With the summer season upon us, here are five common sun-protection mistakes (and how to fix them) from our friends at Aveeno and Acuvue.
1. Ditching Sunscreen on Cloudy Days… If you think a cloudy day means it’s safe to be UV-protection free, think again! You can get just as much UV exposure when it is cloudy, as you can on a bright, clear day. Make sure to cover up and apply a board spectrum sunscreen like AVEENO® PROTECT+ HYDRATE® Lotion Sunscreen with Broad Spectrum SPF 30, even if it’s cloudy.
2. Not Protecting Your Eyes… It is just as important to protect our eyes as it is our skin. The effects of UV exposure to the eyes are mostly cumulative and can cause irreversible harm to the eye if it is left unprotected or under protected. For comprehensive protection, consider the triad of protection: A hat with a brim, UV blocking sunglasses that have a wrap or wider temples on the sides, and for contact lens wearers, UV blocking contact lenses such as ACUVUE® OASYS® Brand Contact Lenses, which has the highest level of UV blocking in a contact lens.
3. Relying Solely on Your Makeup…More is better when it comes to sun protection and while your makeup may contain SPF, it is not enough. For optimal protection, prime your skin with a tinted color correcting cream containing broad-spectrum UVA/UVB protection like NEOVA DNA Damage Control SILC SHEER 2.0 [Broad Spectrum SPF 40], before applying foundation.
4. Ignoring Expiration Dates… Yes, your sunscreen has an expiration date and it does matter! Using sunscreen that is past its expiration date, will result in less effective protection from the sun’s harmful UV rays. To make sure your sunscreen is in tip-top-shape, also check out the label’s suggested storage condition.
5. Getting Into a Hairy Situation… Sun protection is a head-to-toe affair and no part of your body should be left out this summer – including your hair! When it comes to hair, over exposure to UV rays can result in faded color, brittle shafts and split ends. To keep your locks looking luscious, use products that protect from damage caused by sun exposure.
It’s been three weeks since I took the Aveeno Daily Challenge #aveenodailychallenge and I am happy to report that my two goals have been met! Every day for the past three weeks I have slept at least 8 hours per night, and every day I have used my Aveeno Daily Moisturizing Lotion.
By making a conscious decision to get more sleep, I truly realized the benefits of proper rest. It improves the immune system, increases memory and learning, and also speeds up metabolism. It also has a huge effect on mood, judgment, and just motivation in general. Lack of sleep, of course, has a negative effect on all of those areas. Plus, being tired makes you look older – and who needs that?
Also, every day for the past three weeks I have slathered on my Aveeno Daily Moisturizing Lotion each morning and night. Wow, what a difference consistent use makes. Typically, I use body moisturizer when my skin is feeling especially dry. But with unfailing daily use, my skin never got to the point of feeling dry or itchy. I tend to get dry patches on my upper arms, and those completely went away. I love that this lotion is fragrance-free, so it doesn’t compete with any perfume I want to use. Overall, it was a great experience and I am glad I made the choice to moisturize every day.
Even though the three weeks of the #aveenodailychallenge is over, I am going to continue my committment to getting at least 8 hours of sleep per night, and to moisturizing my body every morning and every night. Both choices have made a big difference in my overall health and well being.
But then again, if you ask Grumpy Cat, none of it makes a difference. LOL! - Lisa
For the Aveeno Daily Challenge, I have been doing two things:
1. Getting at least 8 hours of sleep each night
2. Using Aveeno Daily Moisurizing Lotion every day
I have to say, I am noticing a big difference in how I feel throughout the day. I am actually more productive and get more done that I did staying up an extra two hours. It’s easy to get up in the morning (I can’t believe I am not hitting the snooze six times anymore) and I am not struggling to stay awake on the drive in to work.
As for my skin, it is definitely soft and smooth. I tend to have dry patches on my upper arms, and those are going away. Plus, it is officially “Lisa Bronzing Season”, as my wonderful partner Marcia calls it, and I am finding that faux tanning is much, much easier with already hydrated skin.
So far so good…in fact, I am wondering if nine hours of sleep per night might be even better?? - Lisa

As an Aveeno Ambassador, I was honored when asked to participate in their new three-week long Daily Challenge to integrate one additional healthy habit in my life. Who doesn’t want to be healthier and more beautiful?
