Book review: ‘The Best Skin of Your Life Starts Here’ by Paula Begoun

The Best Skin of Your Life Starts Here

If you are like me, you’ve turned to Paula Begoun many times for accurate, straightforward information on skin care and cosmetics. Her books have long been bibles in the industry and while she tends to be conservative (so anti-shimmer!) she is extremely knowledgeable and always has information on the latest cutting edge ingredients.

The Best Skin of Your Life Starts Here

Her reviews of particular products are all online now and I thought her days of publishing hard copies were probably over. Luckily I was wrong, and I was recently sent her latest book for review – The Best Skin of Your Life Starts Here ($16.95) co-written with Bryan Barron and Desiree Stordahl.  This book focuses on busting all those skin care myths that just don’t seem to ever go away.

The Best Skin of Your Life Starts Here

The Best Skin of Your Life Starts Here mostly features the rules for beautiful skin, such as the importance of using a leave-on exfoliant and how to layer products. There are tons of excellent tips on figuring out your skin type as well as all the steps to putting together a truly effective skin care routine. Each chapter concludes with a curated list of recommended products for specific skin care concerns. Yes, the lists do include Paula’s own products – but in my opinion, why would she even have a skin care/cosmetics line if she couldn’t also highly recommend her products? Besides, she also recommends lots of excellent alternatives from other lines.

The Best Skin of Your Life Starts Here

The information in The Best Skin of Your Life Starts Here is technical and will make any skincare nerd happy, yet it’s also written in a manner accessible to everyone. Chapter highlights include the difference between dry and dehydrated skin, cosmetics alternatives like botox and surgery, professional makeup tips, and an awesome cosmetic ingredient dictionary.

From understanding where wrinkles really come from to learning the truth about 5 retinol myths, this book has everything a good consumer needs to know. I think The Best Skin of Your Life Starts Here is a beacon of light in an often confusing skin care world. I highly recommend it and have no doubt that it should be on everyone’s shelf.

I’ve been reading Paula’s books since the 1990s. She’s the little boy in the story of the Emperor’s New Clothes. I still have my ancient battered copy of Blue Eyeshadow Should be Illegal, as well as the last edition of Don’t Go to the Cosmetics Counter Without Me. I don’t agree with all of her opinions about makeup, but she is a valuable resource. I visit Beautipedia regularly to check her staff’s reviews before writing my own–so important to get the scientific unbiased point of view.

  9. Mandy | 20th Jan 16

This sounds really interesting! The retinol stuff intrigues me. You hear so much conflicting information about that stuff.

I read a couple of her earlier books, have an older one lurking on a bookcase, if I remember correctly. This looks like an update I’d enjoy. Thanks for the review.

  17. KD | 21st Jan 16

It’s thanks to Paula my adult acne cleared up after years of trying every remedy under the sun. I got rid of all products with fragrance in it, in under a year my skin was the best it’d been since I was a kid.

  18. Emily Draher | 21st Jan 16

I might need to pick this up. I’m at that age that I have to start thinking more about my skincare. A blemish here or there is easy to cover up, but I’m starting to realize that I’m getting older and it’s time to take care of myself! Thanks for the review!

  19. Ann | 21st Jan 16

My BFF would love this book, she more into skincare than me.

  20. Melissa | 21st Jan 16

I am getting more and more into skincare as I head towards my 40s (only 4.5 years left!). I should grab this book!

  21. Lisa Heath | 21st Jan 16

Sounds like something I need to read! Every time I think I’ve got my skin under control – everything goes to hell

  22. Miranda Mendoza | 21st Jan 16

Thanks for the thorough review! Definitely one I need to add to my amazon wishlist.

  23. Kristina | The Feminine Files | 21st Jan 16

Skin can be very confusing, and it doesn’t help that so many amateurs post wild and crazy articles out on the web! This book sounds extremely helpful.

  24. Kristin Bassett | 22nd Jan 16

This sounds like a great book!

  25. Christy Peeples DuBois | 25th Jan 16

I have been meaning to order several samples from Paula’s choice and I have yet to do so but am going to do that this week. I like that she offers sample sizes to try before having to buy a full sized product. I would love to have this book. It sounds like it contains much useful information.

  26. Alexis | 2nd Feb 16

I love seeing a book review! I’m not very knowledgable about skincare, so this is really interesting.
