Lisa’s Top Ten Self Tanners

Self tanners have come a long way, baby. Years ago they were difficult to apply, smelled horrific, and turned you an unnatural looking orange. There are some truly great options out there today, options so great no one should be afraid to faux tan! I put my self tanners into two categories:  one night stands (these only last until you wash them off) and marriage material (these give you more committment – at least one week). Here are my top ten self tanners. The first five are my favorite one night stands and the next five are my favorite marriages.

1.  Gleam Body Radiance

Four fantastic color options, this one night stand is also the perfect remedy for any bad ‘marriages’.

2.  Red Carpet Kolour

Oh my this is a terrific one night stand…it makes any skin flaws disappear with beautiful tint and soft shimmer.

3.  Le Metier Bella Bronzer

The best liquid bronzer for the face and decolletage, hands down.

4.  Tarte Maracuja Rainforest Glow

A beautiful golden tan that is waterproof (hello swimming!) but not soap proof (hello one night stand!).

5.  Carlene K Shine Bronzer Body Glow

There’s a reason this is a favorite of Hollywood starlets – it’s gorgeous, easy to use, and I love the beautiful golden shimmer.

6.  Jan Marini Bioglycolic Sunless Self Tanner

I love this especially as a face tanner.  The color adjusts to your skin so it’s extremely natural looking.

7.  Supergoop Self Tanning Sunscreen Mousse

This sunscreen is also a gradual self tanner, which is a great way to build up to that commitment.

8.  Tan Towels

See the tan lines? Tan Towels are a super convenient way to make them a thing of the past – even if you have the tan lines of a blogger.

9.  Make Me Smooth You Glow, Girl

I buy this self tanner over and over because it gives gorgeous color and I can get it in any scent I want. My most frequent pick is Day at the Beach, which is a “Coconut infused scent potion that will take you back to lazy days spent at the beach.”

10.  Beautisol Summer Glow Dark Tan Body Self-Tanning Lotion

This is a marriage, all right – it takes some time but it applies beautifully, gives deep dark color, and is total marriage material.

Lisa from Beauty Info Zone visits her fantasy Desert Island

My fellow Beauty Spotlight bloggers have banished me to a desert island, and I can only bring 12 products (with sunscreen and lip balm already generously provided).  Ok, it’s my fantasy so I am going to let you know up front I am NOT going alone. Nope, on my trip to a deserted island I am accompanied by JOE.

One sniff of Lavanila Vanilla Coconut and I am here. With Joe.

Here’s my deserted island. And here is Joe.

Joe and I are going to be spending a LOT of time together so I kept that in mind when selecting my twelve items.  Here’s what I am packing for my romantic retreat… I mean desert island experience.

1. Beautisol Dark Self Tanner ($39):  I’m not going to tan in the sun, but a tan makes you look thinner, healthier, and it covers so many flaws!!  Before hanging out with Joe, I am first going to slather myself from head to toe with self tanner. Beautisol Dark Self Tanner is my go-to for a full body tan.

2. MAC Blot Powder ($24):  I live in fear of walking around with a shiny nose so I always have this with me.  It’s the perfect pressed powder.

MAC Blot Powder

3. It Cosmetics Bye Bye Undereye Concealer  ($24):  It’s full coverage, it’s waterproof, and it covers my dark undereye circles beautifully.  Joe and I may be staying up REALLY late at night, but it won’t show under my eyes!

Bye Bye Under Eye

4. MAC Paint Pot in Painterly ($18.50):  I am quite sure I’m not going to be doing full eye makeup on a desert island, but MAC’s Paint Pot in Painterly is my go-to for a clean, finished eye look in seconds.  This creamy eyeshadow dries down quickly and stays all day, and it never creases or cakes on me.

