Gimmick or essential? The Doll 10 BlendSmart Rotating Foundation Brush

Doll 10 Rotating Foundation BrushA rotating foundation brush? Sounds pretty gimmicky to me. I am low maintenance when it comes to foundation application. I mean, isn’t that what fingers are for??  So I was very doubtful when Doll 10 Beauty sent me the BlendSMART Rotating Foundation Brush to test. Did it turn out to be a happy surprise, or did it turn out to be just another unused brush collecting dust on my vanity?

Doll 10 blendSMART Brush

Doll 10 blendSMART Brush

The BlendSMART Rotating Makeup Starter Kit comes with everything you need to get this brush spinning:

  • BlendSMART Rotating Foundation Brush
  • Universal Foundation Brush Head
  • CR123A 3V lithium battery
  • Measures approximately 5-1/2″L x 1″W; weighs approximately 3.7 oz
Inside the Doll 10 blendSMART Brush box

You can put foundation on the brush head then apply – the on/off switch makes it pretty easy to toggle back and forth between spinning and not spinning. Or, you can use it after foundation application to buff.

Doll 10 blendSMART Brush

Doll 10 blendSMART Brush

There are definitely pros and cons to this brush.  Let’s start with the cons.

What I don’t particularly like:

The brush head spins 360 degrees and it spins pretty fast – 190 times a minute. In fact, this is not something you want to use close to your eyes or hair-line. When I tried to use it under my eyes the brush got away from me and while it didn’t hurt, it was an odd, unpleasant feeling. I just avoid the undereye area. The flat brush head doesn’t quite fit into tighter spots like around the nose.

Doll 10 blendSMART Brush

What I definitely like:

The brush head spins 360 degrees and it spins pretty fast – 3 times per second. It really and truly smooths out foundation and gives a beautiful finish. It takes ‘buffing out’ to a whole other level. I tend to overestimate the amount of foundation I need and this smooths out and corrects any application mistakes in seconds.

The flat brush head is easy to maneuver around most areas on the face and it works great with all types of foundation from powder to cream. I find that while I can use this brush to apply foundation, I actually like it even more as a finishing touch. I can put my foundation on using my hands (I like the way foundation melds with my skin with the additional body heat) and then buff using the brush for a really awesome finish. It smooths out foundation so it doesn’t settle into pores or wrinkles. I also find it’s a great way to correct those times I am a little over-enthusiastic with my blush application.

I am totally shocked by this, but the BlendSMART Rotating Foundation Brush is something I reach for almost every day! It may seem like a gimmick, but this brush is truly useful and well worth the price. You can find it on QVC, normally it’s $66 but right now it’s listed for $59.98.  – Lisa

What could possibly be softer than a baby bunny’s ears? What could be more luxurious than a yacht taking you to an island vacation? What could be more exciting to have in your brush collection than ARTIS MAKEUP BRUSHES? Artis is a new brand to most of us but it’s about to take the cosmetic world by storm.

Artis Makeup Brushes are mostly oval with mirrored backs. They have CosmeFibre® fibers made of soft animal-free fibers. They are densely packed with the end of each fiber tapered to a microscopic tip that can’t be seen individually by the human eye. I was given the opportunity to try out ARTIS OVAL 10 BRUSH to my delight. This brush has over 250,000 bristles!

Artis Oval 10 Brush

Artis Oval 10 Brush

The Oval 10 brush itself is quite large (1 3/4″W, 1 1/4″ H, 8″ L) and is meant for powder but it does so much more. My friend Helen, from Lola’s Secret Beauty Blog, taught me to use this for foundation/BB-CC Cream application and I was thrilled to learn this method. It marries the best of two worlds with its softness and refined blending application. It is also supposed to be an excellent tool for smoothing on self tanners because of the coverage it gives.

The curved handles are unusual at first sight but once you put this perfectly balanced brush in your hand, you understand the beauty of the ergonomics. The brush has a slight flexibility to it making it glide over the planes of your face with ease. And did I mention how soft this is??

There are 19 brushes (10 from Artis brushes and 9 from Fluenta) that have been created by one of the makeup industry’s innovators and a former MAC Cosmetics Senior Executive, Matthew Waitesmith. He focused on the challenges of makeup “self-application” and delivering superior cosmetic performance, while taking inspiration from how he would draw a human face.