One way I can better navigate this path is by getting more sleep. Right now I average 5 hours of quality slumber per night. How do I know this? I have been tracking my sleep with my Fitbit Force.
This fantastic device is a watch, plus it tells me how many steps I take each day, how many miles I travel, how many calories I burn, how many times I go up and down stairs, and how many minutes I spend in vigorous exercise. All of it comes in handy, but when I started using the sleep monitoring feature I was shocked when I realized how little sleep I am getting.
I pledge to get at least 8 hours of sleep every night for the next three weeks. In addition, I also plan to use AVEENO® Daily Moisturizing Lotion every day for three weeks. AVEENO® Daily Moisturizing Lotion has natural oatmeal and tons of emollients, so I hope it will make my skin happy.
Here’s hoping more beauty sleep and consistent use of body lotion will lead me to a healthier, more beautiful me! - Lisa

I remember as a tween fighting about cleansing every night. I never wanted to wash my face and I hated taking baths. We lived in an old house and the water always felt cold to me. My, how time has changed all of that. Now I wouldn’t think of going to bed without cleansing my skin. Even on my laziest nights I do something or I’d be tossing and turning worrying about my pores getting clogged and my skin being unable to breathe. It’s one of the most beneficial steps in skincare.
I’m sharing some of the products that I’ve been using for the last few months. I go through a lot of wipes, both daytime and nighttime, so if this seems heavy on that end it’s because they get used for so many things.
Atopalm Moisturizing Cleansing Wipes ($12.99 for 25) – I bought these from Dermstore because of their skincare claims. My logic was that if I was going to use a wipe at night instead of a cleanser that it would help to have one that was also moisturizing. I’ve used several Atopalm products with success so I knew these would be ones I like. According to Atopalm: ATOPALM Moisturizing Cleansing Wipes are luxurious cleansing cloths formulated with exclusive Multi Lamellar Emulsion Formula and vitamin E. The nourishing blend soothes and softens your skin while combating environmental influences. Allantoin calms as portulaca oleracea extract minimizes redness. Grapeseed, jojoba seed and olive oils deliver moisture, leaving your skin luminous and supple. I never use these on my eyes but I do feel like these are the best for my skin of the wipes I’ve tried.
Aveeno Ultra Calming Makeup Remover Wipes ($6.99 for 25)* – I’ve been using these for a few years now. These are actually daytime wipes for me since they are fragranced and I prefer fragrance free before bed. “With ACTIVE NATURALS® CALMING FEVERFEW® , an ingredient related to chamomile, these wipes leave sensitive skin feeling soothed and balanced.”
Aveeno Positively Radiant Makeup Remover Wipes ($6.99 for 25)* – These are a newer wipe from Aveeno. I like that they are oil free. Unfortunately these are fragranced so I don’t use them to remove my night time makeup but I do use them often when I’m swatching products for reviews. The swatches come off cleanly without leaving any residue so I can keep on truckin’. If you aren’t sensitive to fragrance I highly recommend these. “They combine exclusive ACTIVE NATURALS® Total Soy Complex, an ingredient long known to enhance skin’s radiance, with gentle cleansers that won’t dry out or irritate skin.”
Almay Oil-free Makeup Remover Towelettes ($6.99 for 25) – I’ve experimented with different drugstore towelettes and found that the Almay are the ones I like best for night use. I love that they are oil-free and of equal importance fragrance-free. I have used these on my eyes although they aren’t great for removing gel liner or mascara. Mostly I use these on my face though and it feels like I’m getting my face washed without water. Almay says: “hydrates and soothes skin without irritation. Botanical blend of aloe, cucumber and green tea. This face makeup remover leaves no greasy residue, so there’s no need to rinse. Hypoallergenic.”
Herbal Choice Mari Organic Makeup Remover ($22 on sale for $16.95)* - This vegan and organic makeup remover is for the nights I have time to take off my makeup properly. It’s not really a cleanser, it’s more of a pre-cleanser. Directions say to put it on a piece of cotton and gently remove your makeup. It melts away the color quickly. “This natural makeup remover does not contain alcohol, chemicals, detergents or preservatives.” It’s recommended for use on eyes too so it’s really an all in one cleanser. It has a very slight herbal fragrance but it’s very slight. It doesn’t annoy me and I’m quite picky about fragrance. It leaves skin moisturized since it contains organic olive oil but it’s not the least bit oily. Some nights I follow with a cleanser and some just with water. If you can’t tolerate glutens, this is a great choice for you.
