Makeup Wars – favorite brushes

Each time Makeup Wars comes together to share posts a topic is decided. While we all don’t post on every one, this week’s is definitely going to be a popular one. MAKEUP BRUSHES!!! We are all beauty enthusiasts so favorite brushes is done with ease. For me though it’s narrowing down my huge collection to just the ones I use all the time. I love luv crave brushes and even though I have over 100 the ones I’m sharing today are the ones I use every week if not daily. A few were sent for review but the majority are ones I’ve purchased and would gladly do again.

ARTIS ELITE MIRROR OVAL 10

Artis Oval 10

Artis Oval 10

When I first reviewed Artis Oval 10 I didn’t realize that it would eventually become my all time favorite face brush. I am madly in lust over this brush. At the time I was using it for powder but I soon learned that it was ideal for foundation. It gives me the smoothest visage ever and makes my skin look airbrushed. With over 250,00 soft bristles it marries the best of two worlds with its softness and refined blending application.

At $77 it’s expensive but the cost is small in proportion to my use and adoration. (Available at Saks and the Artis website)

MAC EYESHADOW BRUSHES

MAC eye brushes 239, 272, 219, 217

MAC eye brushes 239, 272, 219, 217

My first cosmetic job was as a freelancer for MAC Cosmetics. I lived and breathed MAC and that’s when my brush collection really grew. I had (past tense) a pro discount and knew that what I used on clients was what I wanted to use on myself. They are still the eyeshadow brushes that get the most use. It might have something to do with owning duplicates of them – ahem. MAC’s eye brushes all start with the number 2 in their numbering system.

MAC 242 is my favorite since it does just about everything – lays down color, blends shadows, the tip can be used with liner, and is great with both soft colors and more intense ones.

MAC 239

MAC 239

MAC 272 sadly has been discontinued – I don’t know why though since the curve makes it great for the browbone area as well as the lid. It works the same as the 239 but it has the great angle to it.

MAC 217 was always my favorite blending brush but unfortunately the newer ones are bigger and not up to the original. I still love it though and use mine constantly. I’m sure I’ll wear them out at some point.

MAC 217

MAC 217

MAC 219 is my favorite pencil brush. Shockingly I only own 1 of these but I’d happily buy another.

MAC 219

The MAC brushes aren’t enough to keep me satisfied, sort of like Lay’s Potato Chips, I can’t stop at one.

BEAUTY JUNKEES MINI KABUKI SET are brushes that you just can’t beat. Fabulous for eyeshadows and even better for concealer. I pretty much use these interchangeably. At $14.97 this is affordable luxury.

Favorite eye brushes: Shu Uemera 10, Make Up For Ever 218, Anastasia A6, Cinema Secrets 12, Smashbox 4

5 other brushes that get a lot of use include the Shu Uemera 10, made of Kolinsky/Sable. It’s an extreme luxury at $95 but it’s worth it if you have the money.

Make Up For Ever 218 Medium Blender Brush ($25) is great with powder and cream shadows. I use it for blending as well as application.

Anastasia Beverly Hills Pro A6 is my newest brush (reviewed here) and it’s quickly became one of my favorites. Of the three brushes I received from them I notice that I’m reaching for A6 the most. I love it as a firm blending brush.

Anastasia Beverly Hills A6

Anastasia Beverly Hills A6

Smashbox 4 was one of my first highend cosmetic brush purchases. I don’t think you can find this anymore which is a shame. It was called a concealer brush but I love it as a cream eyeshadow brush. Why do brands discontinue their best products?

Eyebrow brushes are my newest obsession and my two favorites are from IT Cosmetics and Full Brow. IT Cosmetics Build a Brow Brush 12 is unique because of the bristles. They are of different lengths so they really reach into your brows to deposit color. It works especially well with a cream brow product. Full Brow is perfect for powders. It just seems to apply the powder more easily and evenly.

MAC CHEEK BRUSHES: There are two MAC Cheek brushes that I use all the time. For blush I like the large angled MAC 168. Some blush brushes are so big that I’d end up with blush all over so a smaller size is my jam. The other is MAC 165, I’ll use it for blush and it’s wonderful for highlighting and contour. Sadly it was an LE brush but the Tapered Face Brush 138 would do the same job though it’s bigger.