Artis Elite 10 brush set

Artis Elite 10 brush set

Brushes range in price from $32 to $72 with several sets that are sold at Artisbrush.com, Net A Porter, and now QVC has a set too. Oval 10 is the $72 brush and once you see it and feel it you’ll know it’s worth that kind of money. I am so excited about this brush that I bought the QVC set and am waiting for it. For $89.00 I’ll be the owner of Liner 1, Oval 3, Oval 6, cleaning foam and a cleaning pad. I’m still lusting after Circle 1R after watching a demonstration and I’m sure that will be on its way to me too.

SOHO London Beauty and the Beast Collection Cosmetics Bag

The London SOHO New York Belle Organizer is just $9.99.  I am really impressed with the quality of this bag! I thought that with the princess theme, the items would be the same quality as typical kids stuff…but my daughters are going to have to arm wrestle me for this. The top has a wide zip-top design and the bag is much larger than it initially appears. The outside fabric is a smooth satin and the inside is an easy to clean liner with a silhouette design of Belle and the Beast dancing. It is beyond cute and totally functional.

SOHO London Belle Enchanted Eyes Brush Set

The makeup brushes remind me of my Real Techniques brushes, which are some of my favorite brushes of all time. The Belle Enchanted Eyes Brush Set ($12.99) includes three eyeshadow brushes:

  • Medium Fluff Brush – Short round shape creates depth and detail.
  • Large Fluff Brush – Soft, fluffy bristles allow shadow to glide across eyelids with ease.
  • Flat Angled Liner Brush – Angled shape creates flawless lines and can be used with powder, gel or cream liner.

They all have nylon bristles so they work with everything from powder to cream  I love the flower detail on the handles…these brushes will make you look and feel like royalty.

For you Ariel fans, the Magical Illusion Brush Set ($14.99) has two brushes (including one dual-sided brush) for foundation, concealer, and highlighter. The set includes:

  • Complexion Perfecting Brush – Large end blends away imperfections while the smaller end banishes dark circles under eyes.
  • Beauty Highlighting Brush – Wide, short base highlights cheekbones, bridge of nose and anywhere else you want to sparkle.

Both have nylon bristles so they work with powder and liquid products. The quality of these brushes is excellent, the color and design is beautiful, and the price is right!!

I am SOLD on the London SOHO New York Disney princess products and plan to pick up some of the other items at Walgreens. I need the Jasmine Exotic Eyes Brush Set to complete my brush collection, and I want the Aurora Fairy Sponges and all of the Good vs. Evil items. Polished perfectly with Pixi Beauty

pixi april inside box

For some reason I never noticed the inside of the box when I receive a package from Pixi Beauty for consideration. While the box itself is the same each time, the month’s products are always a delightful surprise. And the quote from Petra, the founder of Pixi Beauty, hit home this time “I can help women capture their natural beauty effortlessly.” That’s more fitting for this trio of products than others I use from Pixi.

April's newest product from Pixi Beauty

April’s newest product from Pixi Beauty

These three products help give me a minimal makeup look if I want. They work together perfectly together or alone.

Let’s start with H2O Skintint ($24) which is a water based gel that is available in 3 shades. I have the middle shade Nude which is a little too dark for me but I am able to tone it down with a drop of a lighter BB Cream to make it blend in well on my skin. The lightest shade, Cream, would probably work perfectly for me so I’ll have to check Target to see if this is in stock.

Pixi H2O Skintint

The ingredients in this are soothing as well as moisturizing. The finish is considered to be a semi-matte. I love that it’s fragrance free.

Pixi Full Cover Foundation Brush

Pixi Full Cover Foundation Brush

Pixi’s FULL COVER FOUNDATION BRUSH is my favorite product in this review. It’s fabulous whether you want it for full coverage or for a lighter coverage like the H2O Skintint. This brush is a bargain at only $15 and it’s one you need in your collection, even if you already own a foundation brush.

Pixi Full Cover Foundation Brush

Pixi Full Cover Foundation Brush

The head on this brush is what makes it such a delight to use. It’s fuller than the typical foundation brush and very dense. It’s so soft that I want to use it all the time. Foundation practically blends itself with the use of this brush. It can be used for powder, especially a powder foundation, or concealer on larger areas too. This never leaves my face with brush strokes, just with natural looking foundation.

