It’s officially cold and flu season and it’s always a good idea to be prepared. The product I’m reviewing today, Hydralyte, is exactly what is needed after any illness (I get migraines and this has been a real lifesaver) and it’s also a huge favorite of athletes and those of us who just plain work out hard. Besides, nothing ruins great skin faster than dehydration Hydralyte gets you re-hydrated fast, and it tastes pretty darn good. There are three different types, liquid, tablets, and powder, and it’s easy to find at your neighborhood drugstore or online. Hydralyte is something you will want to have on hand because you never know when you will need it…and you will be so glad you have it when that time comes.sample affiliate links
Dehydration happens. Maybe you’ve had the flu and gone through a bout of vomiting or diarrhea, or had a bad migraine where you just couldn’t keep anything down, not even water. Or, perhaps you’ve been extremely active and been sweating a lot more than normal. Traveling absolutely puts you at danger for dehydration. Symptoms include thirst, fatigue, dizziness, headaches, dark yellow urine, dry mouth, irritability, and loss of skin elasticity. You know you are dehydrated when you wake up and have pillow crease marks on your face or sheet marks on your skin. Being dehydrated effects you physically and mentally and is not something to take lightly – it can really mess you up. Of course, drinking water re-hydrates you, but Hydralyte will get you re-hydrated even quicker with the right balance of glucose and electrolytes. Water and sports drinks don’t restore electrolytes and sports drinks also have tons of sugar.
Hydralyte has ready to drink Oral Electrolyte Solutions ($6.99 for 1 liter size or $8.99 for a 4 pack of 8.5 fl. oz. size) that are based on World Health Organization standards for re-hydration. They come in three flavors: Orange, Berry, and color-free Lemonade. They all taste really good, although I would say my favorite is the Orange. The Lemonade is great to use if you are having a colonoscopy because it’s color-free. You don’t have to refrigerate them, but I like them better cold. They actually keep for 30 days after opening if you keep them in the fridge. Any age person can drink them, even little kids, so pack them up and take them to those Little League games! So much better than Gatorade, since they have up to 75% less sugar and four times the electrolytes than sports drinks.
If you are traveling, or hiking/biking and carrying the pre-mixed bottles isn’t practical, the Hydralyte Effervescent Electrolyte Tablets ($9.99) are the way to go. These come in two flavors, Orange and Berry – again, my favorite is orange but they both taste good. The tube has 20 tablets, and you need 2 tablets for 7 ounces of water, which means 10 doses per tube. Then it works just the same as the pre-mixed type. The big advantage is the convenience – so easy to put in your purse, backpack, bike bag, diaper bag, etc. The solution doesn’t last as long as the pre-mix, only 24 hours refrigerated.
Hydralyte also comes in powder form but I haven’t tested that. It’s really easy to find Hydralyte – it’s sold online at Amazon, and it’s at Rite Aid, Walmart, and Publix, among others. Be prepared and pick some up – I know you won’t be sorry! – Lisa