Even though I could go on forever I’ll stop with 3 of my favorite face brushes.

IT Cosmetics Heavenly Luxe Wand Ball Powder No. 8, Japonesque Kabuki, Wayne Goss 00

IT Cosmetics Heavenly Luxe Wand Ball Powder No. 8, Japonesque Kabuki, Wayne Goss 00

IT Cosmetics Heavenly Luxe Wand Ball Powder brush is the softest, fluffiest brush. I think mine was part of a TSV (which is why you should always pay attention to the TSV!!). I love IT’s brushes and this one is a great example of what cruelty free brushes are all about.

Heavenly Luxe Wand Ball Powder brush

Heavenly Luxe Wand Ball Powder brush

The Japonesque Kabuki is long discontinued. It’s similar to Nars Yachiyo Kabuki though it was less expensive. It’s not the softest brush but it’s wonderful still for cream blush. It picks up the color well and diffuses it so my cheeks are softly blushing. japonesqueWayne Goss 00 is now only available as a duo – one black, one white. I bought it in a preorder and was able to buy just the one. Go find a friend to split this duo with! This is what I expected of all my Wayne Goss brushes. This is perfection in the way it applies any powders as it just hugs my face and feels like a baby bunny. I’d use it for foundation if I didn’t have the Artis.

While I really haven’t given you many wallet friendly brushes I personally think that brushes are an investment and that they are often worth the extra money. I’m sure if I were first beginning I’d look at ELF, EcoTools, Beauty Junkees, and Real Techniques to shore up my collection. But my shares today are my best and brightest.  What brushes make you stand up and applaud?  —  Marcia

Anastasia Pro Brushes – you don’t know what you are missing

Anastasia Pro Brushes A10, A13, A6

Anastasia Pro Brushes A10, A13, A6

There is nothing better than having amazing eyeshadow brushes in my opinion. I’m a confessed “brushaholic” and I’m not ashamed to admit that. When Anastasia Beverly Hills told me about their Pro Brushes you better believe I was all over them. I graciously thanked them and now I’m thankfully using them.                                           samples

Anastasia Beverly Hills is a brand that’s famous because of creator Anastasia Soare’s incredible skills as a eyebrow specialist. Her first items, the ones that brought her fame, were her brow products which are still best sellers. As time passed she spread out into new areas and now Anastasia Beverly Hills is one of the innovative and popular brands that I use.

Anastasia PRO Brushes on the ABH Mario Palette

Anastasia PRO Brushes on the ABH Mario Palette

There are 12 brushes in the PRO collection, only found online at her website. They’ve created other brushes that you can find on Sephora, Ulta, Macy’s, and more but these PRO brushes are phenomenal and worth ordering them from Anastasia Beverly Hills. Without further ado let’s learn about these three brushes so you can go purchase them!

Anastasia Beverly Hills A10

Anastasia Beverly Hills A10

ANASTASIA BEVERLY HILLS A10 may have the look of MAC’s famous 217 brush but they aren’t the same. ABH is a better brush and that’s saying a lot considering how long I’ve been a fan of the 217.

Anastasia Beverly Hills A10

Anastasia Beverly Hills A10

ABH A10 is called the Diffuser Brush. It’s a fluffy tapered brush made with  premium goat hair. The brush is very soft and has a great amount of give but not so much that you can’t use it for just about everything. It’s recommended to use this for diffusing and shading. I find the A10 to be extremely versatile and use it for both laying down my crease shade and blending it to perfection. At $21 it will make a great extension to your collection. If you don’t have this shape brush you are really missing out!

Anastasia Beverly Hills A13

Anastasia Beverly Hills A13

Anastasia Beverly Hills A13 is their Medium Shader brush ($20). This softly domed brush is a perfect lid brush but you know it’s much more than that. Made of pony hair and blended with synthetic fibers it works very well for smaller eyes too. It’s so beautifully soft and blends pigment perfectly without kicking up powder.

Anastasia Beverly Hills A13

Anastasia Beverly Hills A13

The way I normally apply powder eyeshadow is to put on a lid shade and a brow shade before I apply color in my crease. Even though I can do all three jobs with ABH13, I prefer it for my lid and browbone areas. It blends the colors together without a line of demarcation and caresses my eye while doing so.