Pixi Full Cover Foundation Brush

Pixi Full Cover Foundation Brush

The last delight is one I was really excited to see in the box. In a previous Pixi review I wrote about how much I love the Correction Concentrate in Brightening Peach because it covers my dark circles. Well it now has a friend that’s so much easier for me to use because it’s in crayon form. UNDERCOVER CRAYON in PERK-UP PEACH is the baby sister of Correction Concentrate. This is a new product from Pixi Beauty and comes in 4 shades. Perk-Up Peach ($14) is for brightening and neutralizing redness and dark circles.

PIXI UNDERCOVER CRAYON in PERK-UP PEACH

The peach crayon applies lighter than my purposely darker swatch and blends in well with either my finger, a sponge or Pixi’s foundation brush. I like to use it in a V shape under my eyes using the side of the crayon, not the tip. I also use it at the corners of my nose to neutralize the redness that I usually have there. Here are the details from Pixi: “Youth-preserving formula with peptides to plump lines, wild rose to nourish & liquorice root to fade darkness. Dries matte, stays put and looks super natural.”  Youth preserving? They had me at that one!!

As usual Pixi and their cruelty free products make me sit up and take notice. Products I need at affordable prices that are easy to use. What are your favorites from Pixi? — Marcia

What is inside Lisa’s vintage purse?

I am all about purses, but not really the latest…although I definitely appreciate a Chanel or a Prada when I see one! My style is more boho or vintage, and when I find a gorgeous vintage purse I just about turn inside out. I love my stunning vintage purse that was actually a gift to me from my most beloved friend, who obviously understands my preferences because it is perfect for me.

It may not have a label, but I love it!

Now, I am a realist and I know I am a major procrastinator (just ask my poor, ever-patient blogging partner Marcia), so I just keep this purse filled with the perfect products at all times. That way, when I am running late for a fancy evening or event – and I am ALWAYS running late – I can just grab this and go, knowing that I have everything I need.

My favorite dressy purse contains a few beautiful and essential items that I was sent last year from Mont Bleu, an online site that features Swarovski jewelry and crystal nail files. This particular makeup mirror is still available – you can find it right HERE.

My Senna Blush & Bronze Duo in Beached Peach is always perfect for touch ups…have you ever noticed that nothing perks up your look quicker than a bit of blush??  I also love my little Crown Brush C109 Mini Bronzer Brush. Exactly what is needed for a purse.

Luck favors the prepared with the Minimergency Kit. It’s from the ‘Good Luck Series’ and the little four-leaf clover never fails to make me feel lucky. This little kit holds 16 different items that are truly essentials and it’s only 3.5″ x 2″ x 2″ so it fits into the palm of your hand. I am astounded at what fits into this mini life saver: hairspray; dental floss, band aids, and Blistex; Advil; a mini sewing kit that also includes a set of earring backs and clear elastics; and double-sided tape, breath mint drops; an emery board; a tampon; and clear nail polish. Just think of how many times you wished you had one of those items and couldn’t find one anywhere. Also included are three foil packs: nail polish remover, stain remover, and a deodorant towelette.

I use a wonderful little box that came with some Nudestix items to house my lippies. I always have a lip balm and this one is Savannah Bee Beautiful Sugar Lip Balm. My lipstick is the gorgeous Julie Hewett Oona Noir, and I love it with my Alison Raffaele Lip Gloss in Luscious, a shimmery gold, over top. I also carry my Face Stockholm Lip Brush that is the perfect size.Vintage purse lippies

The last items I throw into my purse before heading out the door include my phone, a Samsung Galaxy. I know people love their iPhones, but I am an Android girl all the way.

They have mirrored, gradient lenses and actually came with a hard case and cleaning cloth too. They are the most expensive sunglasses I have ever owned, but worth every single penny. They are still available on ShopBop in blue and in purple.

This post is going to be picture heavy so you can see for yourself just how nice the brushes in this kit are!

Vadae V403 - Jumbo Powder

Vadae V403 – Jumbo Powder

“Create a beautiful finish with this dome-shaped powder makeup brush. Ideal for applying loose powder on the face.” My assessment – this is soft and does the exact job it’s meant to do. Be sure to tap off the excess and then use the brush to buff loose powder to your face to set your makeup.

