One of my favorite sayings is “No mud, no lotus,” from Thich Nhat Hahn. The beautiful lotus flower grows in mud, and it’s a fabulous reminder that from your suffering, happiness can grow. I think it is especially prescient that the acupressure points in the gorgeous and incredibly effective acupressure mats from Dosha are lotus flowers – transforming the mud of your suffering today into the happiness of your tomorrow!
One of our Beauty Info Zone readers is going to be especially happy, because the fantastic folks at Dosha Mat are sharing a giveaway for a Dosha Acupressure Mat for one of our US/Canada readers.giveaway and sample courtesy of Dosha Mat
Marcia and I look for companies that are invested in giving back and Dosha Mat is a small company that makes helping others a big priority. A full 15% of their profit of every sale is donated to non-profits that promote exercise programs like yoga to people who need it. Every mat they sell helps makes our society healthier, physically and emotionally – and the goal is for this to have not just an immediate benefit, but also one that will last through many generations to come.
Ok, so besides sounding hipster and looking like a super cool yoga mat, what exactly is acupressure and how does an acupressure mat work? Dosha Mat explains it like this: Acupressure is an ancient Ayurvedic treatment which is similar to massage, acupuncture, and reflexology. Acupressure works by massaging and stimulating key points on the body to promote deep relaxation and healing. Acupressure mats benefit the body by relieving tension, soreness and pain in the back, head, neck, shoulders, hips, feet, and other parts of the body.
The Dosha Acupressure Mat ($94.50) is truly beautiful and it’s made with the highest quality 100% eco-friendly ingredients. The lotus flowers that adorn each mat equal more than 4,500 acupressure points. The mats are 27 inches long, 17 inches wide, and 1 inch thick. They weigh about 2 1/2 pounds, so you can take yours anywhere.
Acupressure mats actually help you relax – they put your body into a deeper state of relaxation than it’s normally in, so you sleep better and your body functions better on all levels. This means less stress, and your body is better able to heal itself. Acupressure mats also make your body release endorphins and oxytocin, giving you a natural high so you are always in a great mood when you use your mat!
For a fuller explanation of the science behind acupressure and how it works, Dosha Mat says, “Our acupressure mats have thousands of acupressure points which press and massage special points on your body known as “meridians”. Meridians are energy pathways that connect various points in your body. In the same way that our blood vessels circulate blood throughout the body, our meridians energetically connect different points in our body.
When you use an acupressure mat, hundreds of meridians on your body are simultaneously massaged and stimulated. This sends healing energy to your organs and other parts of your body and creates incredible health benefits. This process also brings your body and mind into harmony and helps you enter deep states of relaxation. Our acupressure mats enable anyone to experience the incredible health benefits of full-body acupressure in the comfort of their home and without having to spend hundreds of dollars on massage therapy.”
So what exactly can this 27×17 mat do for you? So much you won’t believe it. Just laying, sitting, or standing on it for 15 minutes a day can do all of these things:
1. Reduction of pain and soreness
2. Deep calm and relaxation
3. Reduction of stress and anxiety
4. Improved sleep
6. Increased circulation
7. Rejuvenation of the skin
8. Improved digestion
9. Increased energy levels
10. Reduction of cellulite
11. Alleviates arthritis
12. Alleviates fibromyalgia
13. Aids myofascial pain syndrome
14. Alleviates sciatica pain
15. Faster recovery after workouts
16. Lower cortisol levels
Now, the first time I tried to use mine I thought I would just stand on it with my bare feet. That actually isn’t the way I would recommend you begin…ouch! The lotus flowers are gorgeous but they aren’t soft and spongy. They do real acupressure, so you want to experiment to see what feels comfortable for you and your body. There are so many options – you can lay on your mat, sit on it, stand on it, place it under your neck for specific acupressure on sore areas there. My preferred methods are to sit on it while I do my morning meditation, which takes 15 minutes; lay on it – I just put it on my bed and then lay on top of it; sit on it while I’m on the couch, which gets my shoulders, lower back, glutes and thighs; and roll it up into a tube and put it under my neck.
The sensation while using the mat is thoroughly pleasant. The acupressure points don’t dig into my skin and the feeling isn’t painful, and I am probably more sensitive than most people and unquestionably adverse to pain! I notice that I am extremely relaxed and the feeling gets deeper as time goes on. After 15 or 20 minutes, I feel like a warm breeze. Calm, yet energized. Like my blood is pumping. It’s addictive — in the best sense possible!
There are two color options for the Dosha Acupressure Mat – Lavender, which is the one I have, and Turquoise, pictured above. I think the Dosha Acupressure Mat is incredibly impressive and is a fantastic way to take care of yourself in every way. Seriously consider this – not only is it a great way to treat any health conditions you may already have, it’s the best way to help make sure you never get any health conditions to begin with. Yes, the lotus flower blooms from mud. But why not have your lotus flower without any mud to begin with? Take care of yourself NOW. – Lisa