Anastasia Beverly Hills A6

Anastasia Beverly Hills A6

I saved my favorite for last. If I could have only one ABH Pro brush it would be Anastasia Beverly Hills A6 ($21). It’s made of premium synthetic fibers and is good for both wet and dry use. You can see a color differential in the fibers.

Anastasia Beverly Hills A6

Anastasia Beverly Hills A6

ABH Pro 6, Buff and Blend, can be used for both eyes and face. It works well with a highlighter shade but what I love it for is my eyes. This is what I feel I’ve been missing in a blending brush. I love the softness and the feel of it in my crease especially.

Anastasia Beverly Hills PRO Brushes

Anastasia Beverly Hills PRO Brushes

I don’t always buy from an artist’s website since it’s so easy to purchase from larger sites online but with free shipping at a $25 purchase I’ll be visiting there more often. I’m dying for the Nicole Guerriero Glow Kit ($40) so I know that Pro Brush A7, the Large Blender brush, is in my future.

Bringing out the colorful side of life with Anastasia Hypercolor Brow & Lash Tint

Most of us think of mascara as brown or black with an occasional color like navy or dark green thrown into the mix. But Anastasia can be all about fun which they prove with their Hypercolor Brow & Lash Tint. As they say “Bright is the new Bold”. They’ve proved that you can be bright and beautiful with three new mascaras.

Anastasia HYPERCOLOR Brow & Lash Tint

Anastasia HYPERCOLOR Brow & Lash Tint

When this package arrived at my door I must admit I looked at my driver’s license to see my age. I am old and wearing these amazingly bright colors could be a shock to my system. But I’m game for just about anything with cosmetics since my philosophy is that it all washes off. So I gave them all a go and figured out that I can wear some of these some of the time. These are not going to be my everyday products but for a fun night at the lake or a party, why not?

There are 3 different shades of Anastasia HYPERCOLOR Brow & Lash Tint: Ultra Violet, Electric Blue and In the Pink.

Anastasia HYPERCOLOR Brow & Lash Tint

Each shade is $22 and comes with a small size LASH GENIUS so you are getting a bonus with these. It’s the perfect way to try out Lash Genius.

Now enjoy these pictures

Let’s start with Electric Blue – a perfect name for this color. On my dark lashes and with my fair skin it’s definitely electric but the funny thing is that I applied this, put on my glasses and it was hours before my husband realized I was wearing Electric Blue on my lashes.

In The Pink: I didn’t get a picture of me wearing this as a mascara but here it is with Electric Blue on my brows. Now THIS my husband noticed!! In the Pink is a bright fuchsia shade though I I find it casts a slightly orange/red tinge.

Ultra-Violet is the normal one in the group and my favorite. It doesn’t show up on me as wearing a purple mascara though in certain lights you can see that it is. It brings out the coolness of some eyeshadows though. It’s much more obvious on my eyebrows and would be more so if I’d filled them in better. I like this a lot as a mascara.

A few things you want to know:

1) This is a thick mascara, it wasn’t wet even from day one.

2) I didn’t get extra volume or length from these but I did get nice definition.

3) I had no smudging or flaking from the mascaras. The only time I noticed a problem was when I rubbed my eyes and some came off but I hadn’t used the Lash Genius.

4) This dries really fast. That’s not a problem when using it as a mascara but if you want to comb your lashes do it quickly. It did make it a little hard to use it on my brows though since I wasn’t adept enough to make them clump free.

5) If an old broad like me can wear these, then anyone can! I may not be Cindy Lauper but I’m willing to have fun with Anastasia’s Hypercolor Brow & Lash Tint – though not every day!anastasia hypercolor swatches

Getting Bold Brows and Beautiful Eyes with the stunning Anastasia Bold and Beautiful Kit

Anastasia Beautiful Eyes and Bold Brows

Anastasia Bold & Beautiful Kit

Anastasia, the line renowned for amazing brow products, has a truly gorgeous set available that makes for both bold brows and for beautiful eyes. This fabulous set, called the Bold & Beautiful Kit, is a real bargain at only $36 so we were thrilled they sent it to the BIZ for review. Look at all you get for that terrific price:

Vol. 1 Bold Brows

Brow Powder, Pomade, Mini Duo Brush, and Mini Tweezers allow you to sculpt, define, and beautifully layer color for perfect brows.