5. Paula’s Choice Gentle Touch Makeup Remover ($12.95):  I need a cleanser, cause there is no way I am going to get stuck with a blemish on this trip! This is the very best makeup remover I have ever found. It’s super gentle so it doesn’t irritate the eyes, but at the same time it removes even the most stubborn makeup. Another plus – it has anti-irritants that help reduce puffiness.

6. VENNeffect Anti-Aging Lip Treatment ($85):  I have issues with hereditary vertical wrinkle lines around my lips – and this stuff truly reduces their appearance. I’m not going anywhere without it.

7. Besame Sweetheart Balm in Cherry ($18):  I can’t believe I am picking a lip gloss that’s in a pot – sticking sandy fingers into lip gloss doesn’t sound good at all. But I just adore the unbelievable slip and texture of this gloss and the color is simply perfect with tanned skin.

Besame Sweetheart Balm

8. Sugar Works Body Gloss in Tybee Island Beach Cottage ($12.95):  I love their body oil, it leaves skin super moist but not wet, and the scent really becomes one with your body so it seems like you just naturally smell that way. This scent is described as “Sun, the ocean, warm sand, beach grass, wild beach flowers, a touch of suntan oil.” For sure Joe won’t be able to keep his hands off me.

9. Beach Day Spray by Unite ($29.95):  This is the best spray for that wavy, beachy look because it smells amazing and doesn’t leave your air-dried hair crunchy.

10. Whatever Lola Wants from the Lippmann Collection ($17):  This is my most favorite summer nail color of all time. It’s a beautiful shimmery lilac/lavender/pink and it looks especially amazing in the sun. This color makes me feel cute and sexy all at the same time.

11.  Body Glide from Athleta ($8):  This is a terrific way to prevent blisters on your feet and chafing around sports bras, plus it does extra duty moisturizing dry, cracked skin. You can insert your own joke about how with Body Glide I won’t have to worry about chafed thighs.

12.  My Poipu hat from Athleta:  I LOVE this sun hat. It has a nice foldable brim that is perfect for shading your eyes, but isn’t so big you bump into things as you walk. Squish it into your beach bag, and it pops right back into shape when you put it on.  It’s on sale now too for only $29.99 – sheesh, I paid $54 for mine!! You can find the hat HERE.

There’s my list! I’d invite you along, but Joe and I are in some serious need of ‘alone time’.  Aloha!  – Lisa

Lisa’s Top Picks of 2011: Skin Care, Body Care, and the rest!

A few days ago I posted my favorite color items, you can find that post here.  ‘Top picks’ posts are the ones I enjoy writing up the most, I love sharing the extra good stuff with you, and I love being able to put all this fabulousness in one review!  I was going to publish today’s post of my favorite skin care, body care, and other miscellaneous items yesterday, but boy did I get hit with the flu.  I’m all better now, so here is my list for you.

Favorite skin care:

I found several skin care items that I am constantly reaching for over and over. I love the Chella Foaming Cleanser Lavish Souffle, it the perfect cleanser and you only need a tiny bit.

Chella Foaming Cleanser

I really got into natural organic lines, like Annmarie Gianni Skin Care Neroli Toning Mist and Coconut Oil, beautiful products from a fantastic line with a great message.

I also loved the Artisan Naturals Lemon Cypress Exfoliating Mask, which is my favorite go-to for pesky breakouts.

To even out my skin tone, I have been absolutely loving the Omorfies Etenia Lightening Cream by Kleraderm.

Two other skin care lines that I adore are 3Lab (for their amazing Super Eye Treatment and Perfect Lips)

and YBF Skin Care (Hydrate B and Boost are flipping fabulous).

YBF Boost

Favorite primer:

This one is a tie for me.  I am completely impressed with Reviva Labs Makeup Primer,

it’s a great silicone based primer that actually goes on light.

And I am totally loving the Youngblood Mineral Primer,

Youngblood Mineral Primer

which has a wonderful texture and really helps my makeup stay put all day.

Favorite Facialist:

My favorite facialist this year was Joanne Kallabat, owner of Kleraderm.