Painted Earth True Elegance Cleansing Milk & Make-Up Remover ($23.50)* – This cleansing milk really is elegant. There’s something special about its thick creamy texture that makes you feel like you are moisturizing as well as cleansing. It contains coconut milk which is what must give it that creaminess. You can use this on a pad to wipe off makeup but I prefer it as a regular cleanser. It works especially well with something like a Clarisonic or the Foreo Luna though you don’t really need a tool for it. It entirely removes all makeup, including eye makeup. I prefer to use a dedicated eye makeup remover on my eyes but I’ve used this too without stinging. With Painted Earth products you can always look to see the ingredients which I think is helpful. There’s an herbal fragrance to this so I follow with toner to lessen any lingering scent.
Philosophy Just Release Me Eyemakeup Remover ($18) – I normally use Mary Kay Oil Free Eye Makeup Remover but I was at a JC Penney Sephora and this was on sale for $12 when I was checking out so I decided to pick it up. The first time I used it I spilled a lot because the top is wide open and I didn’t realize that. But I’ve since learned to use it properly. This is a dual-phase eye makeup remover that is gentle and oil-free. It seems to work slightly better than the Mary Kay one on stubborn makeup like mascara and water-resistant eyeliners. Even though it’s more expensive than the MK I will replace it when it’s done so that I have something with this gentle power. Philosophy says: “Philosophy Just Release Me™ Dual-Phase Oil-Free Makeup Remover gently yet effectively breaks down and removes the toughest eye makeup, even waterproof makeup, without irritating the eyes. Formulated with natural aloe, and chamomile and cucumber extracts, this soothing essential works to calm, clean, cool, and refresh the eye area.”
Obviously I don’t use these all every night. I base my choice usually on how much time I’ve left myself, how much makeup I’m wearing and how lazy/industrious I am that night. All are products I have no trouble recommending and will continue using them.
What are your favorite wipes and cleansers? I’m always looking at different options so please share. — Marcia

It’s winter where I live and I’m reminded of it every single day. The predictions for snow while I’m typing this are 6 – 12 inches. The high temperature during the week is supposed to be 0 degrees F. I don’t even live in the worst states like North Dakota and Missouri where the Governors have taken the initiative to close all schools in the state.
There’s not much I can do to change the weather but I can do what’s possible to keep my skin protected and moisturized. I have two products that do just that that were sent for review - Aveeno Positively Nourishing Comforting Whipped Soufflé with Cocoa and Shea Butter and Lubriderm Daily Moisture Lotion with Shea + Enriching Cocoa Butter. What could be better than great chocolate products that don’t make you gain weight?
I’ve been using a lot of Aveeno since I was lucky enough to become an Aveeno ambassador but the Aveeno Positively Nourishing Comforting Whipped Soufflé is a change for me. This is such a rich body cream yet it’s also lightweight with the whipped souffle finish. It’s specifically formulated with Active Naturals Colloidal Oatmeal and enriched with cocoa/shea butter to provide lasting moisture to skin.
The Aveeno Positively Nourishing Comforting Whipped Soufflé takes a little while to absorb because of the texture. It’s a sweet chocolate scent that has an interesting dry down. Suddenly I’ll have a little whiff of something delicious smelling and then I realize it’s my Aveeno.
The Lubriderm Daily Moisture Shea + Enriching Cocoa Butter Lotion is just as delicious smelling, maybe a bit more chocolate scented. They don’t compete with each other. Personally I like a richer, thicker cream on my legs and a lotion like the Lubriderm on my arms. Lubriderm Daily Moisture Shea + Enriching Cocoa Butter Lotion isn’t greasy at all. It’s said to lock in moisture for 24 hours.
If you are crazy for cocoa and crazy for great body lotions and creams then you want these products. The good news is that one US follower is going to win both of these just in time to protect from the ravages of winter. This giveaway is open through 1/18/14 for US only. — Marcia