Vol. 2 Beautiful Eyes

Four matte and shimmering shadows in versatile neutrals are the perfect shades to finish any look. Layer them wet and dry to create anything from a subtle, sheer wash of color to an intense, nude smoky eye.

The packaging is fantastic. It’s put together like a vintage mini-book set. It is truly gorgeous and I think I’d buy the set just because it looks so elegantly magnificent. Anastasia really outdid themselves with this one. This is a wonderfully compact set that is fabulous for travel; this set is one to take on vacation with you.

The Beautiful Eyesbook’ has four eyeshadow shades plus a dual sided eyeshadow brush. The colors include a matte cream, a shimmery peach, a matte light tan, and a blackened-brown with shimmer – actually it’s more like glitter, the particles are larger.

The Bold Brows ‘book’ includes  a medium brown brow powder, tinted brow pomade, mini tweezers, and a mini dual ended brow brush/angled brow powder brush.

You can apply the just the pomade with the spoolie end of the brush for a natural look since it gives little color to the brows or apply the brow powder first then the pomade to hold it in place.

And hooray, the tweezer is fantastic! It should be no surprise since Anastasia is known for its brow expertise, but I am so used to slightly sub-par tools in mini sets that this was a happy revelation.

For the eye look above, I used the brow powder with the pomade swept through.  I then used the shimmer peach on the lid and up through the crease, the blackened-brown over on the crease and outer portion of the lid, and the cream for the brow.

Here are a few eye charts with some ideas for you.

Anastasia Beauty Express for Brows and Eyes

Anastasia Beauty Express for Brows and Eyes

Anastasia Beauty Express for Brows and Eyes

My sister is a makeup artist and the only thing she ever criticizes about me (lovingly of course) is that I don’t apply eyebrow makeup often enough. She’s absolutely right and it’s a habit I have to break. I find that try as I may, too many products end up looking unnatural on me. But I’m not giving up and my goal is to perfect eyebrow application. Luckily Anastasia Beverly Hills has sent some products for review.

My first step is with the Anastasia Beauty Express for Brows and Eyes set. This is a great set especially if you need to shape your eyebrows. It contains almost everything you need, it’s only missing a tweezers. Inside the faux leather kit are 5 stencils, brow products and a great angled brush to apply the products.

Anastasia Beauty Express stencils

Anastasia Beauty Express stencils

The stencils cover the different shapes that your current brows could be. There are directions to teach you how to use the stencils to change the shape to perfection. The 5 stencils are: Petite Arch, Medium Arch, Slim High Arch, Full Arch and High Arch. For me the Medium Arch is the best fit.

Anastasia Brow Express cosmetics

Anastasia Brow Express cosmetics

The brow products are double duty products. You use them at first with the stencils to shape the first time or to keep your brows precise several times a month as needed. They are also what you’ll use on a daily basis to fill in your eyebrows. There is a brow wax cream, a double sided brow powder and an eyeshadow duo.

Anastasia brow brush from set

Directions in the top of the palette

What I do after my brows are cleaned up is to put a little of the brow wax on the brush and go over my eyebrows. The set I have is Brunette and the colors are good ones for my hair (it also comes in Blonde). I find that I have to fill in my brows a little darker towards the front because they aren’t full there. I pick up the lighter tone and fill in my arch area. I go over the front with the lighter tone too to make it all blend and look more natural. Sometimes I just blend the two colors together on the brush instead of using them separately. The eyeshadow duo hasn’t gotten a lot of use from me but the colors are great for your browbone and enhancing the inner corner of the eye to lighten and brighten. Since using eyebrow makeup isn’t a built in habit yet I’m happy to have the directions as part of the palette for reminders.

Anastasia Beauty Express for Brows and Eyes is $39.50 and you get a lot for the money. It’s a great beginner set for those of us who need direction and brow shaping. The products in it contain a sample of what makes Anastasia Beverly Hills a leader in eyebrows. It’s also great for travel since it’s all in one.

