal is to remove dead skin and impurities from your skin. The jojoba wax beads are what provides the gentle exfoliation which the charcoal penetrates into your pores to draw out the impurities.

Michael Todd Jojoba Charcoal Facial Scrub

Michael Todd Jojoba Charcoal Facial Scrub

Michael Todd Jojoba Charcoal Facial Scrub

Michael Todd Jojoba Charcoal Facial Scrub

What I learned with Jojoba Charcoal Scrub is that I need to use this in the shower. It’s a little too messy to use at the sink and I have a difficult time removing all of the product if I do it there. Instead I’ve been using it in my shower where I can get my face super wet and rinse it off more thoroughly. I then follow it with the Honey and Oat Cleanser and a washcloth. This removes the beads and charcoal and at the same time gives my skin back the hydration.  It’s gentle enough to use as often as you wish though I use it about twice a week.

Now I promised you a giveaway and here’s what it’s all about. Their PR company is going to send 3 full size products to one lucky US winner. They will pick which three out of this list: Knu Anti Aging Face Lift Serum, Jojoba Charcoal Scrub, Avocado Mango Mask, Charcoal Detox Cleanser, Pink Grapefruit Lotion, Liposome Antioxidant Moisturizer, Eye-O-Sonic Ultrasonic Ionic Serum Infuser, Peppermint Wake Up Wash, Pumpkin Mask Nutrient-Rich Facial Mask. We don’t know which ones they’ll choose so it will be a surprise. In the Rafflecopter I’ve asked which would be your favorite to win and we’ll pass that information on to them just in case they would like to make that wish come true. But even if you don’t get that one,  it’s still a win-win situation since if you do win you’ll get three terrific Michael Todd True Organic skincare products. The giveaway lasts through 9/26/13 at 11:59 p.m. eastern time and is for US subscribers only.

Here’s the motto of Michael Todd: “You’ll love what’s in it. You’ll love even more what’s not.” We love it! — Marcia

Surprise your significant other with Aveeno Active Naturals for Men

I guess today is my version of drugstore heaven! This review is about some fantastic drugstore items you will want to pick up for your significant other, father, son, male muse…whatever you happen to have. The price point is ridiculously awesome and all of these products are fragrance-free and made for sensitive skin.

Aveeno

Aveeno Active Naturals Men’s products

I am talking about the new Aveeno Active Naturals Men’s products. My husband tested all three for the BIZ when Aveeno sent samples and he is crazy about each one. He says they are the best men’s products he has ever tried.

Aveeno Face Wash

Aveeno Active Naturals Men’s Face Wash

The Aveeno Active Naturals Men’s Face Wash ($5.99) is a creamy lotion that washes away dirt and grime.  It has tiny scrubbing beads that exfoliate dry and dead skin. It’s made with Natural Colloidal Oatmeal, which moisturizes my hubby’s skin but doesn’t break him out. If your guy is prone to milia, have him try this cleanser. It also softens up that 5 o’clock shadow so shaving is even easier. And it is completely fragrance-free. It smells like…nothing at all.

Aveeno Shave Gel

Aveeno Active Naturals Men’s Shave Gel

The Aveeno Active Naturals Men’s Shave Gel ($3.99) shoots out a thin stream of gel that instantly turns into foam – so much fun! Let’s be honest, how many of you have sprayed gel shave cream into your hand just to watch it transform? I can’t be the only one.

My husband loves this because it leaves his skin extremely soft. Unlike other heavier shaving creams it doesn’t clog his razor. In fact, he says it keeps his skin from getting irritated even when he uses a rather dull razor. And it smells exactly like…nothing at all.

Aveeno After Shave Lotion

Aveeno Active Naturals Men’s After Shave Lotion

Like the Active Naturals Men’s Face Wash, the Aveeno Active Naturals Men’s After Shave Lotion ($5.99) is made with Natural Colloidal Oatmeal. My husband uses this after every shave. It is soothing to razor burned or irritated skin, and it leaves his skin soft but not wet or greasy. And unlike pretty much every other after shave lotion out there, this one smells like…you guessed it. Nothing. Nothing at all.

Aveeno Active Naturals Men’s products are fantastic. They are affordable, easy to find, effective, and will work for even the most sensitive skin. Surprise the guy (or guys) in your life with some Aveeno…he will thank you for it!  - Lisa

Terrific drugstore find: Neutrogena Ultra Gentle Daily Cleanser

Who doesn’t love a good buy? I relish finding an effective product that is easy to find and super affordable. So I am excited to tell you about a wonderfully economical and effective cleanser that can readily be found right at your local drugstore: Neutrogena Ultra Gentle Daily Cleanser ($8.99).

Neutrogena Gentle Daily Cleanser

Neutrogena Ultra Gentle Daily Cleanser

This very large (12 fluid ounce) bottle arrived from Neutrogena® a few months ago and I have been using it ever since. The bottle is so big I will probably get another 6 months of use from it, making this an especially good buy.

The Ultra Gentle Daily Cleanser is a water-soluble cleanser that works great for my increasingly sensitive skin (thanks a lot, hormones). I use long-wearing foundation that is difficult to remove and this cleanser does an excellent job. It’s lightweight with a very slight foam that works admirably on its own, although the silky, soft formula is even more effective with a cleansing tool like the FOREO Luna. It leaves my skin feeling clean but not tight.

Although this cleanser is made for sensitive skin it definitely has a detectable fragrance. Neutrogena® says it is “formulated with a hypoallergenic fragrance that is free of known skin allergens and irritating essential oils.” However, if you are sensitive to fragrance this may not be the cleanser for you.

it's a wonderfully large bottle

it’s a wonderfully large bottle

Overall, this is a terrific facial cleanser that is mild but very effective. It will work marvelously for all skin types except for extremely sensitive or extremely oily skin. The next time you are at the drugstore you will want to pick this up.  It’s a real bargain and an excellent facial cleanser.  - Lisa

P.S.

Here’s some great information from Neutrogena for those with acne-prone skin.  Throughout August, when you purchase Neutrogena Oil-Free Acne Wash and Oil-Free Pink Grapefruit Cleansing Wipes at Target, you can receive a free wristlet.

Adult acne affects 25% of adult men and 50% of adult women at some time.  According to dermatologist Dr. David Bank, the damage of the summer’s rays can cause blockage of the sebaceous oil glands, sometimes translating into breakouts during the fall season. (This makes year-round sunscreen even more important!)

Your healthy skin hall pass is knowing the truth about clear skin. Are you guilty of believing any of these myths?

  • ·         Blackheads are dirt.
  • ·         The sun is a breakout cure-all.
  • ·         Breakouts and make-up are a bad combo.
  • ·         Pizza = pimples.
  • ·         Toothpaste can clear up acne.
