Sunday brings us summer helpers from AllGlamR, Cargo and Avon

This week’s Side by Side review is a little different from other weeks. We have 3 brands that we are using this summer and want you to know about. AllGlamR is the one we have in common and then both of us go off on different tangents to share something we’re eager to let you know about. So off to the triple roller coaster ride of Side by Side.

AllGlamR Tinted Sunscreen

AllGlamR Tinted Sunscreen

AllGlamR was created by  skin care pro Gina Caruso who has headed aesthetics in top medical practices, created a skin care division for a hair industry icon (Maurice Tidy) and has owned her own med/day spas. Well now she’s created her own line and just in time for summer you can purchased her tinted moisturizer. We received the two shades that it’s available in – Light and Medium.

Marcia uses Light which is recommended for light to medium tones and Lisa uses Medium, recommended for medium to dark tones.

Things we really appreciate about AllGlamR:  The tinted moisturizer is Paraben-free and cruelty free. AllGlamR does not test on animals. In addition it’s a product made in the USA. It contains SPF 30 that protects against both UVA and UVB rays.

Marcia’s experience: While I appreciate all the good things about AllGlamR including the fact that this has a radiant glow that’s just right for summer, I can’t seem to get past the fragrance of it. It takes about 30 minutes for it to dissipate enough for me to go on with my day. It’s not a bad fragrance, it’s a nice floral, but I’m not a fragrance kind of person.

Light is very light, I use two layers of this to achieve any color at all. The first layer gives me coverage while the second gives me enough of a tint to camouflage some of my darker spots. If fragrance is a non-issue for you then I’d recommend AllGlamR for some great sunscreen coverage.

AllGlamR Tinted Sunscreen in Medium

Lisa’s experience:  Luckily, I am not as sensitive to fragrance as Marcia is, so the scent doesn’t bother my nose at all. I hardly notice even notice it. I use Medium, which evens out my skin tone and gives me a very nice radiant glow. It doesn’t quite cover dark areas, but it does blend everything together, making this a terrific option for sunscreen on days I don’t want to go with foundation. I am a big fan and find myself reaching for this quite often this summer.

Marcia is loving CARGO SWIMMABLES

Cargo Cosmetics has come out with a summer line that you’ll want to use all year long. The name Swimmables tells it all. These are long-lasting cosmetics that are water-resistant and will help beautify you throughout the hot and muggy days ahead. You know they last through September so you’ve got plenty of time to get your use out of these. Try their bronzer, blush, eyeliners, eyeshadow crayons or follow my lead and try Cargo Swimmables Longwear Matte Liquid Lipstick.

I’ve got two of the six available shades and these are stunners. Ulta only carries them online which is too bad since I’d love to be able to see all of the shades.

Cargo Swimmables Cape Town

Cape Town is my obvious favorite. It’s described as a dusty pink matte. I find that there’s a touch of lavender in it. It’s not pink pink and it’s not a nude. Instead it’s an amalgamation of my favorite shades. It’s darker than I normally wear but it’s not too dark for me to be uncomfortable. While I normally don’t wear matte lipsticks this is surprisingly comfortable. Cape Town may be in South Africa I don’t feel like my lips are in the Sahara. Exfoliate well before using. I like to wipe off excess from the tip and carefully line with the wand, then lightly fill in my lips.

Cargo Swimmables Sorrento

Cargo Swimmables swatches:  Sorrento and Cape Town

Sorrento is named for the Italian seaside city and is described as a fuchsia matte. There’s a lot of red goodness to this beauty. It’s a shade you can picture Sophia Loren wearing with pride. Well you can too if you love these darker stunners. Swimmables Longwear Matte Liquid Lipsticks have a suede finish. They last well on me as long as I don’t eat something oily but I’ve yet to have a lipstick last through that.

Definitely add Cargo Swimmables to your list to make summer and fall a happier experience.

I wrote about these products a month or so ago and they have been saving my family all summer long. It’s no wonder that with 30 SPF, plus protection from mosquitoes and ticks (we are having a crazy huge tick problem around here this summer), protection from the Zika virus and all other sorts of bugs, no one walks out the door without slathering this on.

