It seems like an oxymoron, doesn’t it? Cleansing oil. My face is already oily and dirty…why would I want to put more oil on it?? Well, because it does one heck of a job of cleansing. I became a cleansing oil believer several years ago and have gone through many bottles from various brands. Any time I have the opportunity to try a new cleansing oil I jump at the chance, because a really good one can become a BFF. I had high hopes that the Dermaquest Universal Cleansing Oil ($39) would prove to be that friend forever.
The Universal Cleansing Oil is designed to be the first step in double cleansing. It removes makeup, dirt, and both soft and hard oil deposits. It works for any skin type, and is non-comedogenic so it shouldn’t cause breakouts. The ingredients are all things that skin loves – a blend of jojoba oil, almond oil and a variety of botanical oils. Used as a pre-cleanser, it takes off that first layer of yuck at the end of the day so you can then follow it with a regular cleanser that treats your skin for whatever issues you may have, like dry skin or acne.
Universal Cleansing Oil is a lightweight oil that isn’t greasy. It features some oils that I have always been a huge fan of for cleansing, like sweet almond oil and meadowfoam seed oil, plus a host of others:
These ingredients not only tackle the dirt and bacteria that are on your skin, they also help to balance out your skin’s natural oils. In addition, these ingredients help reduce inflammation and decongest pores, and the retinyl palmitate treats fine lines and wrinkles, not to mention improving skin tone and elasticity.
Start with a dry face, then put a drop onto your fingertips and rub them together. Massage this onto your face and neck to activate the oil. It melts makeup and dirt right away. Then just use a dampened washcloth to wipe away the oil and makeup. I find that it works great on my eye makeup and doesn’t sting my eyes at all, although the instructions say to avoid the eye area. Sometimes you just have to break the rules!
Afterward I use a regular cleanser for the second cleanse. I might use one that addresses my occasional breakouts or I might use one that is hydrating, depending on the season and my skin’s mood of the day.
Overall, I find that the Universal Cleansing Oil does three main things for my skin:
I am very impressed with the Dermaquest Universal Cleansing Oil and I am very happy that this oxymoron has turned out to be a BFF. You can find Dermaquest products online at their website, as well as on Amazon, Dermstore, and Walmart. – Lisa