Joanne Kallabat with her son, Michael

It’s such a treat to go to Nordstrom and get a $150 facial for only $20 – plus she gives the BEST face massage ever.  I love how she gives tons and tons of samples first.  She wants to figure out what works best for your skin before she will even let you buy anything!

Favorite Fragrances:

I have completely embraced the layering concept by Lisa Hoffman, and her Tuscan Fig fragrance is just to die for.

Lisa Hoffman Variations case with the Tuscan Fig fragrance

Plus, her iScentify scent finder is super fun to play with.

I also fell in love with the Juara Candlenut Fragrance.

This is a swoon-worthy coconut scent that makes everyone want to hug you.  And then hug you again.

Favorite storage solution:

Wow, this one was a life changer – the Zuca Pro Artist Case.

It has totally changed my organizational system, and has made makeup gigs so much easier, as well as travel.  Looks like we are going to be doing more contests with Zuca this year, so stay tuned!!

Favorite hand cream:

I am a hand cream addict, since I work at a school and need to wash my hands about twenty times a day.  I cannot do without my Votre Vu Duette Lux Lip Balm and Hand Cream.

Little mirror, lip balm, and then hand cream, all in one package??  Absolute genius, and the hand cream smells truly amazing.

Favorite body products:

2011 was a Whish year for me, that’s for sure. I love this retro line, every single product is a winner.

Just this morning I was thanking the Whish Gods for making their amazing Shave Crave Shaving Cream.

Tarte Cosmetics is a line better known for its great color products, but a true unsung hero is the Tarte Celebutante.

It’s a gorgeous body shimmer spray that smells unbelievably good, like fresh coconut and vanilla.  Yummy!!

Speaking of coconuts, I went pretty ‘coconutty’ for the Bodycology Island Coconut products.

The body cream, body wash, and body spray are all truly terrific, and I reach for them all the time.

Favorite sunning/self-tanner products:

I am a big fan of faux tanning, and I had some great discoveries this past year.  Hampton Sun is a go-to line for any sun products, including faux tanning.  I love the Privet Blossom products, they have a unique scent that is totally summer in a bottle.

Hampton Sun Shimmer Spray in Bronze

The spray SPF is amazing, and the faux tanning and body shimmer products are excellent.  Try this line, you won’t be disappointed.

Another great discovery that changed my faux tanning was the Beautisol Self Tanning Magic Mitt.

This $6 wonder completely changed my faux tanning experience for the better!!  No streaks, no worries, no problems.  Love it!!

I also fell in love with Tan Towels.  Such a quick, sanitary way to get a deep tan, plus the towelettes travel so well.

Miscellaneous:

Favorite cleaning products:

Dusting Fragrance

I am the first to admit that housekeeping is never a priority for me, so finding things that help make cleaning joyful is huge for me.  Sweet Grass Farm has pretty awesome cleaning products that give me extra motivation, my favorites are the Dusting fragrance and Lemon Verbena Liquid Soap.

Favorite clothing line:

I am totally digging the Sprigs clothing line.  Pictured above I am wearing my Banjee while shopping.  I love these little guys, they really do make life easier.  And I wear my infinity scarves all the time too.  So many great items, it’s a fabulous line that I am so happy I discovered this year!

That’s it for all my favorites of 2011.  And now on to an amazing year of even more terrific discoveries in 2012!!  – Lisa

Beautisol Self-Tanning Magic Mitts: are they really magic?

You know me, if there’s a product with the word ‘magic’ in the title I have to try it.  As I am a faux-tanning addict, it was inevitable that I would check out the Beautisol Self-Tanning Magic Mitt ($6.00).

So is it really magic?  In a word…YES

Why do I love to self-tan?  It’s slimming.  It makes my somewhat sallow complexion look vibrant.  And it’s way better for the skin than baking in the sun, chancing wrinkles and skin cancer.