Avon Skin So Soft Bug Guard Plus SPF 30 in Gentle Breeze and Disappearing Color

The SKIN SO SOFT BUG GUARD PLUS IR3535® Gentle Breeze SPF 30 Lotion ($14) is the white one, and it has a light floral fragrance. The kids go bananas for the SKIN SO SOFT BUG GUARD PLUS IR3535® SPF 30 Cool ‘n Fabulous Disappearing Color Lotion ($14), which is blue – how fun is that?? – so you can see where it’s been applied. It dries clear and disappears into skin, but it’s a real kick while it’s still blue.

Our side by side rollercoaster trio of products keeps our faces protected while giving them radiance, makes our lips bright and beautiful, and keeps our bodies safe from UVA/UVB rays and all kinds of bugs.  We say thanks to AllGlamR, Cargo, and Avon every day for these terrific summer helpers!

Multi-tasking protection: Avon Skin So Soft Bug Guard Plus SPF 30 in Gentle Breeze and Disappearing Color

Avon Skin So Soft Bug Guard Plus SPF 30 in Gentle Breeze and Disappearing Color

We all know that it’s important to protect our skin from the harmful rays of the sun – but how about protection from the sun AND from Lyme disease? We are actually in danger of a big Lyme disease outbreak due to a rise in mouse and deer populations, which means more disease carrying ticks. Ewwww.

I ride my bike every day down a beautiful trail that is full of deer, mice, all sorts of critters – and that means the danger of ticks too. Thank goodness for Avon Skin So Soft Bug Guard products!!                                                            samples

Avon Skin So Soft Bug Guard Plus SPF 30 in Gentle Breeze

Avon Skin So Soft Bug Guard Plus SPF 30 in Disappearing Color

Remember back in the day when we all realized that Avon Skin So Soft kept mosquitoes from biting? Well, the Skin So Soft products still do that – protecting us from the Zika virus, by the way, and they also protect us from ticks and other bugs. Plus, they have SPF 30, which is essential for keeping skin safe. I love these particular Avon products because my kids love them – if kids think it’s fun, they will actually use the products.

  • SKIN SO SOFT BUG GUARD PLUS IR3535® Gentle Breeze SPF 30 Lotion ($14): Dermatologist-tested and hypoallergenic, this lotion is lightly scented with a cool, springtime fragrance.
  • SKIN SO SOFT BUG GUARD PLUS IR3535® SPF 30 Cool ‘n Fabulous Disappearing Color Lotion ($14): The pediatrician-tested, hypoallergenic, kid-friendly formula goes on blue so you can see exactly where it’s being applied, then dries and disappears into the skin

The lotions disappear into the skin so easily and the blue just couldn’t be more fun! I slather this stuff on every day before I head out to the trail on my bike and I feel great knowing that I am fully protected from the sun and from ticks and mosquitoes. I think these lotions are a must-have for every family this summer. You can find these products exclusively from Avon representatives and online at – Lisa

Products that aid in our fight to stamp out breast cancer

As everyone knows October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Pink surrounds us whenever we shop, whether online or in person. There are so many cosmetic companies that donate to a variety of charities that it’s hard to keep up with them all. Some companies, like the Estee Lauder corporation, give year round and generously. They even have their own foundation, Breast Cancer Research Foundation, that sponsors initiatives in women’s fights against this disease. Lisa has written several articles about the wonderful products you can purchase that will donate portions to this fight. Bobbi Brown Pink Ribbon Lip Gloss collection, and products from La Mer, Aveda, and bumble & bumble are among the Estee Lauder products that support the fight.

Some of the items I’ve come across in my internet reading that I’d be interested in are listed here.

JUARA is one of the companies that will be donating 10% of October sales to Cancer and Careers, a program of the CEW Foundation, empowers and educates people with cancer to thrive in their workplace by providing expert advice, interactive tools and educational events.  Cancer and Careers strives to eliminate fear and uncertainty for working people with cancer through a comprehensive website, free publications, career coaching, and a series of support groups and educational seminar. Founded by four socially-conscious women, JUARA Skincare combines Indonesian botanicals and ancient Indonesian health and beauty rituals with the latest skincare technology to restore the skin’s natural balance while evoking the calming experience of an ancient beauty ritual.  JUARA is in fact an Indonesian word that means “winner” or “champion”. “As women entrepreneurs, we created JUARA to help women “champion” their natural beauty, but also because we wanted to take control of our own lives and become champions of our own.”