You’ve seen my before in my Joey Healy review and in my pictures throughout the last three years. Now I’ll share my after. I’m still learning but Anastasia Brow Express is making it easy. What Anastasia items have changed your brows? — Marcia

Marcia’s top 8 list from 2012 plus 1 worst

top8I’ve wanted to do a top 10 list for the longest time but I keep finding more and more items I used for the first time in 2012 so the list has been growing exponentially. I’m forcing myself to cut it down though so that I don’t bore the heck out of you. I know I’m going to regret leaving out some things but if I keep talking about them over and over (like Youngblood Cream blush, BB creams or It Cosmetics products) you’ll most likely click this post off. I might be sorry but the Top 10 is now the Top 8 plus 1 worst for 2012.

Algenist skincare – I haven’t reviewed everything I’ve tried yet from Algenist but with the three I have reviewed and the items I will be reviewing, I can say that this skincare line is my find of the year. As a beauty blogger I try a lot of skincare but few really grab my heart and my wallet. Algenist has done that with their Eye Renewal Balm and Ultra Lightweight UV Defense Fluid SPF 50 plus more that will be coming.

Algenist Eye Renewal Balm

Algenist Eye Renewal Balm

Anastasia – my first review for Anastasia was She Wears It Well eyeshadow palette. At the time I said that it seemed like so many of my other palettes. If that’s the case then why do I reach for it all the time? Then along came Want You to Want Me and that came with me to the Beauty Spotlight Team’s desert island. And don’t get me started on Kisses On My Lips since they are so amazing. Yes, Anastasia has won a place (or 3) on my 2012 favorites list.

Want You To Want Me

Want You To Want Me

Mont Bleu – the most beautiful items ever to own or give as gifts. I’m a huge Swarovski crystal fan so when I was sent a mirror and file from them I went a little nuts. I’d love to own one of everything they make.

Pink Flowers in the box

Pink Flowers in the box

Morning Glamour satin pillowcases – when I started this list I never had a clue that a pillow case would be part of my top items. But I like them that much. I just wish they’d come in King size too since a lot of people I recommend them too only have King size.

Morning Glamour

Morning Glamour

Nail polish – this is where I’m cheating because I’ve found brands in the past year that I’m crazy about. I haven’t reviewed them all yet but that will change in 2013. The ones I have reviewed and recommend are SoFlaJo, Color Me Monthly subscription box polishes, butter London, NCLA, A England, and Polish & Co to name just a few.

A-England Princess Sabra

A-England Princess Sabra

Subscription boxes – how could these not be on my 2012 list? I don’t dare add up what I spent on these. I love trying these in the hopes that I’m going to find a holy grail item. The one box I have had the most fun with is PopSugar Must Have. It’s not even cosmetic either. But there are so many items I’ve never tried before nor run across since I’m not a big shopper (outside of the cosmetic counters that is). This has been fun and of all the boxes the one I know I’m sticking with for 2013. The others may go, new ones may come, but PopSugar will remain. (Hint – I have a new exciting subscription box coming up soon that will be fun too.)

October from the popsugar.com website

October from the popsugar.com website

Sunday Riley – I’ve gone a little nuts with Sunday Riley products though not all have been reviewed. My favorite powder blush that I bought in 2012 though is Honest from Sunday Riley so I really needed to include this in my list.

Sunday Riley Honest blush

Tarte – It’s exceptionally difficult not to list and list oodles of Tarte. There’s so much I love about the brand but for 2012 the best product is Maracuja Creaseless Waterproof Concealer. I’m mad about this concealer and during the last 30% off sale on tarte’s website I even bought a backup while knowing I won’t need it for a long time. But what if I misplace it?? I needed that backup!!

Tarte Maracuja Waterproof Concealer in Fair

Now for my worst – Venus Spa razors. I hate spending the money on razor blades but they are a necessity. When I ran out this month I bought Gillette Venus Spa at Costco which contained a razor and 12 cartridges. I used one of the cartridges on my Venus razor and hated it from the first time I used it. These contain huge gel bars on the ends. Not only did I cut myself every time I used the razor but after 1 leg shave and 3 underarm shaves one end fell off. I usually get a few weeks out of a razor. It bothers me that I spent $30 on this and I will be returning it for the Venus Divine blades that I like.