What isn’t so great about self-tanning?  It is time consuming to do a whole-body application.  Streaks are embarrassing and difficult to remove.  It seems impossible to self-tan your whole body by yourself, and it’s not always easy to find someone willing to help.  I find it often seems like way too much hassle.

Beautisol has a great new product that comes to the rescue.  The Beautisol Self-Tanning Magic Mitt is a spongy applicator mitt for your hands.  Instead of wearing latex gloves, you put this over your hand, squeeze the self-tanner on the mitt, and then smooth the product over your body.  Pictured above is the fabric side of the mitt, this goes on the back side of your hand.

Here is the front side of the mitt, this is the part over your palm.  The self-tanner goes on this side.  I tried this mitt with lotion, mousse, and even spray tan ( sprayed it on my body then smoothed it with the mitt), and got truly amazing results.  The mitt spreads the self-tanner so evenly and so quickly it was incredible.  What normally would take me a half hour took me only 10 minutes.  I did also use this great tool, Beautisol’s Back Applicator ($10), for my upper back:

You can read my review of the Back Applicator here.

I always have such a hard time getting an even, streak-free application on my feet and ankles, and the Magic Mitt gave me a perfect, even tan every single time.

I also don’t like using latex gloves, they feel weird to me and it’s difficult to smooth in the self-tanner.  The Magic Mitt fits over your hand:

so there are no dirty palms.  I also found that it washes clean very easily.  Just be careful if you use a product with a dark tanning guide.  You need to wash the mitt right away or it will end up with stains.

Here is a close up of the spongy material.  It’s very soft and pliable, and I just can’t believe how quick a full body application is with this baby.  Plus it’s only $6!!  I am totally impressed.

Yes, the Beautisol Self-Tanning Magic Mitt  really and truly is magic. It’s holy grail material for anyone who self-tans!  – Lisa

Beauty Info ZoneYou might know me as: LisaBut my real name is: Lisa Ann ActonBorn and raised in: Outside of Detroit, Michigan. I grew up in a very small town and couldn’t wait to move away to somewhere exciting and exotic…and I ended up getting married, having children, and living in the neighboring town! So much for exotic!Childhood ambition: When I was young, I wanted to be four things: an actress, a writer, a teacher, and a counselor. Amazingly enough, I ended up having all four careers!

Wildest dream: To win an Oscar for Best Original Screenplay. I’ve dreamt about this for a long time…and actually recently won some writing awards, so who knows???

Best in the world at: Giving advice. Ok, I don’t know if I am ‘best in the world’, but I sure do love to do it.

Biggest challenge: Finding balance. I have so many interests, plus my family and work, it isn’t always easy to take care of everyone and everything and still find time for myself.

My blog in 3 words: Inviting. Unpredictable.

Inspiration: I am very inspired by the sales associates and makeup artists out there. They work unbelievably hard, and they dedicate themselves to helping others feel good about themselves. I think it’s an extremely noble profession that deserves nothing but respect and appreciation.

“Real” job: I am a guidance counselor at a high school. It’s a wonderful job, every day is different so it’s always exciting and challenging. I am also an English teacher so I do tutoring, plus I teach graduate courses for a local college.

Last beauty purchase: 5 different drugstore mascaras for an upcoming post.

I love Beautisol because: The products are extremely easy to use, there was obviously a lot of thought put behind the creation of the line. Side by Side – Top Ten products for 2011

We recently enthralled you with our Top Ten products in the color department and today we’ll do the same but with products in other categories. These are all items we’ve reviewed in the first 6 months of 2011 and have fallen in love with. It’s always hard to narrow down lists like this since there are so many others that we can recommend but we beat our heads against the wall and this is what we came up with. They aren’t listed in any particular order.