Rouge Bunny Rouge is donating 50% of the retail price of several products in the UK to Future Dreams. Their new eyeshadow palette, Raw Garden, is my number one wishlist item and I love the idea of 50% going to a worthwhile charity.

In addition two fragrances, Tundra and Allegria, are part of this campaign.

Jergens has committed $250,000 to be donated to Susan G. Komen for the Cure. Find the Original Scent Moisturizer (about $7) with the pink ribbon for your purchase to be part of the donation.

Avon is a company that considers Breast Cancer to be a huge issue for women and supports this cause year round with walks and products. They created the Avon Foundation Breast Cancer Crusade for this purpose. One of the products that they are donating $5 per purchase is Anew Vitale, an evening gel/cream that contains salicyclic acid (good for oily and combo skintypes).

Color Me Monthly is a nail polish subscription that I love since it’s just one (gorgeous) polish at a time. For Breast Cancer Awareness Month they are donating 10% of all sales from The Vault to Breast Cancer Research Foundation. Panther, below, is just one of many great shades. My favorites are Seven Sisters and Chiffon if you want suggestions.

More items that I’ve seen are on Romy Raves including INNI nail wraps, Lisa Hoffman Charm Bracelet and Joico hairspray.

Surprise prize revealed

In September the BIZ (aka Beauty Info Zone) sent some of our favorite brands to our surprise contest winner, Jenny Stamos from Canada. Here’s the prize. Jenny’s email to me are at the end of the post.

Hollywood Fashion Tape is a favorite brand for us. Lisa and I have had fun discovering some of the interesting products they offer. Here are the three that Jenny received:

  • Hollywood Tag Tamers – these magically cover any annoying clothing tags you might have. There are 24 clear adhesive covers in the package in two sizes. You pick the correct size, remove the backing and place it on.
  • Hollywood Hook-Up – this is a clear bra converting clip that converts your bra into a cross-back style. Now your regular bra can be used for racer-back styles and tank tops. Plus it does some “lifting”.
  • Hollywood Squares – a reusable foam sheet that removes marks from clothing whether they are deodorant marks, powders that have marked your clothes or pet hair. It keeps you from having to use water to remove those.

One of my very favorite brands of nail polish is Nubar and we sent on a gorgeous magenta called Desire.  Since Nubar isn’t available in most stores I’m hoping that our Canadian winner has received a brand that she can’t readily find.

Jane Iredale Liquid Eyeliner in Silver – Jane Iredale eyeliners are fabulous and this is such a fun color.

Covermark’s Coverstik in Warm Beige; both Lisa and I use Coverstik and we’re happy to have had this shade for our winner.

Time2Shine lipgloss in Red Carpet Diva by Lips2Kiss. This is one of our favorite brands and we have a future contest planned for some glosses too.

Avon Glimmersticks Diamonds eyeliner pencil in Black Ice. This was covered in my post about some of my favorite eyeliner pencils.

2 samples from brands that we’ve mentioned in our posts: Korres Yoghurt Mask and Rodan & Fields MicroDermabrasion Paste. Korres’ mask is a velvety moisturizing mask that gets raves from everyone. Rodan & Fields MicroDermabrasion Paste helps with a brighter refined complexion. There’s enough in this package for two applications.

Since the BIZ enjoyed putting together this surprise contest using items we’ve either bought or were sent for review/contest purposes we’re on a mission to start a second surprise contest. You’ll never know what’s in that box but if you follow us, you might get some hints along the way. — Marcia

And now a word from our winner:

Hi Marcia,

I just got it! My sister helped me open all the little packages—we were like kids on Christmas morning. I’m especially excited because many of these are products that I’ve only seen in magazines, not in “real life,” either because of their expense or because they’re not available in Canada.

Here’s what I received:

* Nubar nail polish in Desire (the perfect dark red!)

* CM Beauty Coverstik in Warm Beige

* Iredale Mineral Cosmetics Liquid Eyeliner in Silver (so excited to try liquid eyeliner for the first time)

* Time 2 Shine Red Carpet Diva Lip Gloss (a great-color—just a bit darker then my own lips, and adds a nice shine)

* Avon Glimmersticks Eyeliner in Diamonds

* sample of a Korres yoghurt mask

* sample of Rodan + Fields Enhancements Micro-Dermabrasion Paste

* Hollywood Hook-Up Clear Bra Converting Clip (to hide my pesky bra straps!)

