Thumbs up for Nuance Salma Hayek Neutral Eye Quad

Whether it costs $10 or $100 you can almost guarantee that I’m going to buy some of the latest and greatest when it comes to eyeshadows. That’s my “thang”. Therefore when Salma Hayek created a line called Nuance Salma Hayek for CVS, you know what I looked at first! Yes, I bought the two eye quads which I’ll review separately. As of now the line has just these two, one called Neutral and another called Smokey. My favorite is the Neutral Eye Quad so that’s what you learn about today.

Let’s start with the packaging. It’s reminiscent of a closed tulip until you open it and peel down the leaves. I both like and dislike the packaging. What I like is that once it’s open it’s easy to use each shade since it opens flat. What I dislike is the tulip packaging since I can’t quite figure out how to store this with my oodles of flat shadows and palettes. It’s just the wrong shape for easy storage, taking up too much room. The tips of each petal are very sharp too so you don’t want this anywhere near a child. In the middle of the flower is the ‘stem’, a small flocked applicator that is totally useless.

Before I used the palette I photographed it and I had an instant dislike for the shape. I was sure that was going to influence my feelings about the eyeshadows. But I’m here to tell you that the quality and colors are excellent. I’m very impressed. I love this even though I didn’t really expect to. The quad contains 3 shimmery shadows and one satin shadow without shimmer.

On the box the shades are labeled but they aren’t labeled within the palette so hopefully I’m not mixing up the names.

Nuance Neutral Eye Quad information

Shimmering Bronze is a beautiful dark bronze with a slight red undertone. The shimmer is gorgeous, I want to actually call them a metallic finish instead of a shimmery finish. There’s no glitter in any of the shadows but they do have that metallic look so that might not be perfect for everyone. This is an intense shade that I like in the crease or it can be used for smudging along the lashline or for eyelining.

Nuance Champagne Gold and Shimmering Bronze

Champagne Gold is an antique gold with a very tiny khaki undertone (or maybe I’m just seeing khaki everywhere these days since it’s a new favorite). It’s a beautiful lid shade.

Frosted Blush makes a beautiful brow/highlighter shade. It has a light gold tone to it.

Nuance Frosted Blush and Toasted Almond

There’s also Toasted Almond. Normally a cosmetic company would name a light beige shade almond but this is more like the shell of an almond. This is a matte that is very satiny. I’ve easily worn it on the lid. It also looks nice smudged lightly under my lower lashline.

My personal favorite combination is wearing Champagne Gold on the lid, Frosted Blush from the lid all the way up and Shimmering Bronze in the crease, then lining with a dark brown eyeliner.

The back of the packing shows a beautiful look using these shadows. Even though this is their Neutral Eye Quad I think it’s also a smokey eye too. This is just as dramatic as their Smokey Eye Quad but using neutral shades instead.

The pigmentation of the shadows is really excellent. They just glide on so smoothly. You do not have to work to get color out of these. I’ve tried a variety of brushes and every shade has worked as wonderfully with an expensive brush as an inexpensive one. The shadows also last which is extremely important to me. They honestly look as good at the end of the day (using an eyeshadow primer) as they do after application. They don’t fade.

The price of these is a little up in the air. My CVS has them marked as $10.99 with a sale sign of $8.99 but the sale hasn’t ended the entire time they’ve had it. Online they are $8.49 though. By the time I finally found the line, since not all CVS stores carry it yet, I was able to take advantage of a BOGO ½ sale so the two quads were $13.50 – less than the price of a single MAC shadow.

Would I recommend you buy Nuance Neutral Eye Quad? Absolutely. If you like shadows in the brown family and like a metallic look to your shadows then this is for you – and me! — Marcia

  4. The packaging is so awkward, but the colours look lovely!

  5. The colors in the Neutral are beautiful and I’m thrilled with it. I’ll review the Smokey Eye Quad next week – but it won’t be as raving a review.

  6. Out of state?? Not worth it. They are on CVS.com after all.

  7. I always wonder if brands like this will expand though. Of course you do have Annabelle and Marcelle which we crave in the US.

  8. Just keep it away from little children. The points are amazingly sharp.

  9. I love this and the packaging so unique ?

  10. I love the colors in the Neutral, not so much the Smokey that I’ll review soon.