V406 – Large Angled Blush

V406 - Large Angled Blush from Vadae

V406 – Large Angled Blush from Vadae

“This angle-shaped makeup brush is ideal for contouring cheeks and cheekbones.”  My assessment – I love how soft this is and I wish I could have kept it pristine like this but I just have to use this. It’s a little larger than I like for a blush brush but it has so many uses since I can use it for powder, bronzer, highlighting powders and an all over blending brush for my cheeks.

V407 – Duo Fiber Face

VADAE V407 - Duo Fiber Face

VADAE V407 – Duo Fiber Face

“Use this makeup brush to give a nice even distribution of product. The combination of goat hair and synthetic bristles give an airbrushed finish look.” My assessment – I love a duo fiber (skunk brush) and get a lot of use out of this brush. It’s perfect for highly pigmented powders on my face. I like it to brush a light coating of a highlighting powder since it gives it a diffused look.

V408 – Deluxe Foundation

Vadae V408 - Deluxe Foundation

Vadae V408 – Deluxe Foundation

“The layered, tapered bristles of the Deluxe Foundation makeup brush help your makeup blend into a flawless finish. The large head makes application quick and easy to apply over the entire face.”  My assessment – this is a great foundation brush. It’s soft and never scratches, it makes liquid and cream foundations look flawless.

V409 – Tapered Concealer

Vadae V409 - Tapered Concealer

Vadae V409 – Tapered Concealer

“This small concealer makeup brush is perfect for applying and blending concealer under eyes or for small area coverage.”  My assessment – they got it right when they described this as being great for small area coverage. The best use for me with this concealer brush is to get up close to my eyelashes and to use this in the inner corner of my eye.

V307 – Eye Shader

Vadae V307 - Eye Shader

Vadae V307 – Eye Shader

“Used for applying cream eyeshadows, this medium-sized makeup brush allows for quick application and blending on the eyelid. It can be used with creams as well as loose and pressed powders.”  My assessment – I didn’t even realize this was meant for cream shadows until I started writing the review so I instantly used it that way and it’s great. I like using this for my everyday powder shadows and it’s actually my favorite brush in the kit that way.

V310 – Angle Shadow

Vadae V310 - Angle Shadow

Vadae V310 – Angle Shadow

“The angled tip of the Angle Shadow makeup brush easily sweeps color over your eye lid. Work color onto your brow and under the orbital bone.” My assessment – I use this angled eyeshadow brush for my browbone area. It fits in perfectly and is big enough to cover that whole area. Later I use it to blend the light brow shade with my crease color to remove harsh lines.

V101 – Lip Definer

Vadae V101 - Lip Definer

Vadae V101 – Lip Definer

“The rounded edge of the Lip Definer makeup brush allows for controlled application along the lip line while the flat side is ideal for filling in. It features flexible fibers and may be used to blend lip pencils, lip gloss, or lipsticks with ease to create definition or modify lip shape.”  My assessment – I like a firmer and slightly larger brush for lipstick when I decide to use a brush. The way I’ve been using this a lot though is to soften the line that my lipliner makes after my lipstick is applied. It blends the liner into the lipstick without having that obvious liner look that is so passe.

Vadae VBS200 - Pro Brush Cleaner

Vadae VBS200 – Pro Brush Cleaner

“One 40 gram professional makeup brush cleaner with brush scrubbing compact and storage bag.”  My assessment – WOW!!! Lisa reviewed this before and I was curious but until I actually started using this I didn’t know what I was missing. This works great for all brushes but it’s perfect for brushes you use with cream products especially. It gets out gunk I thought was long gone yet keeps my brushes (from any brand) in perfect shape.

• Packaging: Includes Cosmetic Storage Bag

This kit is a great way to either start your brush collection or add to it. There’s one brush I’d add which is the V302 – Blending Fluff

Vadae V302 Blending Fluff

Vadae V302 Blending Fluff

The Blending Fluff makeup brush will blend harsh lines of color into soft fading gradients. The natural goat hair bristles help apply pigment with ease for beautiful results.” I love this kind of brush and think all collections should have a blending brush like this.

For $98 ($110 if you add the Blending Fluff) you’ll be complete for your cosmetic needs. A little bit of everything and the best brush cleaner I’ve tried. What brushes are necessities for you? What brush cleaner do you use? — Marcia

Senna Cosmetics brushes are the way to go

Senna Cosmetics brushes I love

Senna Cosmetics brushes I love

I have a few things I have to get off my shoulders. I hope you are ready.