* Hollywood Tag Tamers adhesive tag covers

* Hollywood Squares (can’t wait to see if this really does rub the deodorant marks off my clothes—no more wet spots!)

I grew up reading U.S. magazines and could never enter contests, so I’m ecstatic that so many people on the internet have now made it possible for us to win things.  Please don’t ever stop offering giveaways to Canadians because we definitely don’t take it for granted! Thank you so much for the wonderful prize. I’m excited to try out all my goodies!

Eye can see you

I am eyeliner obsessed. Even when I find ones I just love I can’t resist getting others that I’ve heard raves about. Here’s the latest that I couldn’t resist.

Avon GLIMMERSTICKS Diamonds Eye Liner: These were on sale for $2.99 (regularly $6) and I had just read a blog post raving about them. Once I found a good code for free shipping I ordered them in 4 shades: Twilight Sparkle, Sugar Plum, Black Ice, and Smokey Diamond. These are skinny eyeliners that are 5 inches long so they easily fit in a cosmetic case.  Glimmersticks don’t have to be sharpened since they roll up and are retractable which is another cosmetic case plus. The one problem is if you like a very sharp point you won’t get it after a while but they are so thin that I don’t find that to be a problem. Each of these has a  bit of shimmer to them. I think they are beautiful! Twilight Sparkle is more of a cobalt blue than a navy. I like this shade the best since it’s not like other blues I own. I like wearing it when I wear browns on my eye because it makes the color really pop. Black Ice is a deep dark black with silver shimmer, Smokey Diamond is charcoal with silver shimmer, Sugar Plum is a bright plum. These glide on and they wear beautifully. They also come in Brown Sugar and Emerald Glow. This is a rave!

At the same time I bought a regular Glimmerstick  in Cosmic Brown since the site didn’t have Brown Sugar in the Diamonds Eye Liner. It goes on just as smoothly and is great for everyday since it doesn’t have the glitz of the Diamonds Eye. Watch the catalogs for sales on these.

Milani Liquif-Eye is another  I couldn’t resist after reading about them. Milani is carried at CVS and I had some CVS bucks so it was a true bargain for me. I’ll go back for more. They retail for $5.49 and CVS often has specials. Liquif-Eye comes in 5 shades. I bought it in Brown. Even though it’s called a Metallic Eye Liner Pencil I personally don’t see the metallic in the color. But it’s a beautiful rich brown that applies so smoothly. Once it’s set it lasts beautifully on me. A lot of times with pencils I’ll find that they disappear on my bottom lashline during the day but Milani’s lasts wonderfully. It’s called Liquif-Eyes but it’s not a liquid, it just applies as smoothly as a liquid would. It’s also 5 inches long so another great one to carry with you. It comes in 5 shades: Brown, Black, Silver, Gold and Aqua.

Julie Hewett “Too Good to be True” Soot eyeliner is a very dark black eyeliner. It sharpens to a very precise point so it’s easy to get a thin line with it. When it’s freshly on it’s easy to smudge this eyeliner but it sets well and lasts well on my upper lashline. Since my eyes water often I don’t find this perfect for my lower lashline but that’s not a problem since I often use a lighter shade or eyeshadow on the bottom. If you are looking for precision than this is definitely one to consider.  Her eyeliners ($15) are available in Dahlia, Smudge, Fig, Patine, Aurora (white) and Soot. When ordering from Julie Hewett if you aren’t sure about the colors of these items, just call them. They are very happy to help describe shades.

Graftobian Eye Pencils are a bargain and a half. These are longer eyeliner pencils and are only $3.49. Graftobian makes theatrical makeup so you know these are made to last. I wear this in dark brown and it’s a great basic brown eyeliner. They also make some fabulous Luster Pencils for $4.49. These are so much fun to use. The colors are gorgeous: Silver Sparkle, Gold Glimmer, Copper Class, Lovely Lilac, Azure Blue.  Both the regular line of Eye Pencils and the Luster Pencils come in lip shades for the same price.

This is just an example of the many eyeliners I have and am obsessed with. I know you’ll hear from me again about eyeliners, maybe I’ll even share my nightmares about me and eyeliner some day! — Marcia
