Beautiful brows with Youngblood Brow Artiste

“The eyes are the windows of the soul,” according to an old English proverb.  If that’s the case, then you sure don’t want to ruin the view with big, bushy eyebrows.

I can't even begin to see inside this guy's soul.

I am embarrassed when I think how many years I went without realizing the importance of well-groomed brows.  Once I had them properly done and saw the huge difference it made, I never forgot – from then on, doing my brows was always a priority.  Luckily, it only takes about a minute of my routine.

I first encountered Youngblood Cosmetics at the IMATS in LA last June.  I even wrote a little about the line in our overview of the trip here:  IMATS review.  I was fascinated with the gorgeous palettes and the beautiful face powders.  And I was very curious about the Brow Artiste set ($40), and I chose the Brunette set.  It also comes in Auburn, Blonde, and Dark.

The set is housed in a beautiful, substantial feeling magnetic black case.  It also has a really nice mirror inside.  It has two powders, one lighter and one darker, plus a tinted wax.  In addition, it has a dual-ended brush and a set of tweezers.  The brush has a spoolie at one end to brush eyebrow hair into place, and a slant tip brush at the other end for colored powder application.  The tweezers are really good ones – they are ‘mini’ with a straight edge, and I find them to be excellent for plucking even small hairs.

Brow Artiste up close and personal

You want your eyebrows to be slightly lighter than your hair color – a big mistake is putting a darker shade on the brows.  A slightly lighter shade really opens up the eye area and is far more flattering.

Pictured above is the first shade in the Brunette set, and below is the second shade.  I either use the second shade alone or lightly blend the two colors.  What makes this set extremely versatile is that the eyebrow powders can also be used as eyeshadow.

Pictured below is the tinted wax, which is used to add color and keep brow hair in place.  I find the best way to use this set is to first use the spoolie end of the brush and brush your eyebrow hair straight up.  Trim any long hairs with small scissors (you can find these at the beauty supply store) and pluck any stragglers with the tweezers in the set.  Then I like to use a plastic eyebrow stencil, although you don’t have to.  I wish some came with this set, that would make it absolutely perfect.  But you can find sets of different stencils very cheaply at beauty supply stores.

Next, dip the slanted brush end into the color(s), and then sort of draw onto your brows, going from the bottom of the brow upwards.  This makes the color look very natural.

My 'before' brows

After ‘drawing’ in the color, I then dip the spoolie end into the wax.  I brush my eyebrow hair up one more time using the wax covered spoolie.  The wax fills in any color gaps, and it helps the hair stay in place.

My 'after' picture...but geez, Lisa, put on a little eyeshadow and mascara!!

The wax in this set is great, it doesn’t flake or get sticky at all.  It’s a very soft wax, and it dries soft, so the look is natural and not overdone.

Another 'after' picture with eye makeup. There, I feel better now.

Overall, I love this set.  The colored powders, tinted wax, and tools included are great.  It would be perfect if it came with some eyebrow stencils, but again that’s easily remedied with a quick trip to the beauty supply.  With a little help from Youngblood Cosmetics, my soul can shine through my eyes unencumbered by messy eyebrows!!  – Lisa
