Let’s face it – we all want to look younger, and the promise of plastic surgery is alluring.  It’s so seductive, that promise of absolutely no wrinkles, no lines, no bags under the eyes…the promise of a return to the way we ‘used to’ look when we were young and full of life and energy.  Looking better helps you feel better about yourself.  It’s true.  But needles…surgery…it sounds pretty scary to me, so I haven’t done any sort of plastic surgery or even Botox.  However, when I heard that Suzie Meklir and Robin Pluto were opening a new hair and skin center with MicroCurrent Non-Surgical Face lifts available, and they offered to let me check it out, I decided to take the plunge.  In the name of research, of course.  Yes, I am always happy to be your Guinea Pig!!

Suzie and Robin own the Renew Hair and Skin Center in Bingham Farms, Michigan.  They offer a myriad of really cool services like hair loss therapy, Detox Footbaths, Organic Microdermabrasion, Phytodynamic Facial Rejuventation Therapy, and MicroCurrent Non-Surgical Lipo (oh yes,  I am eventually signing up for that one!!)  I decided to try the NonSurgical Face Lift first, and once again put my face out there with no makeup on whatsoever.  I guess I am a glutton for punishment.

Ok, so how in the world can one get a face lift without surgery?  Lisa Salaita,  their amazing aesthetician, explained the process to me.

“MicroCurrent is a non-surgical alternative that effectively diminishes signs of aging. MicroCurrent uses low-frequency electrical currents to “re-educate” the muscle. This helps restore elasticity ending with a more defined and toned appearance of the skin. In addition, regular treatments will improve blood flow and increase the supply of vital nutrients, which not only helps the firming and toning, but also the quality of skin.  Benefits include diminished appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, diminished expression lines, increased ATP (cell energy), plumped up muscle, increased blood circulation, reduced jowls and double chin, lifted droopy eyelids/eyebrows, and increased lymphatic drainage, among other things.”

For MicroCurrent to be most effective, Renew recommends  services twice a week for six weeks (with 72 hours in between treatments). After that, maintenance is one time per month.

I started my treatment on Monday, and here is my before picture:

Look at those dark circles under my eyes.  I can’t wait to be rid of them!!  I went in to my appointment with some trepidation…I mean, I know it’s not surgery, but still electricity scares me.  What if it hurt?  What if I chickened out?  What if my face froze into some awful contortion like my mom said it would when I made those horrible faces as a kid???
I walked in and was greeted warmly by Suzie, who is absolutely gorgeous – and she has had the procedure herself, and I was just astounded by her results.  I was given fresh, cold water, then taken to the spa room.   I didn’t need to do anything but lay down, Lisa covered me with a warm blanket and Suzie put these moisturizing gloves on my hands to give me a complimentary fabulous hand treatment as Lisa did the MicroCurrent.  First, Lisa cleansed my skin, then she worked me over with an ultrasonic scrubber.  This alone was worth the price of admission.  The treatment deeps cleans your skin, extracts whatever is clogging up your pores, and is also great for reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.
After that, the MicroCurrent began.  Lisa used a wand device over a type of gel that is similar to what is used for ultrasonic procedures, and she alternated between lower and higher currencies, depending on how it felt to me.  It never really hurt – the strangest part was when she put the device by my teeth, it gave me a metallic taste in my mouth.  She worked on both my face and my neck.  At some points I could feel my face contorting, but luckily it didn’t freeze that way (guess mom was wrong after all!!).   Afterward I felt relaxed and refreshed.  I went home and my husband even commented on how great I looked – there really was a difference right away.  Here is my after picture for the first treatment:
And here I am after treatment number two:
Remember, this is with no makeup on – although in my after treatment pics I do still have some mascara on my lashes.  What strikes me from these pics is the improvement in my skin color and also the dark circles under my eyes.

I will continue to post weekly pics each Sunday as I go through the six-week process.  In terms of cost, I am sure it varies by salon – I know that Renew has packages to fit any budget, and if necessary they also have in-house financing available.   If it makes a huge difference I think it will be worth it to not have to go under the knife.  And I am very happy to be your Guinea pig and try it out for you first!!  -Lisa
