How many foundations do you have languishing away in a drawer because the color is just a tiny bit off? Or are you like me, with many foundations in varying colors because the hue of your skin changes dramatically with each season?
Well, I may just have the product you need to save you all kinds of money and drawer space: The Body Shop Shade Adjusting Drops ($20).
There are two Shade Adjusting Drops: Lightening, which lightens and neutralizes yellowness, and Darkening, which deepens color.
They both come in a glass jar with a dropper. The drops are thick like a liquid or cream foundation, so unless you have a very thin foundation they don’t change the texture of the foundation. You can adjust the amount of drops to match the effect you need. For my example, I used Le Metier de Beaute Peau Vierge in Shade 03.
The original foundation shade is in the middle, and I put a single drop of the Lightening Drops on the left, a single drop of the Darkening Drops on the right. You can use less than a full drop — I find that a full drop dramatically changes the shade, so even though the glass jar is small the Shade Adjusting Drops will last a very long time.
As you can see, the Lightening Drops did indeed lighten the original middle shade while also giving it a cooler tint, neutralizing the tiny bit of yellowness in Shade 03. One more drop and it would be close to porcelain – it might even be light enough for Marcia! The Darkening Drops were even more dramatic, giving a definite chocolate tint to the original medium shade. I found that while the swatch looks incredibly darker, it was still very wearable and forgiving on my current medium skin.
The Shade Adjusting Drops can come in very handy for a little contouring work, using the lightened portions to highlight upper cheeks and straight down the nose, with the darkened shade for the sides of the nose and under the cheekbones. If you have any sagging under your chin – the dreaded ‘chicken neck’ – a little darkended foundation will make the sag recede and give a great optical illusion.
Overall I really like the Shade Adjusting Drops. They are lots of fun! It’s awesome to experiment, and it’s been great to wear some of my favorite foundations that I typically save for the lazy hazy days of summer. I recommend picking up both, that way you are ready for any potential skin emergency. – Lisa
