Myrabelle Mascara Shield: does it make life easier?

I am often a real sucker for the latest gadgets…they always look like they will make my life so much easier and better.  I can’t tell you how many late night purchases I have made, thinking the Sham Wow really will change my life…and then it doesn’t.  So I was skeptical when I got the Myrabelle Mascara Shield ($10).  What does ten bucks get you?  A useless piece of plastic?  Or an ingenuous little invention that saves you time and helps you look gorgeous??

The Myrabelle Mascara Shield is plastic, it has a long handle with a curved top that fits the shape of the eye area.

Here’s a close up of the top:

You can use it for many things:  preventing eyeshadow fallout, tinting lashes, applying eyeliner, and applying mascara.  To prevent eyeshadow fallout, close your eye and place the Myrabelle directly over the top lashes.  Apply your eyeshadow – fallout catches on the shield instead of your face.

You can see the small specks of eyeshadow on the Mascara Shield that normally would have just fallen on my face.  I do really like this product for eyeshadow application, especially when working with pigments and more shimmery eyeshadows.

I also use it this way for eye lining.  When I am using a liquid liner that has a sort of flimsy brush, it’s great to use the Myrabelle because if you have it lined up right, the extra liner ends up on the shield instead of in your lashes.

To tint lashes or apply mascara, you turn the tool upside down and press it on the top lid right next to the lashes.  It looks weird, but that bright pink color sure does make your lashes pop so you can see them all.

Honestly, I don’t like the Myrabelle for mascara application.  While it makes every lash visible, I find I get more mascara on the mascara shield than I do on my lashes.  I get better results putting mascara on without it.

Here is how to use it for the bottom lashes:

Again, the mascara application part just doesn’t work for me.  I don’t tint my lashes so I can’t say for sure, but I would bet it’s fantastic for lash tinting.

Is it worth the ten bucks?  Was it another useless midnight purchase, or was it a life changer for me?  I think the answer is it was worth ten bucks – I reach for it a lot when applying eyeshadow and eyeliner, and it cleans up quick and easy with a little spritz of brush cleaner and a tissue.  Is it a truly perfect miracle worker?  No, not really.  But it’s a handy little tool to have around, and I use it way more than I do my Sham Wow.  – Lisa

I know what you mean about those damned infomericals! They look SO convincing and I FEEL like I NEED this or that!

I picked up something like this, off eBay for a few bucks. I don’t think I would spend 10 bucks on this, but the little ebay purchase I got was pretty good. It was also a lot different– it was this one (I don’t mean to link spam, this is not my listing or anything like that) http://cgi.ebay.com/2pcs-Japan-Solid-Three-in-one-Mascara-Shield-1029-/160486636253?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item255dbfbadd and it was a bit complicated to use LOL. I think I like your design better! I agree, neat little tool to have around.

I was intrigued when I’d heard about these for keeping mascara from ending up on my lid. You’re right though. You’d end up with more mascara on the tool than the lashes. But it does look excellent for catching fallout. Hmmmm

I’m glad you showed pictures of you using this. Koren of Enkore Makeup from YouTube is selling one of these as well. I’m not sure how his differs from this one. It seemed as though it would’ve been very helpful. Sucks that you end up wasting product. I agree with Perilously Pale, maybe it will at least prevent fall-out.

I think I actually like this better as a fallout shield. :]

It’s so annoying to clear shadow off the lashes before mascara.

Okay I have seen these things ever since I was a little girl growing up in Japan. You know Asian eyes are different and gadgets are popular there, so when I saw my aunt’s friend use one of these, I just wondered why can’t you use a kleenex? But gadgets are always fun to buy especially when the person selling it is so good at showing how it works! Like when ever am I going to use my kitchen knife to cut a brick? :p