LISA’S TOP TEN

1.  YBF Skincare – I love everything I’ve tried from the line but I’ve only reviewed Boost and Hydrate B Concentrate. Both make any other products I use work better so they had to be part of my top 10.
2.  Skin 2 Skin Care – the Photoaging Repair Cream has become a staple for me.  I am saying goodbye to hyperpigmentation with regular use of this fabulous, elegant product.

3.  Makeup for Ageless Beauty by Linda Mason – I learned so much from this wonderful book. It’s the perfect book for those of us 40 and above. Linda Mason uses older models and realistic makeup as well as helps us solve problems. Highly recommended.
4.  Argan Magic hair products – What a fabulous line and it’s so affordable. I adore all 3 of the products I’ve used and I hope you’ll not only go read about them in my review but buy them too. You’ll be just as thrilled as I am.
5.  Beautisol Self Tanner – I’m obsessed with self tanners and Beautisol is one of the absolute best products on the market. One of these days I’ll even convince the pale Marcia that she’ll be safe with Beautisol.
6.  Sweet Grass Farms – Where to begin? I can’t pick out a favorite so you’ll just have to believe me that everything I’ve tried from Sweet Grass Farms is wonderful.
7.  Artisan Naturals – This is another brand I can’t get enough of. I’ve used Artisan Naturals for several years and every product is amazing. Good for you and good for the environment.
8.  Tarte Celebutante – I call this the unsung hero of Tarte’s line because you never hear about it but you should. Reread my review to see why.
9.  Xen-Tan – This is the most clever self-tanner on the market. The dial makes for perfect color no matter what shade you’d like your tan to be.

10.  Whish Shave Savour Hair Inhibitor – It’s summer and I hate shaving. Whish to the rescue.

MARCIA’S LIST:

  1. Sirius Skincare machine – This wonderful, affordable skincare machine is perfect for cleansing, hydrating, exfoliating and just making my skin glow.
  2. Stages of Beauty – Stages of Beauty Grace Cream comes to bed with me every night. They’ve perfected a brand for each age group and I appreciate this greatly.
  3. DNA EGF sunscreen  – This is the sunscreen that I use most days, no fragrance, moisturizing and gentle on my skin. Plus it’s got all this science behind it!
  4. Aveeno sun tour – the Aveeno Sunscreen Cancer tour is the best thing I’ve ever done for myself this summer. I learned so much about skin cancer and I’m grateful that Aveeno is providing this free service.
  5. Evan Healy – it’s unusual that a skincare company sells a trial kit so that you don’t have to shell out big bucks to make sure that a line works for you. Evan Healy has 3 kits and I’ve tried the Rose kit. It’s a line that I highly recommend.
  6. Enzo Skin Pure Vitamin E Oil – By far my favorite skincare product of the year. I love my Pure Vitamin E Oil. You’d think with summer that an oil would be too rich for your skin but you’d be thinking wrong. I still get dry patches and I know that Enzo Skin works for me each and every time.
  7. Exuviance Age Reversal eye cream – Oh I love eye creams and I have a ton (just bought a few more too!!) Exuviance though has been the one I’ve been reaching for most nights. It’s not too rich and it’s not too light, it’s just right.
  8. Real Techniques brushes (Pixiwoo) – Love, love, love. These brushes are worth every penny (and that’s about all they cost). I am constantly using the face brushes especially. The quality is amazing.
  9. YBF Skincare Define and Quench  – Lisa and I agree wholeheartedly about the YBF brand. Absolutely everything I’ve tried is wonderful. For my top ten I’m picking Define and Quench for lips since both have helped me since I tend to ignore my lips when doing skincare. Whenever I use these YBF products I’m reminded of how great they are.
  10. Sebastian Color Ignite – Sebastian Color Ignite Shampoo and Conditioner are products I recommend over and over. Whenever I’m asked about my hair (and it’s pretty often actually) I mention these. They are easy to find, reasonably priced and make my hair beautiful. Thanks for rereading our top 10. These are the standouts among other standouts.