* I love cosmetics!

* I adore cosmetic brushes!

* Senna Cosmetics is one of my all time favorite brands.

That wasn’t too bad for either of us I hope. Earlier today I reviewed some of Senna’s cosmetics including their In the Mood for Nudes collection, Slipcover Foundation, HD Eye Lift and Baja Matte Bronzer. That Makeup Wars review was so long it spilled over into this one that’s specifically about the Senna brushes I have. I’ve owned 4 of these for years and I was lucky to receive 5 more from Senna.

Senna Cosmetics

Senna Cosmetics

Airbrush Blender brush 25 ($40) is what people call a skunk brush. It’s black bottom fibers are dense while it fills out into looser white fibers that do the work. This is a brush you need in your collection if you don’t have one already. It’s a multi-tasker that works great for bronzer and highly pigmented powders. I use it too for a highlighting powder to give an airbrush appearance. “Softly shagged dual synthetic and natural hair and dual length brush seamlessly applies and blends liquid, cream and powder foundations and bronzers.”

Airbrush Blender brush 25

Senna Airbrush Blender brush 25

Foundation 39 Brush ($30) is a brush that everyone needs to have in their brush collection. It’s possible to apply foundation with your fingers but you don’t always get the ideal coverage that way. This brush is both soft and firm. The tapered point helps you in the crevices of your face, especially around your nose. It works equally well with liquid and cream formulas but it’s a necessity for a cream since your fingers just won’t cut it with something like Slipcover Foundation. If this isn’t enough to convince you, use it with moisturizer, primer or cream blush. See all the uses!!

Senna Foundation 39 Brush

Multi 24 Brush ($20) is one I didn’t know I was missing in my life until it came my way. I love this little guy. “This is the go-to tool for concealing, blending, un-smudging, priming and more.” What a treasure. You can use this at home or on the go. Just use it!! You’ll thank me.

Senna Multi 24 Brush

Senna Multi 24 Brush

Angle Brush 506 ($20) is a great blush brush that I’ve had for years. It’s so soft and so accurate. “Rounded front angle covers the apples of the cheeks and narrow tapered end softly blends color off the edge of the cheek naturally.”

Senna Angle Brush 506

Senna Angle Brush 506

Baby Face 21 ($30) has been a favorite of mine for so long. I use it for everything. The size of the brush head is wonderful for blending anywhere on your face. It’s great for a pop of color on your cheeks, for a touch of powder (Senna HD Eye Lift) under your eyes, and for highlighting areas especially when contouring. “A Senna favorite and must have! An ultra-soft, pampering brush to apply loose powder in eye area to set concealers and brush on highlighter powders. Great for spot blushing and dusting color onto eyelids.”

Concealer 12 ($18) is a synthetic cruelty free brush that does what it’s supposed to – it helps conceal! It’s on the firm side so that you can lay your concealer down and afterwards blend with it.

Senna Concealer 12

Senna Concealer 12

Deluxe Fluff 600 ($18.50) is a brush I use mostly for blending. It’s wide and soft. It’s very flexible. I’ve used it for an all over eyeshadow color but my favorite use is when my eyeshadows are all on and I use this to blend away the seams so my shadows are well blended.

Senna Deluxe Fluff 600

Senna Deluxe Fluff 600

Detailer 623 ($27) this is one of the first brushes ever created for Senna. It was designed to give a soft liner look. I find it works better for me to use it for a hint of color under my lower lashes. It can also be used on your brows or to apply lipstick precisely.

Senna Detailer 623

Senna Detailer 623

Brow Pro 40 ($20) is a double ended brush that meets all your brow needs. The firm angle tip on the brush side is great for precise work with powders. I like that it’s not bigger than my brows so that I control it, it doesn’t control me. And it doesn’t hurt like some brow brushes can. The other side is a spoolie (groomer comb) so that you can brush your brows both before and after makeup application. Use it first to tame your brows and get them into shape. Then use it after with a pomade to set your brows for an all day last.

These are only a fraction of the wonderful brushes from Senna. Out of these 9 brushes my must haves are the Brow Pro, Multi-Brush and Baby Face. These are unique and incredibly helpful. Which brushes would you pick? — Marcia
