Wrinkles? Check. Droopy eyelids? Check. Hyperpigmentation? Check. As I get older, I have more and more ‘new’ things to check off in terms of my appearance, and usually the checks aren’t for anything very good. With every new development, I find that my original way applying and wearing makeup doesn’t work as well. It’s just a fact, as we age we need to adapt and find new ways to make our new visage look gorgeous.
Linda Mason, makeup artist and owner of Linda Mason Cosmetics, has authored a fantastic book that addresses the concerns of those over forty. The title is “Makeup for Ageless Beauty: More than 40 Colorful, Creative Looks for Women 40 and Over” ($19.99). It’s the best beauty book I have read in ages.
For the past 30 years, Linda Mason has worked with tons of celebrities like Brooke Shields, Paulina Porizkova, and Kim Alexis. Her philosophy is that everyone should be able to look as glamorous and fresh on the outside as they do on the inside. In this book, she focuses on women over 40, and says it’s not necessary to play it safe – there are wonderful ways to really experiment and play with color.
She doesn’t use ‘before’ and ‘after’ pics, as she says they are really only for shock value and don’t contribute much to learning how to properly apply the different looks. Instead, she features a photograph of the look and a diagram detailing the application. The three categories for looks are Subtle, Glamorous, and Creative.
The models are all different ages, all different ethnicities. Instructions for recreating the different looks are easy and practical. There are lots of bright, vibrant looks that don’t make you look like a teenager-wannabe.
And there are truly lovely soft, neutral looks as well. Linda uses her own products for the pictures, and describes color shades but doesn’t give specific names for anything but the foundations.
I’m a long time Joan Jett fan, and I was thrilled to see her as a model in the book looking fantastic!! There are over 40 different looks featured, with lots of people you will recognize like Brooke Shields and Carol Alt.
Linda covers everything from skin care to false eyelashes. She explains brows, face shape, and working with different eye colors. It’s quite comprehensive. Make up pro’s will learn lots of new tricks, and beginners will find the instructions and information easy to understand. It’s a wealth of information that I truly think should be on the vanity of every woman over 40. – Lisa

I have this book and have been so busy I haven’t even opened it! Guess I need to.
I’m going to buy it.
This book looks great! I’m 5 years away from 40 but I do focus on that market as I experience the same “check” as you would say
I love the looks and the face charts side-by-side, she is right it is SO much better without the before and after!

I am definitely going to buy this book especially after reaching the big 5-0 last week!
I love beauty books with face charts, it makes recreating the entire look so much easier. I’ll have to add this to my reading list.