I have to give one B.I.G. shout out to Makeup Wars. This series is so much fun and I’m so thrilled to be a part of it. I hope you’ve discovered a lot of new blogs and enjoyed reading these as much as I enjoy doing them. makeup wars holiday look logo

Anastasia has Kisses on my List!

Anastasia Kisses On My List

There’s something about Anastasia’s lipgloss kit Kisses On My List Volume 2 that makes me want to sing. Not sure what it is. Could it be the names of the glosses? Jolene, Sharona, Roxanne, Moi, Maggie Mae, Lola? I need to think about that but first I want to tell you all about this amazing set and why you need to put this as numero UNO on your list!

This set of 6 dazzling colors has two different formulas. First there’s Anastasia’s Hydrafull gloss formula in Maggie May, Moi and Sharona. These are sheer, opalescent colors. There’s also a new formula called HYPERCOLOR glosses that will stain your lips. Those shades are Lola, Jolene and Roxanne. This set of 6 cover the gamut too from matte to shimmer. There isn’t a shade that hasn’t won my heart so I’ll try not to play favorites.

The Hydrafull gloss formula is very moisturizing and while it won’t last all day it does leave a very hydrating feeling even after the color has worn off. Moving on to the Hypercolors we have a totally different texture that we’re dealing with. The three Hypercolor glosses are the ones that will actually leave a stain behind. These are thicker than the other glosses and wear longer. They change after a few minutes to the color you’ll end up with. They really do leave a light stain even after the gloss has worn off.

Maggie May is the lightest and warmest, a pinky-peach nude. My lips turn this apricot into a shade that I can wear with everything except the coolest of cool eyeshadows. I love it when I’m wearing greens on my eyes especially.

Maggie May

Maggie May swatch

Maggie May

Moi appears to be the darkest of the 6 shades in the tube but I still wouldn’t say it’s dark once on. Moi has a slight brown undertone to it while still being pink. I’ve seen it described as a nude cream.

Moi

Moi swatch

Moi

Sharona is a gorgeous peach with just a touch of coral. You can see the shimmer in the tube but when it’s on your lips it isn’t the type of shimmer that will migrate. It stays where it belongs.

Sharona

Sharona swatch

Sharona

Lola is a very cool toned light pink. If I were standing in front of an Anastasia display and these 6 glosses were available separately Lola is the first one I’d swatch. I love this tone and the light shimmer in it. It’s a little lighter on my lips than my swatches show. It’s actually a “my lips but better” shade for me.

Lola

Lola swatch

Lola

Jolene steps up the color a bit from Lola. There’s not as much of a cool blue undertone on Jolene. Comparatively it’s a slightly warm pink that’s just a tad darker on my lips.

Jolene

Jolene swatch

Jolene

Roxanne is my favorite (I said I wouldn’t pick favorites but between my unbridled love for Sting and the color I just can’t help myself). This is a deep cool pink with a little bit of coral. It is not an in-your-face pink. Roxanne deepens considerably on my lips after about half an hour.

Roxanne

From what I’ve experienced and what I’ve seen on other people’s lips, the Hydracolors change a little so that they are more customized to you. I don’t think these will wear the same on each person’s lips. Your personal chemistry will play an effect making these more unique.

the Hydracolor wand – it’s hot pink

Maggie May, Moi, and Sharona

Maggie May, Moi, Sharona

This is not a vampy set, this is a set for everyday living. When you first apply any of the Kisses on My List products you might think they are very sticky and extremely glossy but within a minute they settle down. It’s pretty amazing. They become comfortable and natural looking. The applicator is different than any other brand too. It’s a silicone wand that feels odd at first but I soon got used to it and I like the way it applies the gloss. The most amazing thing is that this set is only $30 at Sephora or $2 at Anastasia.net. That makes this set even better than I already thought it was.

Here are two other blogs with some great pictures. 15 Minute Fanatic’s isn’t in depth but the swatches are great. Portrait of Mai has some terrific photos that show you how the colors change on her lips. Remember though that your mileage may vary, mine did. They don’t look the same on my lips as they do on Mai’s. And last but not least, Lolas Secret Beauty Blog, has great swatch pictures on her arm that show the colors at their finest.

While I’m not a very good singer I’m pretty good at applying lipgloss and I can assure you that these are lipglosses I want to apply! Anastasia’s Kisses on My Lips are unique and amazing. — Marcia
